Halo gas cross sections and covering fractions of MgII absorption selected galaxies
We examine halo gas cross sections and covering fractions, fc, of intermediate-redshift Mg II absorption selected galaxies. We computed statistical absorber halo radii, Rx, using current values of dN/dz and Schechter luminosity function parameters, and have compared these values to the distribution of impact parameters and luminosities from a sample of 37 galaxies. For equivalent widths Wr(2796) ≥ 0.3 Å, we find 43 ≤ Rx ≤ 88 kpc, depending on the lower luminosity cutoff and the slope, β, of the Holmberg-like luminosity scaling, R ∝ α L^β . The observed distribution of impact parameters, D, are such that several absorbing galaxies lie at D > Rx and several non-absorbing galaxies lie at D ~ 0.5 for our sample. Moreover, the data suggest that halo radii of Mg II absorbing galaxies do not follow a luminosity scaling with β in the range of 0.2–0.28, if fc = 1 as previously reported. However, provided fc ~ 0.5, we find that halo radii can remain consistent with a Holmberg-like luminosity relation with β ≃ 0.2 and R∗ = Rx/√(fc) ~ 110 kpc. No luminosity scaling (β = 0) is also consistent with the observed distribution of impact parameters if fc ≤ 0.37. The data support a scenario in which gaseous halos are patchy and likely have non-symmetric geometric distributions about the galaxies. We suggest that halo gas distributions may not be governed primarily by galaxy mass/luminosity but also by stochastic processes local to the galaxy
Galaxy Morphology - Halo Gas Connections
We studied a sample of 38 intermediate redshift MgII absorption-selected
galaxies using (1) Keck/HIRES and VLT/UVES quasar spectra to measure the halo
gas kinematics from MgII absorption profiles and (2) HST/WFPC-2 images to study
the absorbing galaxy morphologies. We have searched for correlations between
quantified gas absorption properties, and host galaxy impact parameters,
inclinations, position angles, and quantified morphological parameters. We
report a 3.2-sigma correlation between asymmetric perturbations in the host
galaxy morphology and the MgII absorption equivalent width. We suggest that
this correlation may indicate a connection between past merging and/or
interaction events in MgII absorption-selected galaxies and the velocity

H-alpha Imaging with HST+NICMOS of An Elusive Damped Ly-alpha Cloud at z=0.6
Despite previous intensive ground-based imaging and spectroscopic campaigns
and wide-band HST imaging of the z=0.927 QSO 3C336 field, the galaxy that hosts
the damped Ly-alpha system along this line-of-sight has eluded detection. We
present a deep narrow-band H-alpha image of the field of this z=0.656 damped
Ly-alpha absorber, obtained through the F108N filter of NICMOS 1 onboard the
Hubble Space Telescope. The goal of this project was to detect any H-alpha
emission 10 times closer than previous studies to unveil the damped absorber.
We do not detect H-alpha emission between 0.05'' and 6'' (0.24 and 30
kpc) from the QSO, with a 3-sigma flux limit of
erg/s/cm^2 for an unresolved source, corresponding to a star formation rate
(SFR) of M_sun/yr. This leads to a 3-sigma upper limit of 0.15
M_sun/yr/kpc^2 on the SFR density, or a maximum SFR of 1.87 M_sun/yr assuming a
disk of 4 kpc in diameter. This result adds to the number of low redshift
damped Ly-alpha absorbers that are not associated with the central regions of
Milky-Way-like disks. Damped Ly-alpha absorption can arise from high density
concentrations in a variety of galactic environments including some that,
despite their high local HI densities, are not conducive to widespread star

The Identification of Extreme Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars and Red Supergiants in M33 by 24 {\mu}m Variability
We present the first detection of 24 {\mu}m variability in 24 sources in the
Local Group galaxy M33. These results are based on 4 epochs of MIPS
observations, which are irregularly spaced over ~750 days. We find that these
sources are constrained exclusively to the Holmberg radius of the galaxy, which
increases their chances of being members of M33. We have constructed spectral
energy distributions (SEDs) ranging from the optical to the sub-mm to
investigate the nature of these objects. We find that 23 of our objects are
most likely heavily self-obscured, evolved stars; while the remaining source is
the Giant HII region, NGC 604. We believe that the observed variability is the
intrinsic variability of the central star reprocessed through their
circumstellar dust shells. Radiative transfer modeling was carried out to
determine their likely chemical composition, luminosity, and dust production
rate (DPR). As a sample, our modeling has determined an average luminosity of
(3.8 0.9) x 10 L and a total DPR of (2.3 0.1) x
10 M yr. Most of the sources, given the high DPRs and
short wavelength obscuration, are likely "extreme" AGB (XAGB) stars. Five of
the sources are found to have luminosities above the classical AGB limit
(M 54,000 L), which classifies them as probably
red supergiants (RSGs). Almost all of the sources are classified as oxygen
rich. As also seen in the LMC, a significant fraction of the dust in M33 is

Usability evaluation of a research repository and collaboration website
This article reports results from an empirical usability evaluation of Human-Animal Bond Research Initiative Central as part of the effort to develop an open access research repository and collaboration platform for human-animal bond researchers. By repurposing and altering key features of the original HUBzero system, Human-Animal Bond Research Initiative Central hosts previously published materials from related disciplines and an extensive bibliography, in addition to traditional hub materials such as tools and datasets. Seven graduate students in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University participated in the usability evaluation. Tasks included exploring the system, finding an article in the repository, submitting an article to the repository, adding bibliographic information of an article to the repository, and using interaction features such as user groups. Participants also answered open questions regarding their overall experience and rated Human-Animal Bond Research Initiative Central\u27s usability using the System Usability Scale. Response measures included task successfulness, navigational steps, task time, participant comments, and behavior notes recorded by the researcher. Results of the evaluation showed that the overall user experience of Human-Animal Bond Research Initiative Central was satisfactory but also indicated a number of usability issues. Participants had difficulty inputting metadata such as resource type and author information when submitting an article to the repository. There were also interface design issues regarding layout and consistency. It is expected that findings from this study and the evaluation methodology can be extended to the development and evaluation of similar research repository systems
Overlapping functionality of the Pht proteins in zinc homeostasis of streptococcus pneumoniae
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a globally significant pathogen that causes a range of diseases, including pneumonia, sepsis, meningitis, and otitis media. Its ability to cause disease depends upon the acquisition of nutrients from its environment, including transition metal ions such as zinc. The pneumococcus employs a number of surface proteins to achieve this, among which are four highly similar polyhistidine triad (Pht) proteins. It has previously been established that these proteins collectively aid in the delivery of zinc to the ABC transporter substrate-binding protein AdcAII. Here we have investigated the contribution of each individual Pht protein to pneumococcal zinc homeostasis by analyzing mutant strains expressing only one of the four pht genes. Under conditions of low zinc availability, each of these mutants showed superior growth and zinc accumulation profiles relative to a mutant strain lacking all four genes, indicating that any of the four Pht proteins are able to facilitate delivery of zinc to AdcAII. However, optimal growth and zinc accumulation in vitro and pneumococcal survival and proliferation in vivo required production of all four Pht proteins, indicating that, despite their overlapping functionality, the proteins are not dispensable without incurring a fitness cost. We also show that surface-attached forms of the Pht proteins are required for zinc recruitment and that they do not contribute to defense against extracellular zinc stress
Consecutive Case Series of Melanoma Sentinel Node Biopsy for Lymphoseek Compared to Sulfur Colloids
Introduction: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is an important adjunct in the staging of patients with melanoma. Preoperative lymphoscintigraphy (LS) with radiolabeled isotopes is essential to localize sentinel nodes for removal. Our study compared the effectiveness of Lymphoseek to standard sulfur colloids (SC) in patients with melanoma undergoing SLNB.
Methods: We queried our IRB-approved melanoma database to identify 370 consecutive patients who underwent SLNB from 2012-2016 with at least one year of follow up. There were 185 patients in each group. Data points included characteristics of the primary melanoma lymphoscintigraphy, and SLNB. Student’s t-test and Chi-Square were used to analyze the data with a p-value of \u3c0.05 being considered significant.
Results: Patients were equally matched in regard to age, sex, and primary characteristics of their melanoma. In comparison to SC, Lymphoseek required lower radiation dosages (p\u3c0.001), shorter mapping times (p=0.008), and decreased number of sentinel nodes removed (p=0.03). There was no difference in the number of patients with positive nodes (p=0.5). Additionally, there were no statistical differences between the two radioactive tracers in regard to the number of patients with false negative SLNB.
Conclusion: Lymphoseek has the potential to decrease radioactivity and mapping time in patients who need SLNB. With a decrease in the number of nodes removed without loss of sensitivity, there is a potential to avoid unnecessary node removal and thus complications such as lymphedema. Longer follow-up will help to determine if there is any increase in false negative rates despite fewer nodes removed
