Atomic-scale grain boundary engineering to overcome hot-cracking in additively-manufactured superalloys
There are still debates regarding the mechanisms that lead to hot cracking in
parts build by additive manufacturing (AM) of non-weldable Ni-based
superalloys. This lack of in-depth understanding of the root causes of hot
cracking is an impediment to designing engineering parts for safety-critical
applications. Here, we deploy a near-atomic-scale approach to investigate the
details of the compositional decoration of grain boundaries in the
coarse-grained, columnar microstructure in parts built from a non-weldable
Ni-based superalloy by selective electron-beam melting. The progressive
enrichment in Cr, Mo and B at grain boundaries over the course of the
AM-typical successive solidification and remelting events, accompanied by
solid-state diffusion, causes grain boundary segregation induced liquation.
This observation is consistent with thermodynamic calculations. We demonstrate
that by adjusting build parameters to obtain a fine-grained equiaxed or a
columnar microstructure with grain width smaller than 100 m enables to
avoid cracking, despite strong grain boundary segregation. We find that the
spread of critical solutes to a higher total interfacial area, combined with
lower thermal stresses, helps to suppress interfacial liquation.Comment: Accepted version at Acta Materiali
By examining the diversity of exile experienced and invested by members of the Carlist dynasty, this paper explores the limits of exile and emphasizes its reflective dimension. Addressing the power relations, partly gender shaped, that are internal to the family unit, it shows how the carlists struggle to manage exile constraints. The article highlights the different ways in which women are politicized within the family unit and the essential functions that they perform, both actively and passively, to safeguard Carlism
Producing Ni-base superalloys single crystal by selective electron beam melting
International audienceThe possibility to produce Ni-base superalloy single crystals by selective electron beam melting (S-EBM) is demonstrated. The production of single crystals specimens was achieved by a tight control of the processing conditions without requiring a grain selector or a crystal seed. The melting parameters are controlled so as to promote columnar grains and intensify the competitive grain growth
Specific joint angle dependency of voluntary activation during eccentric knee extensions
International audienceIntroduction: This study compared voluntary activation during isometric, concentric, and eccentric maximal knee extensions at different joint angles. Methods: Fifteen participants performed isometric, concentric, and eccentric protocols (9 contractions each). For each protocol, the central activation ratio (CAR) was randomly measured at 50°, 75°, or 100° of knee joint angle (0° = full knee extension) using superimposed supramaximal paired nerve stimulations during contractions. Results: CAR increased between 50° and 100° during isometric (93.6 ± 3.1 vs. 98.5 ± 1.4%), concentric (92.4 ± 5.4 vs. 99.2 ± 1.2%), and eccentric (93.0 ± 3.5 vs. 96.6 ± 3.8%) contractions. CAR was lower during eccentric than both isometric and concentric contractions at 75° and 100°, but similar between contraction types at 50°.Conclusions: The ability to activate muscle maximally is impaired during eccentric contractions compared with other contraction types at 75° and 100°, but not at 50°.
