    Peak effect in CeRu2_2:history dependence and supercooling

    We present experimental results on single crystal CeRu2_2 showing that the extent of history dependence of peak-effect depends on the path followed in the space of field (H) and temperature (T). The (H,T) regime over which history effect is observed is larger if the vortex lattice is prepared by lowering T from above TC_C in constant H i.e. by field cooling. We compare this history effect with the very recently reported history dependence of peak-effect in detwinned single crystals of YBaCuO, highlighting the similarities and differences. We discuss the possibility of a first order vortex solid-solid transition in CeRu2_2 within the realm of recent theoretical developments in the field of vortex matter.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures; submitted to Phys.     Evaluation of role of computed tomography scan brain in children with generalized seizures

    Objective: To evaluate the role of computed tomography (CT) scan brain in children over the age of 1 year with generalized seizures.Design: Prospective, hospital-based study. Materials and Methods: Children of 1-12 years presenting with generalized seizuresin pediatric outpatient department and emergencies were subjected for CT scan brain with contrast along with other appropriateinvestigations after stabilization. Results: A total of 101 cases of children with generalized seizures underwent CT scan brain, 36 cases(35.64%) were found to have CT brain abnormalities. Conclusion: CT brain should be considered in children with generalized seizuresin health care settings where magnetic resonance imaging is either unavailable or unaffordable

    Agro-morphological Diversity of High Altitude Bean Landraces in the Kailash Sacred Landscape of Nepal

    Many varieties of bean are widely grown across diverse agro-ecological zones in Nepal. And opportunities exist for improving the crops and enhancing their resilience to various biotic and abiotic stressors. In this context, an experiment was conducted from June to October 2016 in Khar VDC of Darchula district to study the phenotypic traits of nine landraces of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The bean landraces were planted using randomized complete block design in three sites (Dhamidera, Dallekh and Sundamunda villages), with three replications in each site for their comparative analysis. The study considered the following phenotypic traits: days to emergence, days to 50% flowering, days to 90% pod maturity, number of nodes, pod length, pod width, number of pods, number of seeds per pod and weight and grain yield for 100 seeds. Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant differences in the landraces both within and among locations. KA-17-08-FB and KA-17-04-FB were late  flowering (63 and 65 days respectively) compared to other landraces whereas KA-17-07-FB flowered earliest (within 42 days). In all three sites, three landraces namely KA-17-07-FB, KA-17-04-FB and KA-17-06-FB were found to be relatively more resistant to pest and diseases than other landraces. Eight out of nine landraces in Dhamidera and Dallekh villages and seven out of nine in Sundamunda village produced seeds greater than 1.0 t/ha. Among the nine varieties KA-17-02-FB was the highest yielding variety, with an average yield of 3.8 t/ha. This study is useful for identifying suitable landraces for future promotion based on their maturity, grain yield, diseases resistance and other qualitative and quantitative characteristics

    Buying Practices and Prevalence of Adulteration in Selected Food items in a Rural Area of Wardha District: A Cross - Sectional Study

    Introduction: Food adulteration in India includes both willful adulteration and substandard food which do not confirm to prescribe food standard. There is striking paucity of reliable data with regard to extent of adulteration and documentation of food borne illnesses reflecting lack of attention and focus on this problem. Objectives: To find the prevalence of food adulteration, buying practices of selected food items and their awareness towards food adulteration act. Also assess relationship between per-capita incomes, education of respondents, and food borne illnesses with magnitude of adulteration in each house-hold. Methods: With the best estimate of 50%, sample size comes to 89. By stratifying the village according to social strata and randomly selecting the households with PPS. Questionnaire was administered to fulfill our objectives and food items were tested. Data analyzed by numeral with percentage, Pearson moment correlation, F test and chi square test. Results: In 68.5% Households, wife (home-maker) buys the grocery. Majority of them never read the food labels. All the selected food items were adulterated ranging from 76 % to 11%. Mean percentage of purity was highest in literates (47.5 ± 22.48) than illiterates and just literates. Food borne illness was prevalent in households with low purity of food. Association was found between per capita income and percentage of purity (0.765)

The durability of concrete structure exposed to corrosive environment has not been to our expectation. Hence the need of hour is to investigate the corrosion affected concrete structures with great care and systematically. The results obtained from the various test methods should be interpreted with adequate caution so that the data can be made more mean-ingful. In this paper the author has made an attempt to present a systematic approach of investigation of corr-osion afrected concrete structures highlighting guide-lines for interpretation.     Inhibitors of SecA as Potential Antimicrobial Agents

    Protein translocation is essential for bacterial survival and the most important translocation mechanism in bacteria is the secretion (Sec) pathway. Thus targeting Sec pathway is a promising strategy for developing novel antibacterial therapeutics. We report the design, syntheses, mechanistic studies and structure-activity relationship studies using HQSAR and 3-D QSAR Topomer CoMFA analyses of 4-oxo-5-cyano thiouracil derivatives. In summary, introduction of polar group such as –N3 and linker groups such as –CH2-O- enhanced the potency as well as logP and logS several fold. We also report the discovery, optimization and structure-activity relationship study of 1,2,4-triazole containing pyrimidines as novel, highly potent antimicrobial agents. A number of inhibitors have been found to inhibit microbial growth at high nanomolar concentrations
