    Measurement of ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays to baryon pairs

    A sample of 3.95M ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays registered in the BES detector are used to study final states containing pairs of octet and decuplet baryons. We report branching fractions for ψ(2S)→ppˉ\psi(2S)\to p\bar{p}, ΛΛˉ\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}, ÎŁ0Σˉ0\Sigma^0\bar{\Sigma}{}^0, Ξ−Ξˉ+\Xi^-\bar{\Xi}{}^+, Δ++Δˉ−−\Delta^{++}\bar{\Delta}{}^{--}, ÎŁ+(1385)Σˉ−(1385)\Sigma^+(1385)\bar{\Sigma}{}^-(1385), Ξ0(1530)Ξˉ0(1530)\Xi^0(1530)\bar{\Xi}{}^0(1530), and Ω−Ωˉ+\Omega^-\bar{\Omega}{}^+. These results are compared to expectations based on the SU(3)-flavor symmetry, factorization, and perturbative QCD.Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, 4 table

    First Measurement of the Branching Fraction of the Decay psi(2S) --> tau tau

    The branching fraction of the psi(2S) decay into tau pair has been measured for the first time using the BES detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. The result is Bττ=(2.71±0.43±0.55)×10−3B_{\tau\tau}=(2.71\pm 0.43 \pm 0.55) \times 10^{-3}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This value, along with those for the branching fractions into e+e- and mu+mu of this resonance, satisfy well the relation predicted by the sequential lepton hypothesis. Combining all these values with the leptonic width of the resonance the total width of the psi(2S) is determined to be (252±37)(252 \pm 37) keV.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

    A Unified Approach to the Classical Statistical Analysis of Small Signals

    We give a classical confidence belt construction which unifies the treatment of upper confidence limits for null results and two-sided confidence intervals for non-null results. The unified treatment solves a problem (apparently not previously recognized) that the choice of upper limit or two-sided intervals leads to intervals which are not confidence intervals if the choice is based on the data. We apply the construction to two related problems which have recently been a battle-ground between classical and Bayesian statistics: Poisson processes with background, and Gaussian errors with a bounded physical region. In contrast with the usual classical construction for upper limits, our construction avoids unphysical confidence intervals. In contrast with some popular Bayesian intervals, our intervals eliminate conservatism (frequentist coverage greater than the stated confidence) in the Gaussian case and reduce it to a level dictated by discreteness in the Poisson case. We generalize the method in order to apply it to analysis of experiments searching for neutrino oscillations. We show that this technique both gives correct coverage and is powerful, while other classical techniques that have been used by neutrino oscillation search experiments fail one or both of these criteria.Comment: 40 pages, 15 figures.     Nuclear Stopping as A Probe to In-medium Nucleon-nucleon Cross Section in Intermediate Energy Heavy Ion Collisions

    Using an isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics, nuclear stopping in intermediate heavy ion collisions has been studied. The calculation has been done for colliding systems with different neutron-proton ratios in beam energy ranging from 15MeV/u to 150MeV/u. It is found that, in the energy region from above Fermi energy to 150MeV/u, nuclear stopping is very sensitive to the isospin dependence of in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section, but insensitive to symmetry potential. From this investigation, we propose that nuclear stopping can be used as a new probe to extract the information on the isospin dependence of in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions

    Using the upgraded Beijing Spectrometer (BESII), we have measured the total cross section for e+e−e^+e^- annihilation into hadronic final states at center-of-mass energies of 2.6, 3.2, 3.4, 3.55, 4.6 and 5.0 GeV.     Measurement of the Inclusive Charm Cross Section at 4.03 GeV and 4.14 GeV

    The cross section for charmed meson production at s=4.03\sqrt{s} = 4.03 and 4.14 GeV has been measured with the Beijing Spectrometer. The measurement was made using 22.3 pb−1pb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- data collected at 4.03 GeV and 1.5 pb−1pb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- data collected at 4.14 GeV. Inclusive observed cross sections for the production of charged and neutral D mesons and momentum spectra are presented. Observed cross sections were radiatively corrected to obtain tree level cross sections. Measurements of the total hadronic cross section are obtained from the charmed meson cross section and an extrapolation of results from below the charm threshold.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures.     Measurement of the chi_{c2} Polarization in psi(2S) to gamma chi_{c2}

    The polarization of the chi_{c2} produced in psi(2S) decays into gamma chi_{c2} is measured using a sample of 14*10^6 psi(2S) events collected by BESII at the BEPC. A fit to the chi_{c2} production and decay angular distributions in psi(2S) to gamma chi_{c2}, chi_{c2} to pi pi and KK yields values x=A_1/A_0=2.08+/-0.44 and y=A_2/A_0=3.03 +/-0.66, with a correlation rho=0.92 between them, where A_{0,1,2} are the chi_{c2} helicity amplitudes. The measurement agrees with a pure E1 transition, and M2 and E3 contributions do not differ significantly from zero.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Study of the P-wave charmonium state \chi_{cJ} in \psi(2S) decays

    The processes ψ(2S)â†’ÎłÏ€+π−\psi(2S)\to \gamma \pi^+ \pi^-, ÎłK+K−\gamma K^+ K^- and Îłppˉ\gamma p \bar{p} have been studied using a sample of 3.7×1063.7 \times 10^6 produced ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays. We determine the total width of the χc0\chi_{c0} to be Γχc0tot=14.3±2.0±3.0\Gamma^{tot}_{\chi_{c0}} = 14.3\pm 2.0\pm 3.0 MeV. We present the first measurement of the branching fraction B(χc0→ppˉ)=(16.3±4.4±5.4)×10−5B(\chi_{c0} \to p \bar{p}) = (16.3 \pm 4.4 \pm 5.4)\times 10^{-5}, where the first error is statistical and the second one systematic. Branching fractions of χc0,2→π+π−\chi_{c0,2} \to \pi^+ \pi^- and K+K−K^+ K^- are also reported.Comment: 10 pages, revtex, 3 figures, 2 table

    Measurement of the branching fractions of psi(2S) -> 3(pi+pi-) and J/psi -> 2(pi+pi-)

    Using data samples collected at sqrt(s) = 3.686GeV and 3.650GeV by the BESII detector at the BEPC, the branching fraction of psi(2S) -> 3(pi+pi-) is measured to be [4.83 +- 0.38(stat) +- 0.69(syst)] x 10^-4, and the relative branching fraction of J/psi -> 2(pi+pi-) to that of J/psi -> mu+mu- is measured to be [5.86 +- 0.19(stat) +- 0.39(syst)]% via psi(2S) -> (pi+pi-)J/psi, J/psi -> 2(pi+pi-). The electromagnetic form factor of 3(pi+pi-) is determined to be 0.21 +- 0.02 and 0.20 +- 0.01 at sqrt(s) = 3.686GeV and 3.650GeV, respectively.Comment: 17pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
