    THE EFFECTS OF WEARING SPANDEX WEAR WITH COMPRESSION BAND ON MUSCLE ACTIVITY DURING A GOLF SWING

    The purpose of this study was to determine how spandex wear with compressive band affects muscle activities during a golf swing. This study showed that average and maximum nEMG (normalized EMG) values of left AO (external abdominal oblique) were less in EG (experimental group) compared with CG (control group) during back swing, whereas those of left PM (pectoralis major) in EG were greater than CG. It is more likely that EG performed effectively golf swing without excess muscle activity. Thus, the spandex wear with compressive band played an important role in improving swing performance with injury prevention. This has led to suggestions of the need for further kinetic and kinematic analyses to evaluate its function

    Substroke Matching by Segmenting and Merging for Online Korean Cursive Character Recognition

    The Korean character is composed of several alphabets in two-dimensional formation and the total number of Korean characters exceeds eleven thousand. Therefore, the previous approaches to Korean cursive characters pay most of their attention to segmenting a character into alphabets accurately. However, it is difficult because the boundaries of alphabets are not apparent in most cases. We propose an alphabet-based method without assuming accurate alphabet segmentation. In the proposed method, a cursive character is segmented into substrokes by a set of segmenting conditions. Then it is matched with the reference substrokes generated from alphabet models and ligatures by segmenting and merging in the process of recognition. Among substrokes, a certain substroke can be either an alphabet itself a part of alphabet or a composite of the alphabet and ligature. We applied the proposed method to 5000 Korean characters and got the result of 83.4% for the first rank and 89.2% for the top 5 result candidates with the speed of 0.17 seconds on average per character on a PC which uses Intel Pentium 90 Mhz CPU

    Development of the Methodology for Application of Revised Source Term to Operating Nuclear Power Plants in Korea

    ABSTRACT Considering the current trend in applying the revised source term proposed by NUREG-1465 to the nuclear power plants in the U. S., it is expected that the revised source term will be applied to the Korean operating nuclear power plants in the near future, even though the exact time can not be estimated. To meet the future technical demands, it is necessary to prepare the technical system including the related regulatory requirements in advance. In this research, therefore, it is intended to develop the methodology to apply the revised source term to operating nuclear power plants in Korea. Several principles were established to develop the application methodologies. First, it is not necessary to modify the existing regulations about source term (i.e., any back-fitting to operating nuclear plants is not necessary). Second, if the pertinent margin of safety is guaranteed, the revised source term suggested by NUREG-1465 may be useful to full application. Finally, a part of revised source term could be selected to application based on the technical feasibility. As the results of this research, several methodologies to apply the revised source term to the Korean operating nuclear power plants have been developed, which include 1) the selective (or limited) application to use only some of all the characteristics of the revised source term, such as release timing of fission products and chemical form of radio-iodine and 2) the full application to use all the characteristics of the revised source term. The developed methodologies are actually applied to Ulchin 3&4 units and their application feasibilities are reviewed. The results of this research are used as either a manual in establishing the plan and the procedure for applying the revised source term to the domestic nuclear plant from the utility's viewpoint; or a technical basis of revising the related regulations from the regulatory body's viewpoint

    The purpose of this study was to investigate how spandex garment with compressive band affects kinematic variables during a golf swing. The X-factor and angular velocity of the club in EG were increased during the down swing phase, whereas the significant changes of other kinematic variables were not found in this study. Thus, the effects of wearing spandex garment with compression band cannot be explained as a function of the kinematic variables of interest. It is clear that wearing spandex garment with compressive band may enhance joint stability, which in turn may affect joint kinetics and muscle activation. This has led to suggestions of the need for further kinetic and EMG analyses to evaluate its function

    Manganese/TiO2 Composites Prepared and Used for Photocatalytic Active Textiles

    Manganese/TiO2 composites are prepared by a solvothermal process starting from the precursors titanium propoxide and manganese nitrate. The solvothermal processes are driven at temperatures of 140 °C or 180 °C. The formation of anatase as crystalline TiO2-phase was determined by XRD for preparation conditions at 180 °C. The occurance of crystalline phases in nanometer scale is determined further by TEM. The prepared manganese/TiO2-composites are further investigated as coating onto viscose textile. The photocatalytic activity of those composites was determined by degradation of organic dye stuff under illumination with UV-light. The effect of photocatalytic dye degradation is also investigated in presence of H2O2. The prepared textile coatings exhibit a high capability for dye decomposition under the chosen arrangement of investigations. For this reason, the prepared coated textile materials could be of high interest for industrial applications, for example, as filter material for cleaning waste water from dyeing processes.
