Could the 21-cm absorption be explained by the dark matter suggested by 8^8Be transitions?

The stronger than expected 21-cm absorption was observed by EDGES recently, and another anomaly of 8^8Be transitions would be signatures of new interactions. These two issues may be related to each other, e.g., pseudoscalar AA mediated fermionic millicharged dark matter (DM), and the 21-cm absorption could be induced by photon mediated scattering between MeV millicharged DM and hydrogen. This will be explored in this paper. For fermionic millicharged DM χˉχ\bar{\chi} \chi with masses in a range of 2mA<2mχ<3mA2 m_A < 2 m_{\chi} < 3 m_A, the p-wave annihilation χˉχ→AA\bar{\chi} \chi \to A A would be dominant during DM freeze-out. The s-wave annihilation χˉχ\bar{\chi} \chi →A,γ\to A, \gamma →e+e−\to e^+ e^- is tolerant by constraints from CMB and the 21-cm absorption. The millicharged DM can evade constraints from direct detection experiments. The process of K+→π+π0K^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 with the invisible decay π0→χˉχ\pi^0 \to \bar{\chi} \chi could be employed to search for the millicharged DM, and future high intensity K+K^+ sources, such as NA62, will do the job.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, the accepted version, EPJ

The transition prediction toolkit: LST, SIT, PSE, DNS, and LES

The e(sup N) method for predicting transition onset is an amplitude ratio criterion that is on the verge of full maturation for three-dimensional, compressible, real gas flows. Many of the components for a more sophisticated, absolute amplitude criterion are now emerging: receptivity theory, secondary instability theory, parabolized stability equations approaches, direct numerical simulation and large-eddy simulation. This paper will provide a description of each of these new theoretical tools and provide indications of their current status

    Where Are the Accounting Professors?

Accounting education is facing a crisis of shortage of accounting faculty. This study discusses the reasons behind the shortage and offers suggestions to increase the supply of accounting faculty. Our suggestions are as followings. First, educators should begin promoting accounting academia as one of the career choices to undergraduate and graduate students. Second, schools should provide adequate financial support to Ph.D. students. Third, academic administers should encourage faculty’s involvement in mentoring Ph.D. students. Finally, the tenure and promotion system needs to be reevaluated to facilitate success in faculty development

A Case Study Exploring a Novice Kindergarten Teacher’s Perceptions and Practice of the Multiliteracies Pedagogy in his Virtual Kindergarten Classroom

Teachers faced many challenges as they transitioned to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase of technology brought the concept of multiliteracies, broadening the term literacy to include the social and cultural backgrounds of students (Baguley et al., 2010), by acknowledging multimodality to represent and communicate using images, words, sounds and digital media (Walsh, 2010). This case study aims to explore how a kindergarten teacher understood and implemented literacy and the multiliteracies pedagogy in an online environment. Data collection included virtual interviews, teacher reflective notes, teaching literacy resources, researcher observation, and student work samples. Findings indicate the teacher’s literacy teaching focused on phonological awareness, phonemic awareness and letter-sound correspondences. The teacher also faced challenges, such as lack of teacher preparation during his Bachelor of Education program, insufficient training and professional development from his workplace, inconsistency of the quality and utility of technology, constraints of virtual learning for young learners, and varying degrees of parental support. The results of this study indicate the importance of preparing pre-service teachers in Bachelor of Education programs and in-service teachers on continuous professional development on evidence-based literacy programs, multiliteracies and virtual learning

Unfrozen parts of impinging water on the surface of the aircraft will run back under the effect of high-speed airflow, altering liquid distribution and heat transfer characteristics. In this paper we conducted a series of experiments over a wide range of wind speed (Ua = 17.8~52.2 m/s), film Reynolds number (Ref = 26~128) and inclined angle (α = 0°, ±30°, ±45°) to investigate the dynamics of thin water film on an Aluminum substrate. The superficial morphology of the water film were investigated by high-speed camera, and the instantaneous film thicknesses were measured by a laser focus displacement meter based on a confocal chromatic technique. The interface between the gas and liquid phases consisted of underlying thin film and multiple scaled fluctuations. The measured time-averaged filim thickness data agrees with previous model predictions. Based on the experimental results, a relationship between the film thickness and the wind speed, film Reynolds number, inclined angle was proposed. A new correlation to calculate the interfacial shear stress and superficial roughness on the wavy surface is also suggested

Plurality in Naxi and its typological implications

    No full text
Plurality in Naxi can be explicitly expressed by suffixation or tone change on common nouns denoting human beings. This paper complements the published literature in providing a detailed description of its morpho-syntax and semantics of plurality. It shows that Naxi belongs to the typologically rare type of language in which the coding of plurality and definiteness is in one morpheme, the other three languages known to date to have this property are Chinese, Khmer and Maori. Evidence for the definiteness property of explicit plurality comes from it being excluded in syntactic environments in which definiteness noun phrases are ruled out. It is argued that the empirical basis of Greenberg’s (1974) generalization regarding the relation between numeral classifiers and compulsory expression of nominal plurality is subject to the interpretation of explicit expression of plurality. If it is taken to embody in a morpheme (or a set of morphemes) specifically for expressing plurality, then Naxi is consistent with Greenberg’s claim that languages with numeral classifiers do not have compulsory expression of plurality on nouns.Australian National Universit

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of unmet supportive care needs among bone sarcoma patients in Kuching, Sarawak and explored the relationship between these needs with various associated factors. Methods: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among all bone sarcoma patients recruited from Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, Sarawak. Data collection was done using an adopted questionnaire via interview assisted survey. Unmet needs were assessed using the 59-item Supportive Care Needs Survey (SCNS-SF59). Data was entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results: A total of 75 respondents participated in the study. The patients were mainly above 36 years (56%), Sarawak natives (33.3%) and married (54.7%). Majority of patients were not undergoing any active treatment (52%). Nine out of 10 items with highest ‘moderate’ to ‘high’ level unmet needs were from the domain of Health system and information. Needs from Physical and daily living, and sexuality domains were found to have statistically significant associations with ethnicity, age and marital status. Conclusion: Patients who were diagnosed with bone sarcoma had substantive unmet supportive care needs in relation with their illness trajectory. It is important that such needs to be acknowledged in order to provide quality healthcare services to them. Key words : bone sarcoma, unmet needs, Malaysia, SCNS-SF59,supportive care need
