Towards Long-endurance Flight: Design and Implementation of a Variable-pitch Gasoline-engine Quadrotor
Majority of today's fixed-pitch, electric-power quadrotors have short flight
endurance ( 1 hour) which greatly limits their applications. This paper
presents a design methodology for the construction of a long-endurance
quadrotor using variable-pitch rotors and a gasoline-engine. The methodology
consists of three aspects. Firstly, the rotor blades and gasoline engine are
selected as a pair, so that sufficient lift can be comfortably provided by the
engine. Secondly, drivetrain and airframe are designed. Major challenges
include airframe vibration minimization and power transmission from one engine
to four rotors while keeping alternate rotors contra-rotating. Lastly, a PD
controller is tuned to facilitate preliminary flight tests. The methodology has
been verified by the construction and successful flight of our gasoline
quadrotor prototype, which is designed to have a flight time of 2 to 3 hours
and a maximum take-off weight of 10 kg.Comment: 6 page
Adhesion-induced lateral phase separation of multi-component membranes: the effect of repellers and confinement
We present a theoretical study for adhesion-induced lateral phase separation
for a membrane with short stickers, long stickers and repellers confined
between two hard walls. The effects of confinement and repellers on lateral
phase separation are investigated. We find that the critical potential depth of
the stickers for lateral phase separation increases as the distance between the
hard walls decreases. This suggests confinement-induced or force-induced mixing
of stickers. We also find that stiff repellers tend to enhance, while soft
repellers tend to suppress adhesion-induced lateral phase separation
A Note on Pretzelosity TMD Parton Distribution
We show that the transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution, called as
Pretzelosity function, is zero at any order in perturbation theory of QCD for a
single massless quark state. This implies that Pretzelosity function is not
factorized with the collinear transversity parton distribution at twist-2, when
the struck quark has a large transverse momentum. Pretzelosity function is in
fact related to collinear parton distributions defined with twist-4 operators.
In reality, Pretzelosity function of a hadron as a bound state of quarks and
gluons is not zero. Through an explicit calculation of Pretzelosity function of
a quark combined with a gluon nonzero result is found.Comment: improved explanation, published version in Phys. Lett.
Solitons in the one-dimensional forest fire model
Fires in the one-dimensional Bak-Chen-Tang forest fire model propagate as
solitons, resembling shocks in Burgers turbulence. The branching of solitons,
creating new fires, is balanced by the pair-wise annihilation of oppositely
moving solitons. Two distinct, diverging length scales appear in the limit
where the growth rate of trees, , vanishes. The width of the solitons, ,
diverges as a power law, , while the average distance between solitons
diverges much faster as .Comment: 4 pages with 2 figures include
Representation Class and Geometrical Invariants of Quantum States under Local Unitary Transformations
We investigate the equivalence of bipartite quantum mixed states under local
unitary transformations by introducing representation classes from a
geometrical approach. It is shown that two bipartite mixed states are
equivalent under local unitary transformations if and only if they have the
same representation class. Detailed examples are given on calculating
representation classes.Comment: 11 page
