    Universal entanglement signatures of foliated fracton phases

    Fracton models exhibit a variety of exotic properties and lie beyond the conventional framework of gapped topological order. In a previous work, we generalized the notion of gapped phase to one of foliated fracton phase by allowing the addition of layers of gapped two-dimensional resources in the adiabatic evolution between gapped three-dimensional models. Moreover, we showed that the X-cube model is a fixed point of one such phase. In this paper, according to this definition, we look for universal properties of such phases which remain invariant throughout the entire phase. We propose multi-partite entanglement quantities, generalizing the proposal of topological entanglement entropy designed for conventional topological phases. We present arguments for the universality of these quantities and show that they attain non-zero constant value in non-trivial foliated fracton phases.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure

    Foliated fracton order in the checkerboard model

    In this work, we show that the checkerboard model exhibits the phenomenon of foliated fracton order. We introduce a renormalization group transformation for the model that utilizes toric code bilayers as an entanglement resource, and show how to extend the model to general three-dimensional manifolds. Furthermore, we use universal properties distilled from the structure of fractional excitations and ground-state entanglement to characterize the foliated fracton phase and find that it is the same as two copies of the X-cube model. Indeed, we demonstrate that the checkerboard model can be transformed into two copies of the X-cube model via an adiabatic deformation.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

    We establish the presence of foliated fracton order in the Majorana checkerboard model. In particular, we describe an entanglement renormalization group transformation which utilizes toric code layers as resources of entanglement, and furthermore discuss entanglement signatures and fractional excitations of the model. In fact, we give an exact local unitary equivalence between the Majorana checkerboard model and the semionic X-cube model augmented with decoupled fermionic modes. This mapping demonstrates that the model lies within the X-cube foliated fracton phase.Comment: 13 pages, 17 figure

    Improving Timely Sepsis Care Through Staff Education Within the Emergency Department

    Problem: This project was implemented to decrease patient fallout rates through timely compliance with sepsis management according to the SEP-1 bundle. The SEP-1 bundle is already implemented in the emergency department. However, a microsystem assessment indicated barriers are preventing the achievement of the SEP-1 bundle milestones. Context: This 16-bed emergency department (ED) at an urban Bay Area hospital provides 24-hour emergency services to individuals who suffer from medical injuries, accidents, and other serious health conditions. A random audit of the electronic health system (EHS) revealed that this emergency department consistently fails to meet the sepsis management time goals by 90%. Interventions: A video presentation was created based on the themes identified from the gap survey and the sepsis compliance and fallout metrics. In addition, the bulletin board in the staff break room was updated to provide a visual representation of current progress. Measures: The outcome measure used is the percentage of patient fallouts in septic patients who received appropriate and timely sepsis management in the ED. The target goal is 0%. The process measures are the percentages of each sepsis compliance metric that has met its timed goals. The target goal is 90%. Lastly, the balancing measure includes the percentage of nursing staff engagement. The target goal is 100%. Results: Data limitations and unavailability is restricting the outcome, process, and balancing measures from being obtained. As a result, no quantitative data is available for review. Conclusions: Although the outcome measures were not obtained, there has been significant improvement in awareness by nursing staff on the importance of timely sepsis intervention. Further management support ensures promising results from the continuation of the project

    Social support communication behavior, anxiety symptomatology, and marital satisfaction among distressed couples

    The purpose of this study is to contribute to the knowledge base on anxiety symptomatology, marital satisfaction, and social support by examining the unique relationships among these 3 variables, as well as the role of social support communication as a moderator of the existing relationship between anxiety symptomatology and marital satisfaction, to inform clinical endeavors with couples who are navigating symptoms of anxiety. Gender differences between husbands and wives in these associations were also examined. Using previously collected pre-treatment data from a sub-sample of 96 chronically and seriously distressed heterosexual couples seeking couple therapy, simultaneous linear regressions were run between partners’ anxiety symptomatology, as measured by the anxiety subscale of the COMPASS, their own marital satisfaction, as measured by the DAS, and their own negative and positive social support communication, coded from observed social support interactions using the SSIRS. Partners’ social support behavior as a moderator of their anxiety symptomatology and marital satisfaction was examined using HLM. Partners’ marital satisfaction was found to be significantly negatively related to their negative social support behavior and significantly positively related to their positive social support behavior. However, contrary to predictions, marital satisfaction and anxiety were not significantly related, anxiety symptomatology and social support communication (either negative or positive) were not significantly related, and there was no support for social support communication (either negative or positive) moderating the effect of anxiety symptomatology on marital satisfaction. No significant gender differences were found. Limitations of the current study and clinical implications are discussed
