Polarization and Extent of Maser Emission from Late-Type Stars: Support for a Plasma Turbulence Model of Maser Production
The integrated spectrum of OH emission from late-type stars is often
circularly polarized, by as much as 50% in some cases. While the spectra are
partially polarized, the individual maser components revealed by VLBI are much
more so. Using VLBI observations of late-type stars from the literature, we
show that the difference in circular polarization between main lines correlates
with a difference in angular extent for a given object. This is a natural
result if turbulent magnetic fields are causing the masers to be polarized via
the Cook mechanism, and might serve as a good diagnostic for determining which
objects should be investigated in the search for magnetic fields around evolved

Real-time detection of individual atoms falling through a high-finesse optical cavity
The enhanced coupling between atoms and photons inside a high-finesse optical cavity provides a novel basis for optical measurements that continuously monitor atomic degrees of freedom. We describe an experiment in which cavity quantum-electrodynamic effects are utilized for real-time detection of individual atoms falling through an optical cavity after being dropped from a magneto-optical trap. Our technique permits experiments that are triggered by the presence of a single optimally coupled atom within the cavity mode volume
A low-power photovoltaic system with energy storage for radio communications: Description and design methodology
A low power photovoltaic system was constructed with approximately 500 amp hours of battery energy storage to provide power to an emergency amateur radio communications center. The system can power the communications center for about 72 hours of continuous nonsun operation. Complete construction details and a design methodology algorithm are given with abundant engineering data and adequate theory to allow similar systems to be constructed, scaled up or down, with minimum design effort
Ground test experience with large composite structures for commercial transports
The initial ground test of each component resulted in structural failure at less than ultimate design loads. While such failures represent major program delays, the investigation and analysis of each failure revealed significant lessons for effective utilization of composites in primary structure. Foremost among these are secondary loads that produce through-the-thickness forces which may lead to serious weaknesses in an otherwise sound structural design. The sources, magnitude, and effects of secondary loads need to be thoroughly understood and accounted for by the designers of composite primary aircraft structures
Circadian rhythm of leaf movement in Capsicum annuum observed during centrifugation
Plant circadian rhythms of leaf movement in seedlings of the pepper plant (Capsicum annuum L., var. Yolo Wonder) were observed at different g-levels by means of a centrifuge. Except for the chronically imposed g-force all environmental conditions to which the plants were exposed were held constant. The circadian period, rate of change of amplitude of successive oscillations, symmetry of the cycles, and phase of the rhythm all were found not to be significantly correlated with the magnitude of the sustained g-force
Limitation on the use of the horizontal clinostat as a gravity compensator
If the horizontal clinostat effectively compensates for the influence of the gravity vector on the rotating plant, it makes the plant unresponsive to whatever chronic acceleration may be applied transverse to the axis of clinostat rotation. This was tested by centrifuging plants while they were growing on clinostats. For a number of morphological endpoints of development, the results depended on the magnitude of the applied g-force. Gravity compensation by the clinostat was incomplete, and this conclusion is in agreement with results of satellite experiments which are reviewed
Effects of vertical rotation on Arabidopsis development
Various gross morphological end points of Arabidopsis development are examined in an attempt to separate the effects of growth on the horizontal clinostat into a component caused by rotation alone and another component caused by the altered position with respect to the direction of the g-vector. In a series of tests which involved comparisons between vertical stationary plants, vertical rotated plants, and plants rotated on clinostats, certain characters were consistently influenced by vertical rotation alone. The characters for which this effect was statistically significant were petiole length and leaf blade width
Effects of increased G-force on the nutations of sunflower seedlings
A centrifuge was used to provide chronic acceleration in order to study the nutation of six-day old sunflower hypocotyls at 1 to 20 times normal gravity (g). At the upper end of the g-range nutational movement was impeded and at times erratic evidently because the weight of the cotyledons exceeded the supportive abilities of the hypocotyls. Over the range from 1 to 9 g the period of nutation was independent of the resultant g-force. That finding is interpreted as evidence that the geotropic response time -- i.e., the time needed for growth hormone transport from the region of g-sensing to the region of bending response --was not influenced significantly by substantial increments of the g-level, since geotropic response time is related to the period of nutation
Strong Quantum Spin Correlations Observed in Atomic Spin Mixing
We have observed sub-Poissonian spin correlations generated by collisionally
induced spin mixing in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. We measure a quantum
noise reduction of -7 dB (-10 dB corrected for detection noise) below the
standard quantum limit (SQL) for the corresponding coherent spin states. The
spin fluctuations are detected as atom number differences in the spin states
using fluorescent imaging that achieves a detection noise floor of 8 atoms per
