    Investigating the Time Course of Part-Based and Holistic Processing in Face Perception

    Human has an exceptional ability for face recognition to keep up social network. However, it is unclear to understand the mechanisms of face recognition until now. Specifically, there is less research to examine the time course of part-based and holistic processing when these two routes trigger and finish. In the present experiments, the exposure time was manipulated to examine the time course of face processing and found evidence suggesting that holistic processing occurs shortly after part-based processing at about 200 ms, and can last for a relatively long duration up to 2,000 ms. These results may support to a dual-route model comprising holistic processing and part-based processing in face perception. Moreover, our findings were inconsistent with the previous study which suggests that no holistic processing was observed at the relatively long duration, and suspected that perceptual discriminability may have been responsible for the discrepancy

    Is the Clinical Version of the Iowa Gambling Task Relevant for Assessing Choice Behavior in Cases of Internet Addiction?

    Objective: A critical issue in research related to the Iowa gambling task (IGT) is the use of the alternative factors expected value and gainā€“loss frequency to distinguish between clinical cases and control groups. When the IGT has been used to examine cases of Internet addiction (IA), the literature reveals inconsistencies in the results. However, few studies have utilized the clinical version of IGT (cIGT) to examine IA cases. The present study aims to resolve previous inconsistencies and to examine the validity of the cIGT by comparing performances of controls with cases of Internet gaming disorder (IGD), a subtype of IA defined by the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.Methods: The study recruited 23 participants with clinically diagnosed IGD and 38 age-matched control participants. Based on the basic assumptions of IGT and the gainā€“loss frequency viewpoint, a dependent variables analysis was carried out.Results: The results showed no statistical difference between the two groups in most performance indices and therefore support the findings of most IGT-IA studies; in particular, expected value and gainā€“loss frequency did not distinguish between the IGD cases and controls. However, the participants in both groups were influenced by the gainā€“loss frequency, revealing the existence of the prominent deck B phenomenon.Conclusion: The findings provide two possible interpretations. The first is that choice behavior deficits do not constitute a characteristic feature of individuals who have been diagnosed with IGD/IA. The second is that, as the cIGT was unable to distinguish the choice behavior of the IGD/IA participants from that of controls, the cIGT may not be relevant for assessing IGD based on the indices provided by the expected value and gainā€“loss frequency perspectives in the standard administration of IGT

    Age as a predisposing factor of respiratory alkalosis in accidental carbon monoxide poisoning

    AbstractAimsThe purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of and identify the predisposing factors for respiratory alkalosis in patients with accidental carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.MethodsPatients presenting to the emergency department with accidental CO poisoning were retrospectively identified and divided into Group A (no respiratory alkalosis) and Group B (respiratory alkalosis). Charts were reviewed for neurologic status, various demographic factors, and laboratory data.ResultsA total 96 patients, 37 (38.5%) men and 59 (61.5%) women, were identified. Of these, the 58 (60.4%) patients without respiratory alkalosis were placed in Group A and the 38 (39.6%) patients with respiratory alkalosis were placed in Group B. Independent multivariate predictors of CO poisoning presenting with respiratory alkalosis were age [odds ratio (OR), 1.04; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.01ā€“1.08] and respiratory rate (OR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.01ā€“1.33). The rates of respiratory alkalosis in patients younger than 15 years, 15ā€“29 years, 30ā€“44 years, 45ā€“59 years, and older than 59 years were 17.4%, 32.4%, 51.9%, 75%, and 75%, respectively (p<0.01).ConclusionsRespiratory alkalosis in the patients with CO poisoning is not an uncommon finding, and as age increases, the percentage becomes higher. When emergency physicians are faced with patients presenting with respiratory alkalosis of undetermined cause, CO poisoning should be taken into consideration, especially in the elderly

    A Bayesian measurement error model for two-channel cell-based RNAi data with replicates

    RNA interference (RNAi) is an endogenous cellular process in which small double-stranded RNAs lead to the destruction of mRNAs with complementary nucleoside sequence. With the production of RNAi libraries, large-scale RNAi screening in human cells can be conducted to identify unknown genes involved in a biological pathway. One challenge researchers face is how to deal with the multiple testing issue and the related false positive rate (FDR) and false negative rate (FNR). This paper proposes a Bayesian hierarchical measurement error model for the analysis of data from a two-channel RNAi high-throughput experiment with replicates, in which both the activity of a particular biological pathway and cell viability are monitored and the goal is to identify short hair-pin RNAs (shRNAs) that affect the pathway activity without affecting cell activity. Simulation studies demonstrate the flexibility and robustness of the Bayesian method and the benefits of having replicates in the experiment.     Oxygen ion dynamics in the Earth's ring current: Van Allen probes observations

    Oxygen (O+) enhancements in the inner magnetosphere are often observed during geomagnetically active times, such as geomagnetic storms. In this study, we quantitatively examine the difference in ring current dynamics with and without a substantial O+ ion population based on almost 6 years of Van Allen Probes observations. Our results have not only confirmed previous finding of the role of O+ ions to the ring current but also found that abundant O+ ions are always present during large storms when sym-H < -60 nT without exception, whilst having the pressure ratio () between O+ and proton (H+) larger than 0.8 and occasionally even larger than 1 when L < 3. Simultaneously, the pressure anisotropy decreases with decreasing sym-H and increasing L shell. The pressure anisotropy decrease during the storm main phase is likely related to the pitch angle isotropization processes. In addition, we find that increases during the storm main phase and then decreases during the storm recovery phase, suggesting faster buildup and decay of O+ pressure compared to H+ ions, which are probably associated with some species dependent source and/or energization as well as loss processes in the inner magnetosphere.Accepted manuscrip

    Simultaneous block and I/O buffer floorplanning for flip-chip design

    The flip-chip package gives the highest chip density of any packaging method to support the pad-limited ASIC design. One of the most important characteristics of flip-chip designs is that the input/output buffers could be placed anywhere inside a chip. In this paper, we first introduce the floorplanning problem for the flip-chip design and formulate it as assigning the positions of input/output buffers and first-stage/last-stage blocks so that the path length between blocks and bump balls as well as the delay skew of the paths are simultaneously minimized. We then present a hierarchical method to solve the problem. We first cluster a block and its corresponding buffers to reduce the problem size. Then, we go into iterations of the alternating and interacting global optimization step and the partitioning step. The global optimization step places blocks based on simulated annealing using the B*-tree representation to minimize a given cost function. The partitioning step dissects the chip into two subregions, and the blocks are divided into two groups and are placed in respective subregions. The two steps repeat until each subregion contains at most a given number of blocks, defined by the ratio of the total block area to the chip area. At last, we refine the floorplan by perturbing blocks inside a subregion as well as in different subregions. Compared with the B*-tree based floorplanner alone, our method is more efficient and obtains significantly better results, with an average cost of only 51.8 % of that obtained by using the B*-tree alone, based on a set of real industrial flip-chip designs provided by leading companies

    Risk factors for pulmonary tuberculosis in patients with chronic obstructive airway disease in Taiwan: a nationwide cohort study

    BACKGROUND: An association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and tuberculosis (TB) has been described, mainly due to smoking and corticosteroid use. Whether inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy is associated with an increased risk of TB remains unclear. METHODS: We selected COPD cases by using six diagnostic scenarios and control subjects from a nationwide health insurance database, and applied time-dependent Cox regression analysis to identify the risk factors for TB. RESULTS: Among 1,000,000 beneficiaries, 23,594 COPD cases and 47,188 non-COPD control subjects were selected. Cox regression analysis revealed that age, male gender, diabetes mellitus, end-stage renal disease, and cirrhosis, as well as COPD (hazard ratio = 2.468 [2.205ā€“2.762]) were independent risk factors for TB. Among the COPD cases, those who developed TB received more oral corticosteroids and oral Ī²-agonists. Time-dependent Cox regression analysis revealed that age, male gender, diabetes mellitus, low income, oral corticosteroid dose, and oral Ī²-agonist dose, but not ICS dose, were independent risk factors for TB. The identified risk factors and their hazard ratios were similar among the COPD cases selected using different scenarios. CONCLUSION: Keeping a high suspicion and regularly monitoring for the development of pulmonary TB in COPD patients are necessary, especially for those receiving higher doses of oral corticosteroids and other COPD medications. Although ICS therapy has been shown to predispose COPD patients to pneumonia in large randomized clinical trials, it does not increase the risk of TB in real world practice
