The Submillimeter Polarization Spectrum of M17
We present 450 {\mu}m polarimetric observations of the M17 molecular cloud
obtained with the SHARP polarimeter at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory.
Across the observed region, the magnetic field orientation is consistent with
previous submillimeter and far-infrared polarization measurements. Our
observations are centered on a region of the molecular cloud that has been
compressed by stellar winds from a cluster of OB stars. We have compared these
new data with previous 350 {\mu}m polarimetry and find an anti-correlation
between the 450 to 350 {\mu}m polarization magnitude ratio and the ratio of 21
cm to 450 {\mu}m intensity. The polarization ratio is lower near the east end
of the studied region where the cloud is exposed to stellar winds and
radiation. At the west end of the region, the polarization ratio is higher. We
interpret the varying polarization spectrum as evidence supporting the
radiative alignment torque (RAT) model for grain alignment, implying higher
alignment efficiency in the region that is exposed to a higher anisotropic

String Bit Models for Superstring
We extend the model of string as a polymer of string bits to the case of
superstring. We mainly concentrate on type II-B superstring, with some
discussion of the obstacles presented by not II-B superstring, together with
possible strategies for surmounting them. As with previous work on bosonic
string we work within the light-cone gauge. The bit model possesses a good deal
less symmetry than the continuous string theory. For one thing, the bit model
is formulated as a Galilei invariant theory in dimensional
space-time. This means that Poincar\'e invariance is reduced to the Galilei
subgroup in space dimensions. Naturally the supersymmetry present in the
bit model is likewise dramatically reduced. Continuous string can arise in the
bit models with the formation of infinitely long polymers of string bits. Under
the right circumstances (at the critical dimension) these polymers can behave
as string moving in dimensional space-time enjoying the full

Calculating the Rest Tension for a Polymer of String Bits
We explore the application of approximation schemes from many body physics,
including the Hartree-Fock method and random phase approximation (RPA), to the
problem of analyzing the low energy excitations of a polymer chain made up of
bosonic string bits. We accordingly obtain an expression for the rest tension
of the bosonic relativistic string in terms of the parameters
characterizing the microscopic string bit dynamics. We first derive an exact
connection between the string tension and a certain correlation function of the
many-body string bit system. This connection is made for an arbitrary
interaction potential between string bits and relies on an exact dipole sum
rule. We then review an earlier calculation by Goldstone of the low energy
excitations of a polymer chain using RPA. We assess the accuracy of the RPA by
calculating the first order corrections. For this purpose we specialize to the
unique scale invariant potential, namely an attractive delta function potential
in two (transverse) dimensions. We find that the corrections are large, and
discuss a method for summing the large terms. The corrections to this improved

Quantum Newtonian Dynamics on a Light Front
We recall the special features of quantum dynamics on a light-front (in an
infinite momentum frame) in string and field theory. The reason this approach
is more effective for string than for fields is stressed: the light-front
dynamics for string is that of a true Newtonian many particle system, since a
string bit has a fixed Newtonian mass. In contrast, each particle of a field
theory has a variable Newtonian mass P^+, so the Newtonian analogy actually
requires an infinite number of species of elementary Newtonian particles. This
complication substantially weakens the value of the Newtonian analogy in
applying light-front dynamics to nonperturbative problems. Motivated by the
fact that conventional field theories can be obtained as infinite tension
limits of string theories, we propose a way to recast field theory as a
standard Newtonian system. We devise and analyze some simple quantum mechanical
systems that display the essence of the proposal, and we discuss prospects for

THE MAGNETIC FIELD MORPHOLOGY OF THE CLASS 0 PROTOSTAR L1157-mm
We present the first detection of polarization around the Class 0 low-mass protostar L1157-mm at two different wavelengths. We show polarimetric maps at large scales (10 '' resolution at 350 mu m) from the SHARC-II Polarimeter and at smaller scales (1.'' 2-4.'' 5 at 1.3 mm) from the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA). The observations are consistent with each other and show inferred magnetic field lines aligned with the outflow. The CARMA observations suggest a full hourglass magnetic field morphology centered about the core; this is only the second well-defined hourglass detected around a low-mass protostar to date. We apply two different methods to CARMA polarimetric observations to estimate the plane-of-sky magnetic field magnitude, finding values of 1.4 and 3.4 mG.</p
The Consolidation of the White Southern Congressional Vote
This article explores the initial desertion and continued realignment of about one-sixth of the white voters in the South who, until 1994, stood by Democratic congressional candidates even as they voted for Republican presidential nominees. Prior to 1994, a sizable share of the white electorate distinguished between Democratic congressional and presidential candidates; since 1994 that distinction has been swept away. In 1992, a majority of white southern voters was casting their ballot for the Democratic House nominee; by 1994, the situation was reversed and 64 percent cast their ballot for the Republican. Virtually all categories of voters increased their support of Republican congressional candidates in 1994 and the following elections further cement GOP congressional support in the South. Subsequent elections are largely exercises in partisanship, as the congressional votes mirror party preferences. Republicans pull nearly all GOP identifiers, most independents, and a sizeable minority of Democratic identifiers. Democrats running for Congress no longer convince voters that they are different from their partyâs presidential standard bearersâa group that has consistently been judged unacceptable to overwhelming proportions of the southern white electorate.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
Regional block versus general anaesthesia for caesarean section and neonatal outcomes: a population-based study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Anaesthesia guidelines recommend regional anaesthesia for most caesarean sections due to the risk of failed intubation and aspiration with general anaesthesia. However, general anaesthesia is considered to be safe for the foetus, based on limited evidence, and is still used for caesarean sections.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Cohorts of caesarean sections by indication (that is, planned repeat caesarean section, failure to progress, foetal distress) were selected from the period 1998 to 2004 (<it>N </it>= 50,806). Deliveries performed under general anaesthesia were compared with those performed under spinal or epidural, for the outcomes of neonatal intubation and 5-minute Apgar (Apgar5) <7.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The risk of adverse outcomes was increased for caesarean sections under general anaesthesia for all three indications and across all levels of hospital. The relative risks were largest for low-risk planned repeat caesarean deliveries: resuscitation with intubation relative risk was 12.8 (95% confidence interval 7.6, 21.7), and Apgar5 <7 relative risk was 13.4 (95% confidence interval 9.2, 19.4). The largest absolute increase in risk was for unplanned caesareans due to foetal distress: there were five extra intubations per 100 deliveries and six extra Apgar5 <7 per 100 deliveries.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The infants most affected by general anaesthesia were those already compromised <it>in utero</it>, as evidenced by foetal distress. The increased rate of adverse neonatal outcomes should be weighed up when general anaesthesia is under consideration.</p
