Investigating the individual trust and school performance in semi-virtual collaboration groups
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between individual trust of students in computer supported semi-virtual collaboration groups and student’s performance in school. Design/methodology/approach: Longitudinal questionnaires and interviews are conducted during the case study. By analyzing the data from the questionnaires and the grade earned by the students, the sample students are ranked with respect to the trust level and individual performance. Furthermore, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test is used to compare individual trust level and performance in the computer supported semi-virtual collaborative environment. Findings: The distribution of an individual’s trust level is roughly consistent with the distribution of the individual’s performance in the collaboration. Besides, the relationship between a student’s trust level and the student’s performance is positively correlated. Research limitations/implications: This study integrates the issues of trust, school performance, and collaboration in an educational context. Furthermore, the conclusions drawn from this paper extend the literature of multiple disciplines including education, management, and psychology. Practical implications: The conclusions could apply in the fields of education and management since the analysis revealed the relationship between an individual’s trust level and their performance. Originality/value: This study contributes to the field of trust and collaboration research with a link to trust development and performance. The study also provides an insight into how to successfully improve the performance of student semi-virtual collaboration groups
Flow cytometric analysis of CK19 expression in the peripheral blood of breast carcinoma patients: relevance for circulating tumor cell detection
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Immunocytochemistry and RT-PCR have been widely used for the detection of circulating tumor cells in patients with breast cancer but their specificity is limited. Our purpose is to utilize a convenient and specific technology to detect circulating tumor cells in breast cancer patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To determine the sensitivity and specificity of our method, A431 cells were serially diluted with human peripheral blood leukocytes and stained with CK19. A total of 73 blood specimens including 25 healthy volunteers and 48 patients with breast carcinoma and benign tumor were tested by flow cytometry to quantify the expression of CK19.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The detectable upper limit of A431 cells was 1 cancer cell among 10<sup>4 </sup>human white blood cells. CK19 was detected in 27% of breast cancer patients but none control gives positive result. The number of cancer cells increased gradually along with the disease stages for it was the least in stage I (0%) and the most in stage IV (1.29%). Fifteen patients were observed during three month chemotherapy after surgery, and most of their CK19 expression levels declined after treatment.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our research convinces that the detection of CK19 in peripheral blood by flow cytometry is also a specific and feasible method to monitor circulating tumor cells in breast cancer.</p
Hainan sport tourism development—A SWOT analysis
Hainan, as a popular tourism destination, is well-promoted by the Chinese central government. In particular, both central and local governments encourage Hainan’s sport tourism-related professionals to develop sport tourism as one of the most important tourist activities in Hainan. However, previous research has not reported on Hainan’s sport tourism strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats as a tourism destination or a sports event host. This study uses SWOT analysis to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the context of Hainan’s sport tourism development. A total of 12 dimensions, including branding, culture, finance, infrastructure, location, market, nature, policy, product, specialty, sustainability, and tourist were generated from our data analysis. In addition, a total of five future directions, including emphasizing event-oriented sport tourism, prioritizing sport motivation, identifying major sport tourism markets, making the rational use of sport tourism resources, and nurturing sport culture, are recommended as a result of this study
Hybrid Dynamic Pricing Model for Transport PPP Projects during the Residual Concession Period
Public–Private-Partnerships (PPPs) have been adopted worldwide to deliver infrastructure projects and/or provide public services. Having a reasonable concession price (operation and transfer) in place is pivotal for sustaining a win-win relationship between governments and private sectors. However, historical data have shown that the concession price of PPPs when transfer is less than satisfactory due to the changing attribute of pricing parameters, causing substantial loss of residual value (RV). Nevertheless, a rational and systematic pricing model for PPPs, especially transport PPPs, is not yet available. To this end, a hybrid dynamic pricing model for transport PPPs during the residual concession period underpinned by the case-based reasoning technique is proposed. Furthermore, using a case study of the Western Harbor Crossing tunnel in Hong Kong, the proposed model is validated to be able to account for the dynamic pricing parameters and calculate a reasonable and accurate residual concession price. The contributions of this study are twofold: (1) it highlights that a reasonable concession price beyond the operation period is significant in maintaining RV; and (2) it provides a hybrid dynamic pricing model for governments and private sectors to calibrate the current less-than-satisfactory residual concession price
Stator Flux Observer for Induction Motor Based on Tracking Differentiator
Voltage model is commonly used in direct torque control (DTC) for flux observing of asynchronous motor. In order to improve low-speed and dynamic performance of the voltage model, a modified low-pass filter (LPF) algorithm is proposed. Firstly, the tracking differentiator is brought in to modulate the measured stator current, which suppresses the measurement noise, and then amplitude and phase compensation is made towards the stator electromotive force (EMF), after which the stator flux is obtained through a low-pass filter. This method can eliminate the dynamic error of flux filtered by LPF and improve low-speed performance. Experimental results demonstrate effectiveness and improved dynamic performance of such method
Photocatalytic activity and mechanism of YMnO3/NiO photocatalyst for the degradation of oil and gas field wastewater
One-step hydrothermal method has been used to synthesize YMnO3@NiO (YMO@NO) photocatalysts with high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of oil and gas field wastewater under simulated solar irradiation. Through various characterization methods, it has been confirmed that the YMO@NO photocatalyst comprises only YMO and NO, without any other impurities. The microstructure characterization confirmed that the YMO@NO photocatalyst was composed of large squares and fine particles, and heterojunction was formed at the interface of YMO and NO. The optical properties confirm that the YMO@NO photocatalyst has high UV-vis optical absorption coefficient, suggesting that it has high UV-vis photocatalytic activity. Taking oil and gas field wastewater as degradation object, YMO@NO photocatalyst showed the highest photocatalytic activity (98%) when the catalyst content was 1.5Â g/L, the mass percentage of NO was 3%, and the irradiation time was 60Â min. Capture and stability experiments confirm that the YMO@NO photocatalyst is recyclable and electrons, holes, hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals play major roles in the photocatalysis process. Based on experiments and theoretical calculations, a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism of the YMO@NO photocatalyst is proposed
The correlation between intracranial arterial calcification and the outcome of reperfusion therapy
Objective: Intracranial arterial calcification (IAC) is a risk factor of ischemic stroke. However, the relationship between IAC patterns and clinical outcome of ischemic stroke remains controversial. We aimed to investigate the correlation between IAC patterns and the effects of reperfusion therapy among acute stroke patients. Methods: Consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients who underwent reperfusion therapy were included. IAC was categorized as intimal or medial. Based on its involvement, IAC was further classified as diffuse or focal. Neurologic dysfunction was assessed by the National Institute of Health stroke scale (NIHSS). Clinical outcome including favorable neurologic outcome (FNO) and early neurologic deterioration (END) were assessed. Results: Of 130 patients, 117 had IAC. Intimal IAC was identified in 74.6% of patients and medial IAC was present in 64.6% of patients. Diffuse IAC was present in 31.5% of patients. All diffuse IACs were medial pattern. Diffuse IAC was associated with higher baseline NIHSS (p = 0.011) and less FNO (p = 0.047). Compared with patients with focal or single diffuse IAC, patients with multiple diffuse IAC had higher baseline NIHSS (p = 0.002) and less FNO (p = 0.024). Multivariable linear regression (p < 0.001) and logistic regression (p = 0.027) suggested that multiple diffuse IAC was associated with higher baseline NIHSS and less FNO. No significant association was found between END and different IAC patterns. Interpretation: Multiple diffuse medial IAC may predict severer neurologic dysfunction and less favorable neurologic outcome after reperfusion therapy in acute stroke patients.</p
Reactive Oxygen Species and Gibberellin Acid Mutual Induction to Regulate Tobacco Seed Germination
Seed germination is a complex process controlled by various mechanisms. To examine the potential contribution of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and gibberellin acid (GA) in regulating seed germination, diphenylene iodonium chloride (DPI) and uniconazole (Uni), as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and GA synthesis inhibitor, respectively, were exogenously applied on tobacco seeds using the seed priming method. Seed priming with DPI or Uni decreased germination percentage as compared with priming with H2O, especially the DPI + Uni combination. H2O2 and GA completely reversed the inhibition caused by DPI or Uni. The germination percentages with H2O2 + Uni and GA + DPI combinations kept the same level as with H2O. Meanwhile, GA or H2O2 increased GA content and deceased ABA content through corresponding gene expressions involving homeostasis and signal transduction. In addition, the activation of storage reserve mobilization and the enhancement of soluble sugar content and isocitrate lyase (ICL) activity were also induced by GA or H2O2. These results strongly suggested that H2O2 and GA were essential for tobacco seed germination and by downregulating the ABA/GA ratio and inducing reserve composition mobilization mutually promoted seed germination. Meanwhile, ICL activity was jointly enhanced by a lower ABA/GA ratio and a higher ROS concentration
Deep muscularis propria tumor invasion without lymph node metastasis as a unique subclassification of stage IB gastric cancer: a retrospective study
BACKGROUND: The prognosis difference based on the depth of tumor muscularis propria invasion in gastric cancer (GC) was still debated, and therapy strategy for stage IB GC patient required further investigation. METHODS: A total of 380 patients with pT2 GC after radical surgery were retrospectively analyzed, including 185 in superficial muscularis propria (sMP) group and 195 in deep muscularis propria (dMP) group. RESULTS: The overall survival (OS) was significantly better for patients in sMP group than for patients in dMP group (P = 0.007). In multivariate analysis, depth of tumor invasion, pN stage, age, primary location, positive expression of p53, elevated maximal LDH, elevated initial CA19-9 and AFP level were independent prognostic factors for OS. The sMP group had a significantly better OS than dMP group (P = 0.014) in pN0 stage. After further stratification, the survival outcomes were not significantly different between deep muscularis propria tumor invasion without lymph node metastasis (dMPN0) group (stage IB) and superficial muscularis propria tumor invasion with stage 1-2 lymph node metastasis (sMPN1-2) group (stage II) (P = 0.100). Patients with adjuvant chemotherapy had a statistically better survival than those without in dMPN0 group (P = 0.045) and dMPN0 patients with adjuvant chemotherapy had better OS than sMPN1-2 patients (P = 0.015). In addition, greater postoperative survival could be observed in sMPN0 patients than dMPN0 patients in p53-positive group (P = 0.002), and similar OS could be seen between dMPN0 patients with p53-positive and T2N1-2 patients (P = 0.872). CONCLUSION: As a unique subclassification of stage IB GC, appropriate adjuvant chemotherapy should be considered for patients with dMPN0 stage. In addition, positive expression of p53, elevated LDH could be potential factors in identifying the different prognoses for stage IB GC patients
