ON THE EQUIVALENCE OF IMPORT TARIFF AND QUOTA: THE CASE OF RICE IMPORT IN TAIWAN
This paper extends the existing theory on the equivalence of import tariff and quota. If the equivalence is defined on the domestic price level (weak equivalence), then either the zero conjectural variation for domestic country or a perfectly competitive market will be sufficient to support this equivalence. If the equivalence is defined both on the same domestic price level as well as tariff rate (strong equivalence), then the conditions are that either domestic country acts as a Cournot competitor and foreign country is a price taker, or both domestic and foreign country are price takers. An empirical spatial-equilibrium trade model is constructed to simulate the impacts of import tariff and quota. Using Taiwan¡¦s rice import as an example, the empirical results show that if Taiwan switches from the quota system to tariff system, the domestic rice price as well as total social welfare can be increased given the same import volume.International Relations/Trade,
Coronary Artery Ectasia Presenting With Recurrent Inferior Wall Myocardial Infarction
AbstractCoronary ectasia presenting as a recurrent inferior myocardial infarction has rarely been reported in the literature. Herein, we report a 61-year-old man who presented with persistent chest pain accompanied by ST segment elevation in the inferior ECG leads. Coronary angiography showed ectasia of the right coronary artery (RCA) and total occlusion from the middle RCA. Two stents were implanted separately in the middle and distal RCA. The patient was readmitted due to recurrent inferior wall infarction 15 months after discharge. He underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention again, and coronary angiography showed massive thrombosis and in-stent re-stenosis. The thrombosis and re-stenosis were successfully treated using balloon angioplasty. The patient was discharged under medical therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel. There were no anginal symptoms during the 3 years of follow up
Correlation between Pineal Activation and Religious Meditation Observed by Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
The human brain possesses plenty of functions but little is known about its scientific relationship with mind and spirit. Conferences^1,2^ focused on the connection between science and religion were held very recently in which neuroscientists, Buddhist scholars and Dalai Lama discussed attention, mental imagery, emotion, mind, brain functions and meditation, suggesting religious meditation offers an effective means to investigate the mystery of mind and spirit. In the past decade, scientists struggled to obtain brain mappings for various meditation styles using different brain imaging techniques and stimulating results have been observed^3-17^. In this letter we report that, together with other brain regions, pineal body exhibit significant activation during meditation process, supporting the long lasting speculation that pineal plays an important role in the intrinsic awareness which might concern spirit or soul. Pineal is known as an endocrine organ which produces substrates including melatonin and has been ascribed numerous even mysterious functions but its activation during meditation has never been observed by brain imaging technique. In seventeenth century, based on anatomic observation, Descartes ventured to suggest that pineal serves as the principal seat of the soul^18-20^. Inspired by its geometric center in the brain, physiologists, psychologists, philosophers and religionists have been speculating for centuries about pineal's function relevant to spirit and soul. In this study, we chose Chinese Original Quiet Sitting, one style of meditation, to explore this long lasting speculation by functional magnetic resonance imaging technique. Our results demonstrate a correlation between pineal activation and religious meditation which might have profound implications in physiological understanding of the intrinsic awareness
Altitude Hypoxia Increases Glucose Uptake in Human Heart
[[abstract]]Chen, Chi-Hsien, Yuh-Feng Liu, Shin-Da Lee, Wen-Chih Lee, Ying-Lan Tsai, Chien-Wen Hou, Chih-Yang Huang, and Chia-Hua Kuo. Altitude hypoxia increases glucose uptake in human heart. High Alt. Med Biol. 10:83-86, 2009.-Cardiac muscle is a highly oxygenated tissue that produces ATP mainly from fat oxidation. However, when the rate of oxygen demand exceeds oxygen supply, energy reliance on the carbohydrate substrate becomes crucial for sustaining normal cardiac function. In this study, the effect of acute altitude hypoxia on glucose uptake from circulation was determined, for the first time, in the human heart, using [18F]-2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in a simulated altitude condition (14% O-2, corresponding to similar to 3000 m above sea level) or room air (21% O-2). Our results showed that subjects (n = 6) started to experience difficulty in sustaining the hypoxic condition at similar to 45 min. This was concurrent with a substantially increased blood lactate concentration, which reflects an accelerated rate of anaerobic glycolysis. Hypoxia elevated FDG uptake above control by similar to 70% in heart, but not in limbs (representing primarily skeletal muscle), brain, and liver. This study provides the first human evidence for the hypoxia-stimulated glucose uptake in heart. At this hypoxia level, the previously observed hypoxia-stimulated glucose uptake in rat skeletal muscle was not confirmed in the human study
Uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic segmentectomy for fetal adenocarcinoma lung cancer with severe pulmonary emphysema: a case report
BackgroundFetal adenocarcinoma is a very rare subtype of lung adenocarcinoma. Its incidence ranges from 0.1 to 0.87% among all primary lung neoplasms. Low-grade types tend to appear in the younger generation, and the age ranges from 20 to 50 years with a mean age of around 35 years. Surgical resection is currently the best way to treat fetal adenocarcinoma lung cancer without distant metastasis.Case reportThis is a 56-year-old female who underwent low-dose computer tomography (LDCT) screening during the health examination. She used to be a heavy smoker for more than 30 years, and the CT images revealed severe bronchiectasis and emphysema. There is a solitary nodule with a diameter of 18.9 x 17.8mm in the central area of the left upper lobe. We decided to conduct left upper lobe S1~S3 segmentectomy under uniportal VATS. The surgery was successful, and the patient was discharged within one week and recovered well. The final diagnosis was fetal adenocarcinoma, low-grade (pT1cN0Mx, stage IA3).ConclusionThe first case reported as fetal adenocarcinoma lung cancer who underwent uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic segmentectomy. We believe it is a safe and feasible procedure for low-grade types fetal adenocarcinoma patient with poor pulmonary function
Design, Modeling and Development of a Serial Hybrid Motorcycle with HCCI Engine
This paper discusses the design, modeling, and development of small motorcycle equipped with a HCCI engine in an series hybrid configuration. A mathematical model was developed using MATLAB/Simulink and used to size the powertrain components and to predict fuel economy. A conventional 125 cc spark ignition engine was modified to run in HCCI combustion mode and integrated into a prototype vehicle. Dual-fuel and external EGR strategies were used to upgrade the engine speed and torque capabilities of the engine to meet the requirements of the powertrain. An electrical generator, hub-motor, battery pack and other power electronics devices were used to form the electrical system for the vehicle. The advantages of the proposed design compared to the original motorcycle with SI engine and CVT transmission are: 1) a reduction in noxious emissions due to the HCCI combustion, and 2) higher fuel economy in city driving because of the HCCI engine and series hybrid powertrain. Fuel economy was measured by driving the motorcycle on a chassis dynamometer using a sequence of ECE-40 driving cycles. The overall fuel economy was measured to be 73.7km/L which represents a 139.3% increase in fuel economy over the baseline vehicle
Early Detection of Tumor Response by FLT/MicroPET Imaging in a C26 Murine Colon Carcinoma Solid Tumor Animal Model
Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging demonstrated the change of glucose consumption of tumor cells, but problems with specificity and difficulties in early detection of tumor response to chemotherapy have led to the development of new PET tracers. Fluorine-18-fluorothymidine (18F-FLT) images cellular proliferation by entering the salvage pathway of DNA synthesis. In this study, we evaluate the early response of colon carcinoma to the chemotherapeutic drug, lipo-Dox, in C26 murine colorectal carcinoma-bearing mice by 18F-FDG and 18F-FLT. The male BALB/c mice were bilaterally inoculated with 1 × 105 and 1 × 106 C26 tumor cells per flank. Mice were intravenously treated with 10 mg/kg lipo-Dox at day 8 after 18F-FDG and 18F-FLT imaging. The biodistribution of 18F-FDG and 18F-FLT were followed by the microPET imaging at day 9. For the quantitative measurement of microPET imaging at day 9, 18F-FLT was superior to
18F-FDG for early detection of tumor response to Lipo-DOX at various tumor sizes (P < 0.05). The data of biodistribution showed similar results with those from the quantification of SUV (standard uptake value) by microPET imaging. The study indicates that 18F-FLT/microPET is a useful imaging modality for early detection of chemotherapy in the colorectal mouse model
