    The Effects of Plant-Soil-Enzyme Interactions on Plant Composition, Biomass and Diversity of Alpine Meadows in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

    Four different alpine meadow communities were studied to examine the effects of plant-soil-enzyme interactions on plant composition and diversity. Enzyme activities differed by meadow type, and in general were higher in the upper soil layers (0–10 and 10–20 cm) than in the 20–40 cm layer. Community differences in plant composition or functional group composition were reflected in plant biomass distribution. The identity of a species (or a functional group) was a greater determinant of ecosystem function than the number of plant species. A significant correlation was found between the coverage per functional group and the aboveground biomass of functional groups in four alpine meadows. Soil microbial biomass carbon (Cmic) and enzyme activity were each affected by both functional group biomass and CAB in the different meadow types. The negative correlation between diversity and CAB in the KTS may be influenced by a high soil nutrients input as a result of a higher litter input because of high aboveground biomass. Soil enzyme activities have been related to soil physio-chemical characters and plant primary production to change in vegetation.     FROPUF: How to Extract More Entropy from Two Ring Oscillators in FPGA-Based PUFs

    Ring oscillator (RO) based physically unclonable function (PUF) on FPGAs is crucial and popular for its nice properties and easy implementation. The compensated measurement based on the ratio of two ring oscillators’ frequencies proves to be particularly effective to extract entropy of process variations. However from two ring oscillators only one bit entropy is extracted and RO PUFs will occupy numerous resource with the size of private information increasing. Motivated by this inefficient resource usage, we propose an elegant and efficient method to extract at least 31 bits entropy from two ring oscillators on FPGAs by utilizing the fine control of programmable delay lines (PDL). We call this construction Further ROPUF (FROPUF). In this paper, we present in detail how to take advantage of the underlying random process variation which derives from the lookup tables (LUT) of two ring oscillators, and show that the in-depth variation can be extracted by a similar second order difference calculation. In addition, we reveal the consistency of the evaluation results from Xilinx FPGAs (e.g. Virtex-5, Virtex-6, Kintex-7) and those by simulation of FROPUF. The responses of our new construction have a nominal bit-error-rate (BER) of 1.85% at 27 ◦ C and FROPUF greatly promotes the number of entropy with equivalent reliability of the general ROPUF

    Diagnostic value of urine sCD163 levels for sepsis and relevant acute kidney injury: a prospective study

    BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a common syndrome in critically ill patients and easily leads to the occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI), with high mortality rates. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of urine soluble CD163 (sCD163) for identification of sepsis, severity of sepsis, and for secondary AKI, and to assess the patients’ prognosis. METHODS: We enrolled 20 cases with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), 40 cases with sepsis (further divided into 17 sepsis cases and 23 severe sepsis cases) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), and 20 control cases. Results for urine sCD163 were recorded on the day of admission to the ICU, and AKI occurrence was noted. RESULTS: On the day of ICU admission, the sepsis group exhibited higher levels of urine sCD163 (74.8 ng/ml; range: 47.9-148.3 ng/ml) compared with those in the SIRS group (31.9 ng/ml; 16.8-48.0, P < 0.001). The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.83 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.72-0.94, P < 0.001) the sensitivity was 0.83, and the specificity was 0.75 (based on a cut-off point of 43.0 ng/ml). Moreover, the severe sepsis group appeared to have a higher level of sCD163 compared with that in the sepsis group (76.2; 47.2-167.5 ng/ml vs. 74.2; 46.2-131.6 ng/ml), but this was not significant. For 15 patients with AKI, urine sCD163 levels at AKI diagnosis were significantly higher than those of the remaining 35 sepsis patients upon ICU admission (121.0; 74.6-299.1 ng/ml vs. 61.8; 42.8-128.3 ng/ml, P = 0.049). The AUC for urine sCD163 was 0.688 (95% CI: 0.51-0.87, P = 0.049). Sepsis patients with a poor prognosis showed a higher urine sCD163 level at ICU admission (98.6; 50.3-275.6 ng/ml vs. 68.0; 44.8-114.5 ng/ml), but this was not significant. Patients with AKI with a poor prognosis had higher sCD163 levels than those in patients with a better prognosis (205.9; 38.6-766.0 ng/ml vs. 80.9; 74.9-141.0 ng/ml), but this was not significant. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows, for the first time, the potential value of urine sCD163 levels for identifying sepsis and diagnosing AKI, as well as for assessment of patients’ prognosis.     Exploration of the involvement of LncRNA in HIV-associated encephalitis using bioinformatics

    Background HIV-associated encephalitis (HIVE) is one of the common complications of HIV infection, and the pathogenesis of HIVE remains unclear, while lncRNA might be involved it. In this study, we made re-annotation on the expression profiling from the HIVE study in the public database, identified the lncRNA that might be involved in HIVE, and explored the possible mechanism. Methods In the GEO public database, the microarray expression profile (GSE35864) of three regions of brain tissues (white matter, frontal cortex and basal ganglia brain tissues) was chosen, updated annotation was performed to construct the non-cording-RNA (ncRNA) microarray data. Morpheus was used to identify the differential expressed ncRNA, and Genbank of NCBI was used to identify lncRNAs. The StarBase, PITA and miRDB databases were used to predict the target miRNAs of lncRNA. The TargetScan, PicTar and MiRanda databases were used to predict the target genes of miRNAs. The GO and KEGG pathway analysis were used to make function analysis on the targets genes. Results Seventeen differentially expressed lncRNAs were observed in the white matter of brain tissues, for which 352 target miRNAs and 6,659 target genes were predicted. The GO function analysis indicated that the lncRNAs were mainly involved in the nuclear transcription and translation processes. The KEGG pathway analysis showed that the target genes were significantly enriched in 33 signal pathways, of which 11 were clearly related to the nervous system function. Discussion The brand-new and different microarray results can be obtained through the updated annotation of the chips, and it is feasible to identify lncRNAs from ordinary chips. The results suggest that lncRNA may be involved in the occurrence and development of HIVE, which provides a new direction for further research on the diagnosis and treatment of HIVE

    Tumor-preventing activity of aspirin in multiple cancers based on bioinformatic analyses

    Background Acetylsalicylic acid was renamed aspirin in 1899, and it has been widely used for its multiple biological actions. Because of the diversity of the cellular processes and diseases that aspirin reportedly affects and benefits, uncertainty remains regarding its mechanism in different biological systems. Methods The Drugbank and STITCH databases were used to find direct protein targets (DPTs) of aspirin. The Mentha database was used to analyze protein–protein interactions (PPIs) to find DPT-associated genes. DAVID was used for the GO and KEGG enrichment analyses. The cBio Cancer Genomics Portal database was used to mine genetic alterations and networks of aspirin-associated genes in cancer. Results Eighteen direct protein targets (DPT) and 961 DPT-associated genes were identified for aspirin. This enrichment analysis resulted in eight identified KEGG pathways that were associated with cancers. Analysis using the cBio portal indicated that aspirin might have effects on multiple tumor suppressors, such as TP53, PTEN, and RB1 and that TP53 might play a central role in aspirin-associated genes. Discussion The results not only suggest that aspirin might have anti-tumor actions against multiple cancers but could also provide new directions for further research on aspirin using a bioinformatics analysis approach

However, this massive ‘‘greening’’ effort has been less effective than expected; afforestation has sometimes produced unintended environmental, ecological, and socioeconomic consequences, and has failed to achieve the desired ecological benefits. Where afforestation has succeeded, the approach was tailored to local environmental conditions. Using the right plant species or species composition for the site and considering alternatives such as grassland restoration have been important success factors. To expand this success, government policy should shift from a forest-based approach to a results-based approach.     Selinexor in Advanced, Metastatic Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma: A Multinational, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial

    PURPOSE Antitumor activity in preclinical models and a phase I study of patients with dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DD-LPS) was observed with selinexor. We evaluated the clinical benefit of selinexor in patients with previously treated DD-LPS whose sarcoma progressed on approved agents. METHODS SEAL was a phase II-III, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Patients age 12 years or older with advanced DD-LPS who had received two-five lines of therapy were randomly assigned (2:1) to selinexor (60 mg) or placebo twice weekly in 6-week cycles (crossover permitted). The primary end point was progression-free survival (PFS). Patients who received at least one dose of study treatment were included for safety analysis (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: ). RESULTS Two hundred eighty-five patients were enrolled (selinexor, n = 188; placebo, n = 97). PFS was significantly longer with selinexor versus placebo: hazard ratio (HR) 0.70 (95% CI, 0.52 to 0.95; one-sided P = .011; medians 2.8 v 2.1 months), as was time to next treatment: HR 0.50 (95% CI, 0.37 to 0.66; one-sided P < .0001; medians 5.8 v 3.2 months). With crossover, no difference was observed in overall survival. The most common treatment-emergent adverse events of any grade versus grade 3 or 4 with selinexor were nausea (151 [80.7%] v 11 [5.9]), decreased appetite (113 [60.4%] v 14 [7.5%]), and fatigue (96 [51.3%] v 12 [6.4%]). Four (2.1%) and three (3.1%) patients died in the selinexor and placebo arms, respectively. Exploratory RNA sequencing analysis identified that the absence of CALB1 expression was associated with longer PFS with selinexor compared with placebo (median 6.9 v 2.2 months; HR, 0.19; P = .001). CONCLUSION Patients with advanced, refractory DD-LPS showed improved PFS and time to next treatment with selinexor compared with placebo. Supportive care and dose reductions mitigated side effects of selinexor. Prospective validation of CALB1 expression as a predictive biomarker for selinexor in DD-LPS is warranted.     Epidemiology of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Chongqing, China: A retrospective observational study from 2010 to 2017.

    China is one of the top 30 countries with high multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and rifampin-resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) burden. Chongqing is a southwest city of China with a large rural population. A retrospective observational study has been performed based on routine tuberculosis (TB) surveillance data in Chongqing from 2010 to 2017. The MDR/RR-TB notification rate increased from 0.03 cases per 100,000 population in 2010 to 2.1 cases per 100,000 population in 2017. The extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) notification rate has increased to 0.09 cases per 100,000 population in 2017. There was a decreasing detection gap between the number of notified MDR/RR-TB cases and the estimate number of MDR/RR-TB cases in new TB cases. The treatment success rate of MDR/RR-TB was 59% (95% confidence interval [CI], 53%-65%) in this period. Despite the progress achieved, the prevalence of MDR/RR-TB was still high facing challenges including detection gaps in new TB cases, the regional disparity, and the high risk for MDR/RR-TB in elderly people and farmers.
