Aggregation induced photodynamic therapy enhancement based on linear and nonlinear excited FRET of fluorescent organic nanoparticles

    Get PDF
A binary molecule can self-assemble to form fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) based on the Aggregation-Induced Emission Enhancement (AIEE) property and subsequently, presents an efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to generate singlet oxygen under linear and nonlinear light sources. Biologically, this FON-photosensitizer is much more phototoxic to cancer cells than to normal cells without significant dark toxicity. Eventually, a new approach, called FON FRET-PDT or AIEE FRET-PDT, to promote the PDT effect is expected

    Get PDF
This study proposes a method for maintaining parallelism of the optical cavity of a laser interferometer using machine learning. The Fabry-Perot interferometer is utilized as an experimental optical structure in this research due to its advantage of having a brief optical structure. The supervised machine learning method is used to train algorithms to accurately classify and predict the tilt angle of the plane mirror using labeled interference images. Based on the predicted results, stepper motors are fixed on a plane mirror that can automatically adjust the pitch and yaw angles. According to the experimental results, the average correction error and standard deviation in 17-grid classification experiment are 32.38 and 11.21 arcseconds, respectively. In 25-grid classification experiment, the average correction error and standard deviation are 19.44 and 7.86 arcseconds, respectively. The results show that this parallelism maintenance technology has essential for the semiconductor industry and precision positioning technology

Preparation, characterization, and application of titanium nano-tube array in dye-sensitized solar cells

The vertically orientated TiO2 nanotube array (TNA) decorated with TiO2 nano-particles was successfully fabricated by electrochemically anodizing titanium (Ti) foils followed by Ti-precursor post-treatment and annealing process. The TNA morphology characterized by SEM and TEM was found to be filled with TiO2 nano-particles interior and exterior of the TiO2 nano-tubes after titanium (IV) n-butoxide (TnB) treatment, whereas TiO2 nano-particles were only found inside of TiO2 nano-tubes upon titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) treatment. The efficiency in TNA-based DSSCs was improved by both TnB and TiCl4 treatment presumably due to the increase of dye adsorption

HLA typing in Taiwanese patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma

AbstractBackground/purposeThe human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system, which plays a vital role in immunity, is the most polymorphic gene complex found in the human genome. This study investigated HLA-related alleles and haplotypes in Taiwanese patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).Materials and methodsHLA class I (HLA-A and HLA-B) antigens and class II (HLA-DRB1) alleles were determined in 105 patients with OSCC and compared with those in 190 healthy controls. The antigens were measured serologically and the alleles by sequencing-based typing.ResultsCompared with the control group, patients with OSCC had higher frequencies of HLA-A24, HLA-B54, HLA-DRB1*0405, and HLA-DRB1*1201, while they had lower frequencies of HLA-B58 and HLA-DRB1*1302. Haplotype frequencies also varied significantly in individuals with OSCC, with certain haplotypes associated with lymph node metastases or a particular tumor stage.ConclusionThese results suggest that HLA genetic factors influence susceptibility to OSCC and perhaps to lymph node metastasis and tumor progression

Seismic behavior of pile in liquefiable soil ground by centrifuge shaking table tests

    Get PDF
Dramatic failure of pile foundations caused by the soil liquefaction was founded and leading to many studies on the seismic behavior of pile. The failures were often accompanied with settlement, lateral displacement and tilting of superstructures. Therefore soil-structure interaction effects must be properly considered in the design of pile. Two centrifuge models were conducted by shaking table at an acceleration field of 80 g. The purpose of this study was to investigate the seismic response of piles attached with different tip mass and embedded in liquefied or non-liquefied deposits. From the results, it was found that the maximum bending moment of pile occurs at the depth of 4 m and 5 m for dry sand and saturated sand models, respectively. The more tip mass leads to the more permanent lateral displacement and the more residual bending moment

Bronchiolitis Obliterans Organizing Pneumonia in Swine Associated with Porcine Circovirus Type 2 Infection

Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) is a chronic respiratory disease. Although the pathogenesis of BOOP is still incompletely understood, BOOP is responsive to steroids and has a good prognosis. In our five pigs with chronic postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), typical BOOP lesions were revealed. All five porcine lungs showed typical intraluminal plugs, and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) was identified. They also exhibited similar pathologic findings such as proliferation of type II pneumocytes and myofibroblasts (MFBs), extracellular collagen matrix (ECM) deposition, and fragmentation of elastic fibers. MFBs migration correlative molecules, for instance, gelatinase A, B and osteopontin, appeared strongly in the progressing marginal area of polypoid intraluminal plugs of fibrotic lesion. These molecules colocalized with the active MFBs. Both gelatinase activity and intercellular level of active MFBs were significantly increased (P < .05). Porcine chronic bronchopneumonia leads to BOOP and it is associated with PCV2 persistent infection. Swine BOOP demonstrates similar cellular constituents with human BOOP. Perhaps their molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis operate in a similar way. Thus we infer that the swine BOOP can be considered as a potential animal model for human BOOP associated with natural viral infection. Moreover, it is more convenient to obtain samples

Outcome for self-expandable metal stents in patients with malignant gastroduodenal obstruction: A single center experience

SummaryBackgroundMalignant gastric outlet obstruction causes significant malnutrition and morbidity. The implantation of a metallic stent is an alternative palliative treatment to allow the intake of food in these patients.Patients and MethodsThirty-eight consecutive patients with malignant gastric outlet obstruction who had received an uncovered metallic stent placement in our department from April 2010 to April 2012 were enrolled for analysis. The mean follow-up time was 6.3 months. Food intake, measured by the Gastric Outlet Obstruction Scoring System, complications, duration of stent patency, and survival were evaluated.ResultsThe technical and clinical success rates of the procedure were 100% and 94.7%, respectively. The Gastric Outlet Obstruction Scoring System scores were significantly improved at 1 day, 7 days, and 30 days after the implantation compared with those prior to the procedure (p < 0.001). Aspiration pneumonia developed in two patients (5.2%) after the procedure. One of these patients developed respiratory failure and died 3 days later. Stent dysfunction developed in 11 of 38 patients (28.9%) during the follow-up period; one patient (2.6%) experienced migration of the stent 38 days later due to resolution of the stricture; 10 patients (26.3%) had stent restenosis. The median time of stent patency was 120 days. The presence of peritoneal carcinomatosis when the procedure was carried out was a significantly poor predictive factor of stent patency [hazard ratio (HR) 7.9, p = 0.039]. The median survival of the patients was 156 days. Poor performance status ≥3; HR 2.647, p = 0.012) and nongastric cancer origin (HR 3.466, p = 0.008) were associated with a significantly short survival time.ConclusionMetallic stent placement is an effective and relatively safe treatment for patients with malignant gastric outlet obstruction

“Same same” but different? Exploring the impact of perceived organizational support at the school and teacher levels on teachers’ job engagement and organizational citizenship behavior

All countries in the world are currently trying to implement educational reform, which increases the additional workload of teachers. It is more important to discuss how to inspire teachers’ enthusiasm for educational reform from the perspective of organizational support (OS). Previous research on OS was limited to perceived organizational support (POS), but in recent years group-level OS has been considered the most promising. There is no study comparing POS and group-level OS in education, and therefore this study explored the relationships between OS, job engagement (JE) and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) in an educational context. In particular, OS was examined at the individual-level (POS) and the aggregated group-level (school organizational support, SOS). Analysis was performed using structural equation modeling (SEM) at both single and multiple levels. SEM results showed direct and positive relationships of individual-level POS with both JE and OCB. Moreover, JE is directly and positively related to OCB and plays the partial mediating role of the indirect and positive impact of POS on OCB. Multilevel structural equation modeling (MSEM) analysis revealed direct and positive relationships of SOS with teachers’ JE, which was directly and positively related to their OCB. While SOS had no significant positive relationship with OCB, it did have a positive impact on OCB through the mediation of JE. Comparison between SEM and MSEM results revealed the change in effect of OS on OCB from significant to insignificant, thus implying full mediation effect of JE when SOS is considered
