    AN OBSTACLE DETECTION SYSTEM USING DEPTH INFORMATION AND REGION GROWING FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED PEOPLE

    [[abstract]]This study proposes an obstacle detection method based on depth information to aid the visually impaired people in avoiding obstacles as they move in an unfamiliar environment. Firstly, we have applied dilation of morphology and erosion of morphology to remove the crushing noise of the depth image and have used the Least Squares Method (LSM) in a quadratic polynomial to approximate floor curves and determine the floor height threshold in the V-disparity. Secondly, we have searched for dramatic changes depth value in accordance with the floor height threshold to find out suspicious stair edge points. Thirdly, we have used the Hough Transform to find out the location of the drop line. In order to strengthen the characteristics of the different objects to overcome the drawbacks of the region growing method, we have applied edge detection to remove the edge. Fourthly, we have used the floor height threshold and features of the ground to remove ground plane. And then our system has used the region growing method to label the tags on different objects. It has analyzed each object to determine whether the object is a stair. Fifthly, if the result is neither up stair nor down stair, we have used K-SVD algorithm to determine whether the object is people. Finally, the system has assisted the users to determine the stairs direction and obstacle distance through a voice prompt by Text To Speech (TTS).     Role of inflammation-induced oxidative stress in the pathogenesis and progression of chronic inflammatory airways diseases has received increasing attention in recent years. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 is the primary transcription factor that regulates the expression of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes. Graptopetalum paraguayense E. Walther, a vegetable consumed in Taiwan, has been used in folk medicine for protection against liver injury through elevating antioxidation. Recently, we found that gallic acid is an active compound of Graptopetalum paraguayense E. Walther, which has been reported to inhibit T-helper 2 cytokines. Currently, we assumed that Graptopetalum paraguayense E. Walther may potentially protect against ovalbumin-induced allergy and airway inflammation. Results demonstrated that Graptopetalum paraguayense E. Walther ethanolic extracts (GPE) clearly inhibited airway inflammation, mucus cell hyperplasia, and eosinophilia in OVA-challenged mice. Additionally, GPE also prevented T-cell infiltration and Th2 cytokines, including interleukin- (IL-)4, IL-5, and IL-13 generations in bronchial alveolar lavage fluid. The adhesion molecules ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 were substantially reduced by GPE treatment mediated by Nrf2 activation. Moreover, GPE attenuated GATA3 expression and inhibited Th2 signals of the T cells.     Investigation of Landslides and Debris Flows in Tachia Watershed Between Maan Dam and Techi Dam

    The Chi-Chi earthquake and subsequent typhoon events induced severe landslides and debris flows in the watershed of Tachia river. It inflicted severe damage to the power generation facilities and highway links. For the rehabilitation planning, quantitative assessment of landslides, debris flows and river deposits were conducted by using aerial photos and satellite images obtained at six stages of earthquake and typhoon events. The future trends of landslide and debris flow were also investigated by using empirical models. The long-term deposition or scouring was also conducted by numerical simulation. The results show that over 50,000,000 to 70,000,000m3 of sliding volume were induced in the Chi-Chi earthquake and subsequent typhoon events during 1999 to 2005. By conservative estimation, 60% of the debris still remain in the watershed, which will cause silting of the main river channel in the future. The deposition in the main river channel will increase with decreasing rate in the future, and river channel scouring is not expected to occur in the future 20 to 30 years

    Exploring Individuals’ Loyalty To Online Support Groups From the Perspective Of Social Support

    Prior research indicates that social support allows individuals to have additional skills to handle stresses, enhance self-esteem, and increase psychological well-being. Online social networks have become an emerging and important source of social support. However, little research has been done to explore how IT usage may improve the well-being and life quality of individuals, especially patients. Little research has been done to empirically examine individuals’ loyalty toward online social groups from the perspective of social support. This study aims to develop an integrated research model to the impact of online social support on psychological well-being and group identification, and individuals’ subsequent loyalty toward online social groups. Online social support group was operationalized as a second-order construct with four components: informational, emotional, esteem, and network supports. Data collected from 537 users of online support groups for mothers in Taiwan provide strong support for the research model. The results indicate that online social support is positively associated with psychological well-being and group identification, which in turn have a positive effect on moms’ loyalty toward online social groups. Implications for theory and practice and suggestions for future research are provided

    Association between health examination items and body mass index among school children in Hualien, Taiwan

    BACKGROUND: To assess the prevalence of obesity and major physical examination items including dental caries, myopia, pinworm, hematuria, and proteinuria among school children in Hualien, Taiwan. In addition, the health status differences between gender, grader, levels of residence urbanization, and body mass index (BMI) were examined. METHODS: Cross-sectional studies with a total of 11,080 students (age, 7–14 years) in grades 1, 4, and 7 were evaluated for weight, height, routine physical examination, and urine analysis during the 2010 Student Health Examination in Hualien. Frequencies, Chi-square test, and logistic regression were conducted using SPSS. RESULTS: Of the 11,080 students evaluated, 1357 (12.2%) were overweight, and 1421 (12.8%) were obese. There were significant differences in overweight/obese prevalence by gender, by grader, and by levels of residence urbanization. Dental caries, myopia, and obesity were the most prevalent health problems among these students (75.6%, 33.0%, and 12.8%, respectively). In crude and adjusted analyses, research results showed that there were significant differences in the prevalence of major physical examination items between different gender, grader, levels of residence urbanization, and BMI groups. Girls had a higher prevalence of dental caries, myopia, and hematuria than boys (all p < 0.01), whereas boys had a higher prevalence of pinworm than girls (p = 0.02). Students in higher grades had significantly higher prevalence of myopia, hematuria, and proteinuria (all p < 0.01), whereas students in lower grades had higher prevalence of dental caries and pinworm (p < 0.01). Students with abnormal BMI had lower prevalence of pinworm (p < 0.01). Students residing in suburban and rural areas had higher prevalence of dental caries, pinworm, and hematuria (all p < 0.01), and lower prevalence of myopia than students residing in urban areas (all p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Routine health examination provides an important way to detect students’ health problems. Our study elucidated major health problems among school children in Hualien, Taiwan. In addition, the results also indicated that the prevalence of health problems had a significant relationship with gender, grader, levels of residence urbanization, and BMI. It is suggested that school health interventions should consider students’ health profiles along with their risk factors status in planning

    Estimation of measurement uncertainty caused by surface gradient for a white light interferometer

    Although the Scanning White Light Interferometer can provide measurement results with sub-nanometer resolution, the measurement accuracy is far from perfect. The surface roughness and surface gradient have significant influence on the measurement uncertainty since the corresponding height differences within a single CCD pixel cannot be resolved. This paper presents an uncertainty estimation method for estimating the measurement uncertainty due to the surface gradient of the workpiece. The method is developed based on the mathematical expression of an uncertainty estimation model which is derived and verified through a series of experiments. The results show that there is a notable similarity between the predicted uncertainty from the uncertainty estimation model and the experimental measurement uncertainty, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the method. With the establishment of the proposed uncertainty estimation method, the uncertainty associated with the measurement result can be determined conveniently

The isolate was confirmed by 16S rRNA sequencing analysis.
