    Mariner 1969 Infrared Radiometer Results: Temperatures and Thermal Properties of the Martian Surface

    The reduced data of the Mariner 6 and 7 Infrared Radiometer Experiments are presented, along with a discussion of the reduction and calibration procedures. Evidence is presented showing that the surface of Mars is strongly nonhomogeneous in its thermal properties, on scales ranging from those of the classical light and dark areas to the limit of resolution of the radiometers. On the sunlit side, the mean thermal inertia, for admissible bolometric albedos, is 0.006 (cal cm^(-2) sec^(-1/2) °K^(-1)). The dark areas Syrtis Major and Mare Tyrrhenum, observed at night, require thermal inertias as high as 0.010. The temperatures measured over the circular basin Hellas require a bolometric albedo of 0.40 and also a high thermal inertia. The temperature measured over the south polar cap, 148° K, provides evidence that the major constituent of the frost deposit is CO_2

    Preliminary 10- and 20-μm brightness temperatures of Mars are presented. More than 35% of the Martian surface was observed with a resolution better than 100 km. On the whole, the results confirm the thermal properties derived from the Mariner 6 and 7 radiometers, although the temperatures, on the average, were cooler and shifted with respect to the Martian day during the dust storm. Thermal inertias and radiometric albedos were derived for many areas; no clear correlation exists between these properties. Thermal structure again was found at the spatial limit of the radiometer; no cases were found in which it was necessary to invoke internal heat sources

    Effect of Storage Time and Temperature on Recovery of \u3ci\u3eSynergistes jonesii\u3c/i\u3e from Rumen Fluid and Feces

    Synergistes jonesii is a rumen bacterium that degrades 3,4-dihydroxypyridine (3,4 DHP), the toxic breakdown product of mimosine in leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala). Fecal culture is the most practical way to determine S. jonesii presence in zoological ruminants, particularly if feces can be collected from night penning facilities. Fresh rumen fluid and fecal or fecal slurry (sheep [Ovis spp.] only, 1:4 wt to vol. feces and culture media) from cattle (Bos spp.) and sheep, known to be colonized by S. jonesii, were subjected various storage times (0, 6, 12, and 24 h) and temperatures (5, 23, and 38 oC). Samples were inoculated into a culture medium that contained 3,4 DHP. In general, storage temperature had no affect on detection frequency. Regardless of animal species, detection of S. jonesii was higher (P=0.001) in rumen (97%) than in fecal (40%) samples and level of detection in rumen samples was relatively unaffected by storage time. Detection frequency was similar for both fecal sample types regardless of time (34% fecal vs. 29% fecal slurry). For all fecal samples, detection frequency generally exhibited a linear decline (P=0.01) with time. This study showed that it will be important to collect fresh fecal samples (\u3c 6-h old) from night penning facilities, and because detection levels were low in fecal material, fecal assay would be most accurate on a whole herd rather than an individual animal basis

    Dynamics of monatomic liquids

    We present a theory of the dynamics of monatomic liquids built on two basic ideas: (1) The potential surface of the liquid contains three classes of intersecting nearly-harmonic valleys, one of which (the ``random'' class) vastly outnumbers the others and all whose members have the same depth and normal mode spectrum; and (2) the motion of particles in the liquid can be decomposed into oscillations in a single many-body valley, and nearly instantaneous inter-valley transitions called transits. We review the thermodynamic data which led to the theory, and we discuss the results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of sodium and Lennard-Jones argon which support the theory in more detail. Then we apply the theory to problems in equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, and we compare the results to experimental data and MD simulations. We also discuss our work in comparison with the QNM and INM research programs and suggest directions for future research.Comment: 53 pages, 16 figures.     Our objective has been to compare the IVF and in vitro production (IVP) of embryos from low and high antral follicle count (AFC) heifers. This is the fourth year of the study with years 1 to 3 reported individually. For this report, we add data for the fourth year and present a combined analysis (years 1 to 4) for the first time. Each year, AFC was determined on ~120 Angus heifers using transrectal ultrasonography. Ten heifers with the lowest AFC and 10 heifers with the highest AFC and all with evidence of oestrous cyclicity were synchronized with two 5-mL injections of PGF2α 11 days apart. Half were harvested on Day 5 to 6 and half on Day 15 to 16 of the oestrous cycle. The IVF procedure was slightly modified each year. For year 4, the IVF procedure included protocols for semi-defined media and was as described (IVP Protocol, P. J. Hansen’s Laboratory, University of Florida). Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COC) from follicles less than 8 mm in diameter were cultured in maturation medium (5% CO2; 38.5°C) for 24 h

    What you know can influence what you are going to know (especially for older adults)

    Stimuli related to an individual's knowledge/experience are often more memorable than abstract stimuli, particularly for older adults. This has been found when material that is congruent with knowledge is contrasted with material that is incongruent with knowledge, but there is little research on a possible graded effect of congruency. The present study manipulated the degree of congruency of study material with participants’ knowledge. Young and older participants associated two famous names to nonfamous faces, where the similarity between the nonfamous faces and the real famous individuals varied. These associations were incrementally easier to remember as the name-face combinations became more congruent with prior knowledge, demonstrating a graded congruency effect, as opposed to an effect based simply on the presence or absence of associations to prior knowledge. Older adults tended to show greater susceptibility to the effect than young adults, with a significant age difference for extreme stimuli, in line with previous literature showing that schematic support in memory tasks particularly benefits older adults
