Background: Depression is one of the most under diagnosed and under reported in primary health settings. Depression is highly common and according to WHO by 2020, it would be the second-most prevalent condition worldwide. Physical illnesses and bio-psychosocial factors are common determinants of depression. Aims & Objectives: 1. To estimate prevalence of depression, 2. To determine associated factors among college going students. Material & Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among college going students. Half of the colleges were selected randomly and sample size was distributed on the basis of probability proportional to size (PPS). Assigned number of students from each college was selected by simple random sampling. Sample size of 1300 was calculated using formula (n) = ( Z1-? )2 P (100 - P ) / ?2. General Health Questionnaire (12 items) was used to diagnose psychiatric morbidity and those with this were administered Becks Depression Inventory II (21 items) scale for assessing the prevalence and level of depression. Both the scales were translated in local language and self-administered. The data was compiled and analyzed using Epi InfoTM. Results: A total of 1300 students were enrolled, psychiatric morbidity was present in 35% and prevalence of depression was 33%. Mild depression was found in 87% of the students with depression. Depression was higher among those aged >25 years, females, residing in nuclear families and studying science stream. Conclusion: Family support and adequate treatment are most important pillars of management

Calcifying Epithelial Odontogenic Cyst: A Case Report

    No full text
The Calcifying epithelial odontogenic cyst (CEOC/COC) is a relatively rare developmental odontogenic cyst. It is a pathological entity with certain characteristics of cyst, but also possesses features of a solid neoplasm and its malignant transformation is well documented. The similarity in nomenclature between Calcifying epithelial odontogenic cyst and Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor often leads to confusion. However, both are distinctly separate pathologic entities. A case of an 11 year old female patient presenting with a slowly progressive painless swelling and multiple missing teeth on right side of maxilla is reported here

Forecasting of Solar Radiation of an Area by Using Artificial Neural Network Technique through Matlab

    No full text
Over the years, solar radiation is the area of major concern. Most  of  the  inventions  done  in  last  few  years,  are  in renewable energy generation as conventional energy sources are not enough for years to come. There is a need of finding alternatives of nonrenewable sources. This study is totally based on solar energy to give some contribution to the development of renewable energy generation. In this paper, a detailed analysis has been made for forecasting of solar radiation by using Artificial Neural Network. In this Forecasting method the inputs are taken by using different sensors, which are connected by Ardunio UNO board. The collected data then stored in a excel sheet by a software called PLX-DAQ, which represents collected data into a graphical form for further studies. Now this data can be used for developing an ANN model into MATLAB by using ANN toolbox. The network that is developed in MATLAB can be trained and sufficient information can be extracted from it. Compressions can be carried out with the original data and trained data and the results now shows rate of error between both. This will also give the forecast accuracy i.e. obviously improved under variable weather conditions

Background: Substance and drug abuse is associated with severe psychosocial problems, violence and health complications. Aims: The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the oral hygiene status and sugar eating patterns among drug addicts with their age, gender and socio-economic status matched controls. Settings and Design: The present study comprised of two groups-Group A comprised of 100 drug addicts and Group B included 100 controls. The study sample were interviewed and subjected to a comprehensive intra-oral examination. Methods and Material: Standardized methods of evaluation were performed using mouth mirror, dental probe, explorer and WHO probe. Statistical Analysis: The data was subjected to statistical analysis using Chi Square test and student t-test. Results and Conclusions: CPITN index revealed bleeding in 56% addicts and calculus in 20% addicts. The mean DMFT of group A was 5.71 as compared to 2.45 in group B. The frequency of sugar consumption was found to be high in addicts as compared to the controls. Significant P values (< 0.001) of DMFT index, periodontal status and frequency of sugar consumption were obtained on statistical analysis. The caries status was found to be poor in addicts, but the periodontal treatment needs were similar for both group A and B. Oral health promotion should be undertaken in drug rehabilitation centers for overall success of withdrawl treatment

Mandibular osteonecrosis and teeth exfoliation after herpes zoster infection in an HIV-inflicted individual

    No full text
Herpes zoster (HZ) infection of the maxillary and mandibular divisions of the trigeminal nerve manifests orally as unilateral vesicular eruption localized to the skin and mucus membrane of the dermatome innervated by the trigeminal nerve. Herpes zoster infection has been observed in immunocompromised states like uncontrolled diabetes, cancer chemotherapy, lymphoproliferative diseases, and recently in HIV-positive patients. There are only a few case reports of osteonecrosis due to HZ in an HIV-positive patient in an Indian population, this being the first in a North Indian population. We propose that osteonecrosis should be considered as a strong indicator of HIV infection, especially in a developing country like India. The present case highlights the complexities which can arise in an HIV-inflicted individual suffering from HZ infection. Early diagnosis of such infections can lead to effective treatment and prevention of complications

Medical radiation countermeasures for nuclear and radiological emergencies: Current status and future perspectives

    No full text
Nuclear and radiological emergencies (NREs) occurred globally and recent incidences in India are indicating toward the need for comprehensive medical preparedness required both at incident site and hospitals. The enhanced threat attributed toward insurgency is another causative factor of worry. The response capabilities and operational readiness of responders (both health and non-health service providers) in contaminated environment need to be supported by advancement in R & D and technological efforts to develop prophylactics and radiation mitigators. It is essential to develop phase 1 alternatives of such drugs for unseen threats as a part of initial preparedness. At the incident site and hospital level, external decontamination procedures need to be standardized and supported by protective clothing and Shudika kits developed by INMAS. The medical management of exposure requires systematic approach to perform triage, resuscitation and curative care. The internal contamination requires decorporation agents to be administered based on procedural diagnostics. Various key issues pertaining to policy decisions, R & D promotion, community awareness, specialized infrastructure for NREs preparedness has been discussed. The present review is an attempt to provide vital information about the current status of various radiation countermeasures and future perspective(s) ahead

Intranasal curcumin and its evaluation in murine model of asthma

    No full text
Curcumin, a phytochemical present in turmeric, rhizome of Curcuma longa, has been shown to have a wide variety of pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-asthmatic properties. Curcumin is known for its low systemic bioavailability and rapid metabolization through oral route and has limited its applications. Over the recent decades, the interest in intranasal delivery as a non-invasive route for drugs has increased as target tissue for drug delivery since nasal mucosa offers numerous benefits. In this study, we evaluated intranasal curcumin following its absorption through nasal mucosa by a sensitive and validated high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the determination of intranasal curcumin in mouse blood plasma and lung tissue. Intranasal curcumin has been detected in plasma after 15 min to 3 h at pharmacological dose (5 mg/kg, i.n.), which has shown anti-asthmatic potential by inhibiting bronchoconstriction and inflammatory cell recruitment to the lungs. At considerably lower doses has proved better than standard drug disodium cromoglycate (DSCG 50 mg/kg, i.p.) by affecting inflammatory cell infiltration and histamine release in mouse model of asthma. HPLC detection revealed that curcumin absorption in lungs has started after 30 min following intranasal administration and retained till 3 h then declines. Present investigations suggest that intranasal curcumin (5.0 mg/kg, i.n.) has effectively being absorbed and detected in plasma and lungs both and suppressed airway inflammations at lower doses than the earlier doses used for detection (100–200 mg/kg, i.p.) for pharmacological studies (10–20 mg/kg, i.p.) in mouse model of asthma. Present study may prove the possibility of curcumin as complementary medication in the development of nasal drops to prevent airway inflammations and bronchoconstrictions in asthma without any side effect
