    Species-specific effects of microplastics on juvenile fishes

    Microplastics contamination have been extensively reported in aquatic ecosystem and organisms. It is wildly acknowledged that the ingestion, accumulation and elimination of microplastics in fishes are species-specific, which mainly depending on the feeding behavior. This study aimed to investigate the effects of microplastics on the morphology and inflammatory response in intestines of fishes with different feeding types. Largemouth bass (carnivorous fish), grass carp (herbivorous fish) and Jian carp (omnivorous fish) were used as organism model. The contributing concentration and size of microplastics were explored as well as the response time and legacy effect in fishes. Two different sizes of polystyrene microplastics (80 nm and 8 μm) were set at three concentrations. And samples were analyzed at different exposure times and depuration times. Histological analysis indicated that multiple abnormalities in intestines were presented in three species fishes after acute exposure microplastics. The mRNA abundance of immune-related genes in the intestine tissues of fishes were significantly fluctuant. There were differential expressions of genes coping with differential sizes and concentrations of microplastics exposure in different fishes. The reason for the difference effects of microplastics on fishes was still unclear but could be due to the difference in the structure and function of the digestive system. These results provided a theoretical basis to further analysis of the mechanism of fish intestinal pathology caused by microplastics

    A systematic review of blunt abdominal aortic injury and analysis of predictors of death

    At present, research on blunt abdominal aortic injury (BAAI) is limited, with the majority being case reports. Consequently, there is a significant knowledge gap concerning this condition. To address this, we conducted a systematic review by extensively searching major databases. We included all literature that provided individual (non-identifiable) data on BAAI patients, irrespective of the study design. Furthermore, we undertook regression analyses to identify predictors of death after BAAI. The search yielded 2,099 results, leading to the inclusion of 102 case reports and one conference abstract. Using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist for assessment, all studies were deemed of medium to high quality. In total, 133 patients were included, with a median age of 34 years, and 73.7% being male. The predominant clinical manifestation was pain, reported in 65.6% of patients. The most frequently observed aortic lesion severity was grade A (intimal tear or intramural hematoma) at 46.9%, and the most common lesion location was zone III (infrarenal aorta) in 88.3% of cases.  The overall mortality after BAAI was 15.3%. Multivariate regression analyses revealed the following predictors of death after BAAI: lower limb ischemia (relative risk [RR] = 7.137, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.154 - 44.161), cardiopulmonary arrest (RR = 10.250, 95% CI 1.452 - 72.344), and injuries to body parts other than the abdomen and lumbar spine (RR = 2.593, 95% CI 1.189 - 5.655). In conclusion, this review provides a detailed quantitative summary of BAAI's clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, emphasizing its high mortality rate and identifying three critical variables as predictors of death

    Association of Intraoperative Hypotension with Acute Kidney Injury after Noncardiac Surgery in Patients Younger than 60 Years Old

    Background/Aims: Intraoperative hypotension (IOH) may be associated with surgery-related acute kidney injury (AKI). However, the duration of hypotension that triggers AKI is poorly understood. The incidence of AKI with various durations of IOH and mean arterial pressures (MAPs) was investigated. Materials: A retrospective cohort study of 4,952 patients undergoing noncardiac surgery (2011 to 2016) with MAP monitoring and a length of stay of one or more days was performed. The exclusion criteria were a preoperative estimated glomerular filtration (eGFR) ≤60 mL min–1 1.73 m2–1, a preoperative MAP less than 65 mm Hg, dialysis dependence, urologic surgery, age older than 60 years, and a surgical duration of less than 60 min. The primary exposure was IOH, and the primary outcome was AKI (50% or 0.3 mg dL–1 increase in creatinine) during the first 7 postoperative days. Multivariable logistic regression was used to model the exposure-outcome relationship. Results: AKI occurred in 186 (3.76%) noncardiac surgery patients. The adjusted odds ratio for surgery-related AKI for a MAP of less than 55 mm Hg was 14.11 (95% confidence interval: 5.02–39.69) for an exposure of more than 20 min. Age was not an interaction factor between AKI and IOH. Conclusion: There was a considerably increased risk of postoperative AKI when intraoperative MAP was less than 55 mm Hg for more than 10 min. Strict blood pressure management is recommended even for patients younger than 60 years old

    A contrast-enhanced CT-based radiomic nomogram for the differential diagnosis of intravenous leiomyomatosis and uterine leiomyoma

    ObjectiveUterine intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare and unique leiomyoma that is difficult to surgery due to its ability to extend into intra- and extra-uterine vasculature. And it is difficult to differentiate from uterine leiomyoma (LM) by conventional CT scanning, which results in a large number of missed diagnoses. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of a contrast-enhanced CT-based radiomic nomogram for preoperative differentiation of IVL and LM.Methods124 patients (37 IVL and 87 LM) were retrospectively enrolled in the study. Radiomic features were extracted from contrast-enhanced CT before surgery. Clinical, radiomic, and combined models were developed using LightGBM (Light Gradient Boosting Machine) algorithm to differentiate IVL and LM. The clinical and radiomic signatures were integrated into a nomogram. The diagnostic performance of the models was evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC) and decision curve analysis (DCA).ResultsClinical factors, such as symptoms, menopausal status, age, and selected imaging features, were found to have significant correlations with the differential diagnosis of IVL and LM. A total of 108 radiomic features were extracted from contrast-enhanced CT images and selected for analysis. 29 radiomics features were selected to establish the Rad-score. A clinical model was developed to discriminate IVL and LM (AUC=0.826). Radiomic models were used to effectively differentiate IVL and LM (AUC=0.980). This radiological nomogram combined the Rad-score with independent clinical factors showed better differentiation efficiency than the clinical model (AUC=0.985, p=0.046).ConclusionThis study provides evidence for the utility of a radiomic nomogram integrating clinical and radiomic signatures for differentiating IVL and LM with improved diagnostic accuracy. The nomogram may be useful in clinical decision-making and provide recommendations for clinical treatment

    The Impact of Climate Change on the Surface Albedo over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

    Albedo is a characterization of the Earth’s surface ability to reflect solar radiation, and control the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the land surface. Within the context of global warming, the temporal and spatial changes of the albedo and its response to climate factors remain unclear. Based on MCD43A3 (V005) albedo and meteorological data (i.e., temperature and precipitation), we analyzed the spatiotemporal variations of albedo (2000–2016) and its responses to climate change during the growing season on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). The results indicated an overall downward trend in the annual albedo during the growing season, the decrease rate was 0.25%/decade, and the monthly albedo showed a similar trend, especially in May, when the decrease rate was 0.53%/decade. The changes also showed regional variations, such as for the annual albedo, the areas with significant decrease and increase in albedo were 181.52 × 103 km2 (13.10%) and 48.82 × 103 km2 (3.52%), respectively, and the intensity of albedo changes in low-elevation areas was more pronounced than in high-elevation areas. In addition, the annual albedo-temperature/precipitation relationships clearly differed at different elevations. The albedo below 2000 m and at 5000–6000 m was mainly negatively correlated with temperature, while at 2000–4000 m it was mainly negatively correlated with precipitation. The contemporaneous temperature could negatively impact the monthly albedo in significant ways at the beginning of the growing season (May and June), whereas in the middle of the growing season (July and August), the albedo was mainly negatively correlated with precipitation, and at the end of the growing season (September), the albedo showed a weak correlation with temperature/precipitation

    The Obesity-Related Dietary Pattern Is Associated with Higher Risk of Sleep Disorders: A Cross-Sectional Study from NHANES

    Evidence on the association between dietary patterns and sleep disorders is limited and controversial. In addition, studies evaluating the effect of dietary patterns on sleep disorders have seldom considered the critical role of obesity. We aimed to explore obesity-related dietary patterns and evaluate their impact on sleep disorders using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005–2014. In total, 19,892 participants aged over 20 years with two-day dietary recalls were enrolled. Obesity-related dietary patterns explaining most variance in waist circumference and BMI simultaneously were extracted from twenty-six food groups by the using partial least squares method. Sleep disorder and sleep duration, which were defined by self-reported questions, were the primary and the secondary outcome, respectively. Generalized linear models were performed to estimate the association of sleep disorders and sleep duration with dietary patterns. Two types of dietary patterns were identified. The “high fats, refined grains, and meat” pattern was characterized by high intakes of solid fats, cured meat, potatoes, refined grains, meat, cheese, and added sugars. The “low whole grains, vegetables, and fruits” pattern was characterized by low intakes of oils, whole grains, nuts and seeds, milk, fruits, and several vegetables. Participants with the highest adherence to the “high fats, refined grains, and meat” pattern had a higher risk for sleep disorders (OR (95%CI): 1.43 (1.12, 1.84)) and shorter sleep duration (β (95%CI): −0.17 (−0.26, −0.08)) compared to those with the lowest adherence. The corresponding associations for the “low whole grains, vegetables, and fruits” pattern were only significant for sleep duration (β (95%CI): −0.26 (−0.37, −0.15)). Our results found that the dietary pattern characterized by high solid fats, cured meat, potatoes, refined grains, meat, cheese, and added sugars, was associated with a higher risk for sleep disorders and shorter sleep duration

    Purpose. Recent evidence has shown that CD4+ T helper (Th) cells are involved in renal inflammation and fibrosis. However, whether renal fibrosis can be alleviated by intervening in the polarization of CD4+ T cells remains unknown. Our research investigated the effects of intravenously administered placenta mesenchymal stromal cells (PMSCs) or treatment with extracellular EVs (EVs) derived from PMSCs (PMSC-EVs) on the polarization of CD4+ T cells in rats with unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). We further verified how PMSCs affect inflammatory factor secretion and the levels of regulatory T (Treg) and Th17 CD4+ T cells in vitro. Materials and Methods. We evaluated renal interstitial inflammation and fibrosis by pathological section staining, tested the polarization of CD4+ T cells (Th17 and Treg phenotypes) by flow cytometry (FCM) and immunohistochemistry, and detected the cytokines secreted by CD4+ T cells by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results. Compared with that of control rats, the renal tissue of PMSC-treated rats exhibited lower renal Masson scores and more Foxp3+ cell infiltration, with a significantly decreased IL17A+CD4+ T cell/CD4+ T cell ratio and a significantly elevated anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) level. When CD4+ T cells were cocultured with PMSCs, CD4+IL17A+ cell percentages were decreased in a UUO model after 7 days of coculture with PMSCs. The secretion of TGF-β and IL-10 was significantly increased (P<0.05), while the secretion of IFN-γ, IL-17, and IL-6 was significantly decreased (P<0.05) in the PMSC coculture group. Moreover, after treatment with PMSC-EVs, tubulointerstitial fibrosis was alleviated, and Foxp3+/IL-17+ cell infiltration was increased in the kidneys of UUO model animals on day 7. Conclusions. PMSCs can convert the inflammatory environment into an anti-inflammatory environment by affecting the polarization of CD4+ T cells and macrophages, inhibiting the inflammatory factors IFN-γ and IL-17, and upregulating the expression of the anti-inflammatory factors TGF-β and IL-10, ultimately leading to renal protection. Such functions may be mediated by the paracrine activity of PMSC-EVs

    Analysis of Spatial Heterogeneity and Influencing Factors of Ecological Environment Quality in China&rsquo;s North-South Transitional Zone

    The ecological environment is important for the natural disaster prevention of human society. The monitoring of ecological environment quality has far-reaching practical significance for the functional construction of ecosystem services and policy coordination. Based on Landsat 8 operational land image (OLI)/thermal infrared sensor (TIRS) remote sensing image data, this study selected the normalized vegetation (NDVI), tasseled cap transformation humidity (WI), bare soil (SI), construction index (NDSI), and land surface temperature (LST) indexes from the aspects of greenness, humidity, dryness, and heat. Using spatial principal component analysis (SPCA) and the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) analyzed the spatial differentiation characteristics and influencing factors of the original remote sensing ecological index (RSEI0). The results showed that: (1) the overall RSEI average value of the Qinling-Daba Mountains in 2017 was 0.61, and the ecological environment quality was at a &ldquo;Good&rdquo; level. Greenness contributed the most to the comprehensive index of the area, and vegetation distribution had a significant impact on the ecological environment quality of the study area. Heat is a secondary impact, and it has an inhibitory effect on habitat quality; (2) the overall distribution of regional ecological environment quality was quite different, with the ecological environment quality level showing a decreasing trend from low to high altitude; RSEI0 spatial heterogeneity at the optimal scale of 2 km was the largest, and the nugget effect was 88% which indicated a high degree of spatial variability, mainly affected by structural factors; (3) Slope, relief amplitude, elevation, the proportion of high-vegetation area, proportion of construction land area, and average population density significantly impact the spatial differentiation of RSEI0. The explanatory powers of slope and relief amplitude were 56.1% and 65.3%, respectively, which were the main factors affecting the spatial differentiation of the ecological environment quality in high undulation. The results can provide important scientific support for ecological environment construction and ecological restoration in the study area

    Comprehensive Analysis of CRISPR/Cas9-Mediated Mutagenesis in Arabidopsis thaliana by Genome-Wide Sequencing

    The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein (Cas) system has been widely applied in functional genomics research and plant breeding. In contrast to the off-target studies of mammalian cells, there is little evidence for the common occurrence of off-target sites in plants and a great need exists for accurate detection of editing sites. Here, we summarized the precision of CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutations for 281 targets and found that there is a preference for single nucleotide deletions/insertions and longer deletions starting from 40 nt upstream or ending at 30 nt downstream of the cleavage site, which suggested the candidate sequences for editing sites detection by whole-genome sequencing (WGS). We analyzed the on-/off-target sites of 6 CRISPR/Cas9-mediated Arabidopsis plants by the optimized method. The results showed that the on-target editing frequency ranged from 38.1% to 100%, and one off target at a frequency of 9.8%&ndash;97.3% cannot be prevented by increasing the specificity or reducing the expression level of the Cas9 enzyme. These results indicated that designing guide RNA with high specificity may be the preferred factor to avoid the off-target events, and it is necessary to predict or detect off-target sites by WGS-based methods for preventing off targets caused by genome differences in different individuals
