The Principles of Exchange Rate Determination in an International Finance Experiment

    Get PDF
This paper reports the first experiments designed to explore the behavior of economies with prominent features of international finance. Two “countries,” each with its own currency, were created. International trade could take place only through the operation of markets for currency. The law of one price and the flow of funds theory of exchange rate determination were used to produce general equilibrium models that captured much of the behavior of the economies. Prices of goods, as well as the exchange rate, evolve over time toward the predictions of the models. However, both the law of one price and purchasing power parity can be rejected for reasons that do not appear in the literature. Patterns of international trade were as predicted by the law of comparative advantage

Use of rigorous vector coupled-wave theory for designing and tolerancing surface-relief diffractive components for magneto-optical heads

A rigorous coupled wave model is presented, experimentally validated, and used for tolerancing surface relief diffractive elements. Applications of the model in the design and tolerancing of components for magneto optical (M-O) data storage heads are investigated

The Supreme Court’s commerce clause jurisprudence represents a balance between ideology and institutional constraints. In this work, I examine to what extent ideology and institutional constraints affect the Court’s jurisprudence. As these cases often feature conflict between the states and the federal government, these cases also have important implications for federalism. This work unifies legal and social science scholarship by integrating both fields into one consistent model. Using an original dataset of all Supreme Court commerce clause cases from 1939-2012, I demonstrate that both ideology and precedent matter, suggesting that both fields are important components of an overarching theory of the Court

A study of the structure of silicic acid gels

    Get PDF
The general purpose of this investigation was an inquiry into the structure and process of setting of Silicic acid gels. The particular object of the work was to obtain quantitative results determining whether or not the structure of the acid radical or silicate radical in the sodium silicate could be changed by allowing the sodium silicate to react with sodium hydroxide, and if so whether or not such a change in structure would effect the time of set if gel. This investigation was carried out in collaboration with other work being done at Union College on several analyzed sodium Silicates manufactured by the Philadelphia Quartz Company. Parts of the data collected in the work in these silicates will necessarily be included in this thesis as a means of comparison. All data are confined entirely to acid gels made by mixing acetic acid and sodium silicate

The influence of response mode on learning from a programmed text

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was (1) to compare the test scores of sub-groups within the experimental group who responded to the frames in the programmed text, English 2600, by writing,· speaking or thinking; (2) to compare the scores of the experimental group with those of the population from which the sample was drawn on the final test from the English 2600 text; and (3) to compare the scores of the experimental group with those of the population . from which the s ample was drawn on the Cooperative English Test Form 2c. Approximately two weeks prior to the end of the experiment, permission was given by the administration of Stockton College to administer the final test of the English 2600 programmed text to the population. The instructors appeared to cooperate because they wished to compare the programmed method to their own instructional method
