Antioxidant phenolics from Broussonetia papyrifera fruits
Fractionation of the EtOH extract from the fruits of Broussonetia papyrifera led to
the isolation of 15 phenolic compounds (1–15). Their structures were identified using
spectroscopic methods. Among these compounds, 1 and 2 are new and 3–15 were
isolated from this plant for the first time. Antioxidant activities of compounds 2–15
against H2O2-induced injury in SY5Y cells and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical
scavenging activities were evaluated
Experimental Free-Space Distribution of Entangled Photon Pairs over a Noisy Ground Atmosphere of 13km
We report free-space distribution of entangled photon pairs over a noisy
ground atmosphere of 13km. It is shown that the desired entanglement can still
survive after the two entangled photons have passed through the noisy ground
atmosphere. This is confirmed by observing a space-like separated violation of
Bell inequality of . On this basis, we exploit the distributed
entangled photon source to demonstrate the BB84 quantum cryptography scheme.
The distribution distance of entangled photon pairs achieved in the experiment
is for the first time well beyond the effective thickness of the aerosphere,
hence presenting a significant step towards satellite-based global quantum

Bioactive compounds from Rumex plants
Two new naphthalene acylglucosides, rumexneposides A (1) and B (2), together with 12 known
compounds (3-14), were isolated from the roots of Rumex nepalensis. Their structures were established
by chemical and spectroscopic methods. The biological activities of compounds 1-14 as well as an
additional 11 compounds previously isolated from R. nepalensis and Rumex hastatus (15–25) were
evaluated against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, para-aminobenzoic acid (pAba) pathway, and a panel of
human cancer cell lines. The results showed that compound 15 was the most active against M.
tuberculosis with an MIC value of 2.85 mM similar to that of isoniazid. Compound 5 could inhibit pAba
synthetic pathway with an MIC value of 12.6 mM, comparable to that of positive control abyssomicin C,
representing a new example of the rare pAba pathway inhibitors

Anti-tumor activity of N-trimethyl chitosan-encapsulated camptothecin in a mouse melanoma model
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Camptothecin (CPT) has recently attracted increasing attention as a promising anticancer agent for a variety of tumors. But the clinical application is largely hampered by its extreme water insolubility and unpredictable side effect. It is essential to establish an efficient and safe protocol for the administration of CPT versus melanoma.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Camptothecin was encapsulated with N-trimethyl chitosan (CPT-TMC) through microprecipitation and sonication. Its inhibition effect on B16-F10 cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis was evaluated by MTT assay and flow cytometric analysis in vitro. The anti-tumor activity of CPT-TMC was evaluated in C57BL/6 mice bearing B16-F10 melanoma. Tumor volume, tumor weight and survival time were recorded. Assessment of apoptotic cells within tumor tissue was performed by TUNEL assay. Antiangiogenesis and antiproliferation effects of CPT-TMC in vivo were conducted via CD31 and PCNA immunohistochemistry, respectively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>CPT-TMC efficiently inhibited B16-F10 cells proliferation and increased apoptosis in vitro. Experiment group showed significant inhibition compared with free CPT-treated group (81.3% vs. 56.9%) in the growth of B16-F10 melanoma xenografts and prolonged the survival time of the treated mice (P < 0.05). Decreased cell proliferation, increased tumor apoptosis as well as a reduction in angiogenesis were observed.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data suggest that N-trimethyl chitosan-encapsulated camptothecin is superior to free CPT by overcoming its insolubility and finally raises the potential of its application in melanoma therapy.</p
Influence of eight rootstocks on fruit quality of Morus multicaulis cv. ‘Zijing’ and the comprehensive evaluation of fruit quality traits
Mulberry (Morus L.) has become an important crop throughout the world due to its fruits have been industrially exploited for various commercially valuable products. Many studies on mulberry related to genetic diversity, fruit quality, and breeding programs have been carried out, but little information on mulberry rootstocks is available, especially the possibility of applying grafting to improve the fruit quality. Here, we evaluated the effects of 8 different rootstocks on the fruit quality of ‘Zijing’ mulberry. Twelve fruit quality traits were extremely different except for the fruit shape index (FSI). ‘Zijing’ on ‘Zheza 2’ had the highest fruit weight (FW) and size, as well as titratable acidity (TA), but lower levels of other compounds content except the total soluble solids content (TSS) were detected. ‘Yuesang 51’ exhibited the highest soluble sugar content (SSC), reducing sugar content (RSC), SSC/TA ratio, anthocyanin content (AC) and the lower TA. In contrast, the lowest TSS, SSC and RSC were shown in ‘Guisang 5’. Moreover, ‘Guisang 12’ exhibited the highest TSS and soluble protein content (SPC). The highest vitamin C content (VC) was observed in ‘Guisang 6’. ‘Tang 10 × Lun109’, Zhenzhubai seedlings, ‘Yuesang 11’ together with ‘Yuesang 51’ had the lowest and similar levels of TA. Most importantly, these fruit quality traits were evaluated by principal component analysis (PCA), and ‘Yuesang 51’ with good comprehensive fruit quality was screened out, followed by ‘Guisangyou 12’. Overall, these results contribute to evaluating the roles of different rootstocks on improving fruit quality of mulberry
