Polarization retention of thin ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene film capacitors

Get PDF
Excellent retention of the initial remanent polarizations was observed in ca. 200 nm thick ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) film capacitors with the writing pulse amplitude and time width of +/- 20 V and 1 ms, respectively, over 200 h at 80 degrees C. The opposite state program turned out more sensitive to retention deterioration than the same state one in both switching and nonswitching mode when either writing pulse amplitude or time width decreases. Nonswitching retention in the opposite state mode is in particular one of the most critical properties for designing a ferroelectric polymer capacitor memoryopen8

Purpose To analyze the baseline clinical factors and medication treatment strategy used in cases with medication treatment failure of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods From January 2006 to December 2009, 677 BPH patients with at least 3 months of treatment with medication were enrolled. We analyzed clinical factors by medication failure (n=161) versus maintenance (n=516), by prostate size (less than 30 g, n=231; 30 to 50 g, n=244; greater than 50 g, n=202), and by prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels (less than 1.4 ng/mL, n=324; more than 1.4 ng/mL, n=353). Results Age, combination medication rate, PSA, and prostate volume were statistically different between the medication treatment failure and maintenance groups. By prostate size, the PSA and medication failure rates were relatively higher and the medication period was shorter in patients with a prostate size of more than 30 g. The combination medication rate was higher in patients with a prostate size of more than 50 g. The medication failure rate and prostate volume were higher in patients with a PSA level of more than 1.4 ng/mL. However, the combination treatment rate was not significantly different in patients with a PSA level lower than 1.4 ng/mL. Suggestive cutoffs for combination medication are a prostate volume of 34 g and PSA level of 1.9 ng/mL. Conclusions The clinical factors associated with medication failure were age, treatment type, and prostate volume. Combination therapy should be considered more in Korea in patients with a PSA level higher than 1.4 ng/mL and a prostate volume of between 30 and 50 g to prevent medication failure

High-efficiency Bidirectional Buck-Boost Converter for Residential Energy Storage System

This paper proposes a bidirectional dc-dc converter for residential micro-grid applications. The proposed converter can operate over an input voltage range that overlaps the output voltage range. This converter uses two snubber capacitors to reduce the switch turn-off losses, a dc-blocking capacitor to reduce the input/output filter size, and a 1:1 transformer to reduce core loss. The windings of the transformer are connected in parallel and in reverse-coupled configuration to suppress magnetic flux swing in the core. Zero-voltage turn-on of the switch is achieved by operating the converter in discontinuous conduction mode. The experimental converter was designed to operate at a switching frequency of 40-210 kHz, an input voltage of 48 V, an output voltage of 36-60 V, and an output power of 50-500 W. The power conversion efficiency for boost conversion to 60 V was >= 98.3% in the entire power range. The efficiency for buck conversion to 36 V was >= 98.4% in the entire power range. The output voltage ripple at full load was <3.59 V-p.p for boost conversion (60 V) and 1.35 V-p.p for buck conversion (36 V) with the reduced input/output filter. The experimental results indicate that the proposed converter is well-suited to smart-grid energy storage systems that require high efficiency, small size, and overlapping input and output voltage ranges.11Ysciescopu

Get PDF
Various postoperative complications have been reported after the use of tension-free vaginal tapes (TVT). The transobturator approach was introduced to minimize the potential complications. The next generation of recently introduced TVT-SECUR is intended to minimize the incidence of complications. Herein we report a case of internal pudendal artery injury sustained during this procedure that was successfully treated by radiological embolization. Angiography with vessel embolization, when available, should be considered when the arterial injury is suspected

TLR3 signaling is either protective or pathogenic for the development of Theiler's virus-induced demyelinating disease depending on the time of viral infection

Background: We have previously shown that toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3)-mediated signaling plays an important role in the induction of innate cytokine responses to Theiler\u27s murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) infection. In addition, cytokine levels produced after TMEV infection are significantly higher in the glial cells of susceptible SJL mice compared to those of resistant C57BL/6 mice. However, it is not known whether TLR3-mediated signaling plays a protective or pathogenic role in the development of demyelinating disease. Methods: SJL/J and B6; 129S-Tlr3(tm1Flv)/J (TLR3KO-B6) mice, and TLR3KO-SJL mice that TLR3KO-B6 mice were backcrossed to SJL/J mice for 6 generations were infected with Theiler\u27s murine encephalomyelitis virus (2 x 10(5) PFU) with or without treatment with 50 mu g of poly IC. Cytokine production and immune responses in the CNS and periphery of infected mice were analyzed. Results: We investigated the role of TLR3-mediated signaling in the protection and pathogenesis of TMEV-induced demyelinating disease. TLR3KO-B6 mice did not develop demyelinating disease although they displayed elevated viral loads in the CNS. However, TLR3KO-SJL mice displayed increased viral loads and cellular infiltration in the CNS, accompanied by exacerbated development of demyelinating disease, compared to the normal littermate mice. Late, but not early, anti-viral CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell responses in the CNS were compromised in TLR3KO-SJL mice. However, activation of TLR3 with poly IC prior to viral infection also exacerbated disease development, whereas such activation after viral infection restrained disease development. Activation of TLR3 signaling prior to viral infection hindered the induction of protective IFN-gamma-producing CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell populations. In contrast, activation of these signals after viral infection improved the induction of IFN-gamma-producing CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells. In addition, poly IC-pretreated mice displayed elevated PDL-1 and regulatory FoxP3(+) CD4+ T cells in the CNS, while poly IC-post-treated mice expressed reduced levels of PDL-1 and FoxP3(+) CD4(+) T cells. Conclusions: These results suggest that TLR3-mediated signaling during viral infection protects against demyelinating disease by reducing the viral load and modulating immune responses. In contrast, premature activation of TLR3 signal transduction prior to viral infection leads to pathogenesis via over-activation of the pathogenic immune response

Purpose The aim of this study is to suggest configuration methodologies of active building information model (BIM) functions that enable to practically control limitations by optimizing schedule overlapping linked to its space models after analyzing workspace conflict analysis for a bridge model. This study also suggests development methodologies of active BIM-functions, linking an optimized method and improved strategies of future BIM-operation model through an analysis of limitations of a passive BIM-operation system for architectural projects. Method The existing BIM-system manually performed a simplified comparison review of 3D-shapes and its virtual reality (VR) analysis with visual manipulation of 3D-models in a virtual environment. Such BIM functions require a separate analysis process to organize BIM-output data as reprocessed business data. This has many limitations when directly utilizing the visual information produced by commercial BIM-systems as practical operation data. Accordingly, this study develops functions of an active BIM-system so that the managers can directly analyze practical requirements by integrating an optimized analysis algorithm with the BIM-system to improve the passive BIM operation environments. As a method of configuring the active BIM-functions, an optimized algorithm for establishing resolution strategies for workspace conflicts is constructed. As functions for supporting active BIM-operations, this study utilizes fuzzy and genetic algorithm (GA) approaches. These approaches will be used to develop visualized risk assessment model and workspace conflict optimization model based on active BIM. Results & Discussion By enhancing fragmentary analysis functions of simplified 3D-models with the development of an active BIM-system, the BIM-system can utilize output information derived from a process of analysis, evaluation and control of the BIM-models as a practical operation information model for both design and construction phase. Therefore, it is expected that an active BIM can simplify data analysis and the system operation process for managers with virtual object models and expand the active BIM-system to the life cycle of civil engineering projects
