    High Range Resolution Profile Construction Exploiting Modified Fractional Fourier Transformation

    This paper addresses the discrimination of closely spaced high speed group targets with radar transmitting linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulses. The high speed target motion leads to range migration and target dispersion and thereby the discriminating capability of the high range resolution profile (HRRP) deteriorating significantly. An effective processing approach composed of stretch processing (SP), modified fractional Fourier transform (FrFT), and multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm is proposed to deal with this problem. Firstly, SP is adopted to transform the received LFM with Doppler distortions into narrow band LFM signals. Secondly, based on the two-dimensional range/velocity plane constructed by the modified FrFT, the velocity of the high speed group target is estimated and compensated with just one single pulse. After the compensation of range migration and target dispersion simultaneously, the resolution of the HRRP achieved by single pulse transmission improves significantly in the high speed group targets scenarios. Finally, MUSIC algorithm with superresolution capability is utilized to make a more explicit discrimination between the scatterers in comparison with the conventional SP method.     Discovery of two new hypervelocity stars from the LAMOST spectroscopic surveys

    We report the discovery of two new unbound hypervelocity stars (HVSs) from the LAMOST spectroscopic surveys. They are respectively a B2V type star of ~ 7 M⊙_{\rm \odot} with a Galactic rest-frame radial velocity of 502 km/s at a Galactocentric radius of ~ 21 kpc and a B7V type star of ~ 4 M⊙_{\rm \odot} with a Galactic rest-frame radial velocity of 408 km/s at a Galactocentric radius of ~ 30 kpc. The origins of the two HVSs are not clear given their currently poorly measured proper motions. However, the future data releases of Gaia should provide proper motion measurements accurate enough to solve this problem. The ongoing LAMOST spectroscopic surveys are expected to yield more HVSs to form a statistical sample, providing vital constraint on understanding the nature of HVSs and their ejection mechanisms.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

    Disrupting the Interaction between Retinoblastoma Protein and Raf-1 Leads to Defects in Progenitor Cell Proliferation and Survival during Early Inner Ear Development

    The retinoblastoma protein (pRb) is required for cell-cycle exit of embryonic mammalian hair cells but is not required for hair cell fate determination and early differentiation, and this provides a strategy for hair cell regeneration by manipulating the pRb pathway. To reveal the mechanism of pRb functional modification in the inner ear, we compared the effects of attenuated pRb phosphorylation by an inhibitor of the Mitogen-Activated Protein (MAP) kinase pathway and an inhibitor of the Rb–Raf-1 interaction on cultured chicken otocysts. We demonstrated that the activity of pRb is correlated with its phosphorylation state, which is regulated by a newly established cell cycle-independent pathway mediated by the physical interaction between Raf-1 and pRb. The phosphorylation of pRb plays an important role during the early stage of inner ear development, and attenuated phosphorylation in progenitor cells leads to cell cycle arrest and increased apoptosis along with a global down-regulation of the genes involved in cell cycle progression. Our study provides novel routes to modulate pRb function for hair cell regeneration

    Non-coding RNAs in cardiac fibrosis: Emerging biomarkers and therapeutic targets

    Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are a class of RNA molecules that do not encode proteins. ncRNAs are involved in cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, metabolism, and other physiological processes as well as the pathogenesis of diseases. Cardiac fibrosis is increasingly recognized as a common final pathway in advanced heart diseases. Many studies have shown that the occurrence and development of cardiac fibrosis is closely related to the regulation of ncRNAs. This review will highlight recent updates regarding the involvement of ncRNAs in cardiac fibrosis, and their potential as emerging biomarkers and therapeutic targets
