Leading by Example: The Importance of Early Adopter Experimentation for Emerging Technologies Diffusion

    Get PDF
Information technology management regularly grapples with decisions related to identifying and diffusing emerging technologies in their organizations. Prototyping methodology, a form of rapid application development, is usually suggested as a useful approach for custom systems development. An adapted form of the prototyping methodology may prove useful for understanding early adopter experimentation episodes in the context of new technology diffusion. A case study examines one university that utilized early adopters to initiate the diffusion of an emerging collaborative technology. Implications for practice and research are discussed

Writing IS Teaching Tips: Guidelines for JISE Submission

    Get PDF
JISE has a lengthy history of inviting the submission of Teaching Tips for publication consideration in the journal. Past submission guidance for Teaching Tips has consisted of asking contributors to document the teaching experience and indicate what has worked, and not worked, in its execution within a journal page constraint of one to five pages. Over time, and with increased senior editor attention to the academic rigor of the journal, the editorial board and reviewers have exhibited more demanding expectations for the publication of Teaching Tips. Additionally, the kinds of Teaching Tips that are applicable to our information systems discipline have evolved into a recognizable set of characteristics that can be used to guide future authors of such articles. To encourage Teaching Tip submissions, the purpose of this article is threefold: (1) to provide potential authors with guidance for writing Teaching Tip manuscripts; (2) to provide reviewers and editors with advice for accepting manuscripts for publication; and (3) to contribute to the body-of-knowledge for the reflective practice of information systems education

Small firm effects in the UK stock market

This thesis will be concerned with investigating the empirical characteristics of stock returns, forUKfirms which are distinguished by market value. The primary aimof thisworkis to identify whether there are differences between the behaviour of large and small firm retums. A substantial amount of attention has recently focused upon how firm size influences the behaviour of stock returns in US markets, but, the role that firm size might have in determining the behaviour of stock returns in UK markets has received very little attention. The aim of this thesis is to redress this imbalance. The first part of this study will be concerned with showing that the returns of small firms are more predictable than the returns of large firms. The second part of this study will show that the relationship between risk and return depends on firm size. The third and final part of this thesis will show that not only are the mean returns of large and small firms different but that there are also important differences in the conditional variances of large and small firms. In all three parts of this thesis, important differences between the behaviour of large and small firm returns are documented for the first time

An Examination of the Relationship Between Computer Anxiety, Communication Apprehension and Student Experiences With Electronic Mail

Electronic mail (email) communication is fast becoming ubiquitous in the workplace and on the university campus (Garton and Wellman, 1995). Its wide availability and perceived usefulness make it a particularly attractive software tool for inclusion as a course instructional method. However, there has been little principled investigation into how this blending of computer technology and communication medium may be perceived by the users of such technology when integrated into a course as an instructional method1. This research is aimed at uncovering certain characteristics that might influence students\u27 experiences with this medium. We argue that due to the nature of the medium communication and computer its use will be affected by both computer anxiety and communication apprehension. To complicate matters further, the typical distinction between written or oral communication apprehension is likely to be less clear when we examine email. In this paper, we discuss our rationale for the research, the research question and propositions, current project status, and the potential contributions of this stream of research
