Facilitating teaching and learning resources through the World Wide Web - case accounts of industrial design and living technology education in Taiwan

Designers have a key role to play in exploring the potential uses of technology, understanding and managing its impact on society, and ensuring that it is accessible, usable, and useful. There are a number of resources on the Internet aimed specially at students and faculties. The Internet provides access to the World Wide Web, Usenet, Ftp, and Telnet, which have tremendous educational potential. The World Wide Web has more appeal, because of its hypermedia foundation, its access to an immense volume of rapidly evolving information, and its access to the latest information. Because of all these characteristics, the World Wide Web becomes a potent tool for educational purposes. This paper discusses these features of the Internet and its application to teaching and learning, possible sophisticated pedagogical uses of the web, and notes web-based content for assisting both industrial design and living technology education in Taiwan. There are 18 universities offering Industrial Design at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Taiwan; Living Technology, the course title for technology education in Taiwan, is a requirement for secondary students. The bases of this research are archival study, on-line searching, and focus group panel discussions. Finally, the strategies of implementing web-based content are presented in brief case accounts

Transition from Tonks-Girardeau gas to super-Tonks-Girardeau gas as an exact many-body dynamics problem

We investigate transition of a one-dimensional interacting Bose gas from a strongly repulsive regime to a strongly attractive regime, where a stable highly excited state known as the super Tonks-Girardeau gas was experimentally realized very recently. By solving exact dynamics of the integrable Lieb-Liniger Bose gas, we demonstrate that such an excited gas state can be a very stable dynamic state. Furthermore we calculate the breathing mode of the super Tonks-Girardeau gas which is found to be in good agreement with experimental observation. Our results show that the highly excited super Tonks-Girardeau gas phase can be well understood from the fundamental theory of the solvable Bose gas.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, version to appear in Phys. Tunneling Qubit Operation on a Protected Josephson Junction Array

We discuss a protected quantum computation process based on a hexagon Josephson junction array. Qubits are encoded in the punctured array, which is topologically protected. The degeneracy is related to the number of holes. The topological degeneracy is lightly shifted by tuning the flux through specific hexagons. We also show how to perform single qubit operation and basic quantum gate operations in this system.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. The published version in Phys. Rev., A81(2010)01232

Realization of effective super Tonks-Girardeau gases via strongly attractive one-dimensional Fermi gases

A significant feature of the one-dimensional super Tonks-Girardeau gas is its metastable gas-like state with a stronger Fermi-like pressure than for free fermions which prevents a collapse of atoms. This naturally suggests a way to search for such strongly correlated behaviour in systems of interacting fermions in one dimension. We thus show that the strongly attractive Fermi gas without polarization can be effectively described by a super Tonks-Girardeau gas composed of bosonic Fermi pairs with attractive pair-pair interaction. A natural description of such super Tonks-Girardeau gases is provided by Haldane generalized exclusion statistics. In particular, we find that they are equivalent to ideal particles obeying more exclusive statistics than Fermi-Dirac statistics.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Quantum correlations in a cluster-like system

We discuss a cluster-like 1D system with triplet interaction. We study the topological properties of this system. We find that the degeneracy depends on the topology of the system, and well protected against external local perturbations. All these facts show that the system is topologically ordered. We also find a string order parameter to characterize the quantum phase transition. Besides, we investigate two-site correlations including entanglement, quantum discord and mutual information. We study the different divergency behaviour of the correlations. The quantum correlation decays exponentially in both topological and magnetic phases, and diverges in reversed power law at the critical point. And we find that in TQPT systems, the global difference of topology induced by dimension can be reflected in local quantum correlations.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

How the Design Leadership and Strategic Design Drive New Value in Enterprises and Organizations

    Get PDF
Today's design has shifted from the original primary pursuit of appearance and function to processes and systems, creating new meanings for corporate strategies, products and services. Nowadays, enterprises are increasingly paying attention to the power of design, and regard design as the main innovation method and incorporate it into the organizations. Design began to be considered a key role at the top of large organizations. Although people recognize that design can bring good effects to enterprises and organizations, and there is growing interest in cultivating design thinking, what are the leaders who can lead enterprises, organizations and have design thinking? Their characteristics and how to formulate and plan strategic design still not fully elucidated. Therefore, this research uses related theories to understand the way of thinking and characteristics of design leaders, only in this way we formulate good strategic design for enterprises and organizations, and become an indispensable and important help in today rapidly changing world
