    Prediction of the bias voltage dependent magnetic contrast in spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy

    This work is concerned with the theoretical description of the contrast, i.e., the apparent height difference between two lateral surface positions on constant current spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) images. We propose a method to predict the bias voltage dependent magnetic contrast from single point tunneling current or differential conductance measurements, without the need of scanning large areas of the surface. Depending on the number of single point measurements, the bias positions of magnetic contrast reversals and of the maximally achievable magnetic contrast can be determined. We validate this proposal by simulating SP-STM images on a complex magnetic surface employing a recently developed approach based on atomic superposition. Furthermore, we show evidence that the tip electronic structure and magnetic orientation have a major effect on the magnetic contrast. Our theoretical prediction is expected to inspire experimentalists to considerably reduce measurement efforts for determining the bias dependent magnetic contrast on magnetic surfaces.Comment: 28 pages manuscript, 1 table, 6 figure

    Superconductivity in the Two-Dimensional tt-JJ Model at Low Hole Doping

    By combining a generalized Lanczos scheme with the variational Monte Carlo method we can optimize the short- and long-range properties of the groundstate separately. This allows us to measure the long-range order of the groundstate of the tt-JJ model as a function of the coupling constant J/tJ/t, and identify a region of finite d-wave superconducting long-range order.     Spin transition in Gd3_3N@C80_{80}, detected by low-temperature on-chip SQUID technique

    We present a magnetic study of the Gd3_3N@C80_{80} molecule, consisting of a Gd-trimer via a Nitrogen atom, encapsulated in a C80_{80} cage. This molecular system can be an efficient contrast agent for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) applications. We used a low-temperature technique able to detect small magnetic signals by placing the sample in the vicinity of an on-chip SQUID. The technique implemented at NHMFL has the particularity to operate in high magnetic fields of up to 7 T. The Gd3_3N@C80_{80} shows a paramagnetic behavior and we find a spin transition of the Gd3_3N structure at 1.2 K. We perform quantum mechanical simulations, which indicate that one of the Gd ions changes from a 8S7/2^8S_{7/2} state (L=0,S=7/2L=0, S=7/2) to a 7F6^7F_{6} state (L=S=3,J=6L=S=3, J=6), likely due to a charge transfer between the C80_{80} cage and the ion

    Higgs Triplets, Decoupling, and Precision Measurements

    Electroweak precision data has been extensively used to constrain models containing physics beyond that of the Standard Model. When the model contains Higgs scalars in representations other than SU(2) singlets or doublets, and hence rho not equal to one at tree level, a correct renormalization scheme requires more inputs than the three needed for the Standard Model. We discuss the connection between the renormalization of models with Higgs triplets and the decoupling properties of the models as the mass scale for the scalar triplet field becomes much larger than the electroweak scale. The requirements of perturbativity of the couplings and agreement with electroweak data place strong restrictions on models with Higgs triplets. Our results have important implications for Little Higgs type models and other models with rho not equal to one at tree level.Comment: 23 page

    Characterization of the 4-canonical birationality of algebraic threefolds

    In this article we present a 3-dimensional analogue of a well-known theorem of E. Bombieri (in 1973) which characterizes the bi-canonical birationality of surfaces of general type. Let XX be a projective minimal 3-fold of general type with Q\mathbb{Q}-factorial terminal singularities and the geometric genus pg(X)5p_g(X)\ge 5. We show that the 4-canonical map ϕ4\phi_4 is {\it not} birational onto its image if and only if XX is birationally fibred by a family C\mathscr{C} of irreducible curves of geometric genus 2 with KXC0=1K_X\cdot C_0=1 where C0C_0 is a general irreducible member in C\mathscr{C}.Comment: 25 pages, to appear in Mathematische Zeitschrif
