The French Aging Males' Symptoms (AMS) scale: Methodological review

BACKGROUND: The AMS is an internationally used health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scale. The aim of this paper is to provide evidence that the French AMS scale measures HRQoL are as valid as other language versions. We also intend to show whether the application of AMS is really limited to aging males only or not. More generally, we like to demonstrate that the AMS scale is a relevant, validated, sensitive instrument to measure HRQoL and change of symptoms in France. METHODS: We performed a representative survey in France to get data AMS scale data. The French data were compared with existing data from other European countries. Only community-based data were used for this comparison. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Reliability (here consistency, Cronbach' s alpha) was found to be good and almost identical with other countries. Validity: the internal structure of the AMS (factorial analysis) was sufficiently comparable with the comparison group of other countries in Europe to conclude that the scale really measures the same phenomenon. The sub-scores and total score correlations (Pearson) were high (r = 0.8–0.9) but only somewhat lower among the sub-scales (r = 0.5–0.7). This suggests that the domains are correlated. The comparison of the French AMS with the generic quality-of-life scale SF-12 showed a good correlation (Pearson r = 0.48 – 0.51) as reported from other countries. We observed also a good correlation between the AMS scale and the depression scale HAD (Pearson r = 0.62). The analysis of the AMS structure across age groups showed sufficient similarity to suggest that the AMS is also useful for younger age groups. CONCLUSION: The French AMS scale is a standardized HRQoL scale with good psychometric characteristics (reliability, validity) as shown for other international versions. We suggest that the AMS scale could be also used in age groups under 40 years to measure and compare HRQoL in males. Since the application of the AMS in younger age was not investigated before, confirmation in future studies is needed

Evaluation in real life of the impact of photo-protection counseling in patients with actinic keratosis

Actinic keratosis (AK) are scaly lesions caused by chronic ultraviolet-induced damage to the epidermis which are a proxy for excessive sun-exposure [1] that may evolve into squamous cell carcinoma [2-7]. Therefore, there is a need or continuous surveillance of such patients along with adapted information for an effective photo-protection, practical couselling on photoprotection towards the defined population, i.e. elderly with actinic keratosis. Thus, patient observance and adhesion to the dermatologist recommendations become a real public health issue. In this context, we aimed to evaluate through a non-interventional, real-life observational study, the impact of photoprotection counseling by the dermatologist on patients attitude towards sun exposur

    Laser-assisted (e, 2 e) collisions in helium

The influence of a strong laser field on the dynamics of fast (e, 2 e) collisions in helium is analyzed in the asymmetric, coplanar geometry. The interaction of the laser field with the incident, scattered and ejected electrons is treated in a non-perturbative way, while the remaining interactions are treated by using first order perturbation theory. Detailed calculations are performed for an incident electron energy Eki=600 eV, an ejected electron energy EkB=5 eV and a scattering angle θA=4°. The influence of the laser parameters (photon energy, intensity and direction of polarization) on the angular distribution of the ejected electron is analyzed. We find that in general the triple differential cross sections are strongly dependent on the dressing of the projectile and the target by the laser field. © 1992 Springer-Verlag.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

International audienceBACKGROUND: Ichthyoses are a heterogeneous group of rare genodermatoses. Patients and their families face difficulties related to daily care and management that may be aggravated by social isolation.ObjectivesTo evaluate the impact of therapeutic educational programs in improving the knowledge of ichthyosis patients, and their relatives, about their disease.Patients and methods: We organized a two sessions-program of "know-how" dedicated to the overall management of ichthyoses. These sessions were conducted based on a tool specifically designed for the study, which addressed our various areas of expertise through a collective game. The participants (patients and their parents and siblings) were divided into groups, and the questions were tailored according to the participants' age. The program was conceived as a knowledge reinforcement program that took place during a weekend of education and rest, organized away from healthcare structures. Our aim was to facilitate the program in a neutral place to encourage respite care and to ensure the availability of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. RESULTS: After the reinforcement session, children aged from 6 to 12 years and their families acquired the targeted know-how and social skills. CONCLUSION: Benefits of TPE in the management of ichthyoses are the following: (1) the trust between patients their families and the caregivers was strengthened; (2) the context of the program encouraged self-expression, answered questions and provided mutual aid; and (3) the more self-sufficient families could better manage emergencies
