    Analysis of Long-Range Transport of Carbon Dioxide and Its High Concentration Events over East Asian Region Using GOSAT Data and GEOS-Chem Modeling

    This study aims to evaluate the long-range transport of CO2 in East Asian region, using concentration data in a surface measurement site (Gosan Station), column averaged concentration data of satellite-borne instrument (GOSAT), and GEOS-Chem modeling results for the period of June 2009 to May 2011. We perform a validation of the data from GOSAT and GEOS-Chem with total column observations (TCCON). The analysis of the long-range transport and high concentration (HC) events using surface/satellite observations and modeling results is conducted. During the HC events, the concentrations in CO2 and other air pollutants such as SO2 and CO are higher than that of all episodes. It means that CO2, known as a globally well-mixed gas, may also act as a fingerprint of human activity with unique regional characteristics like other air pollutants. This comprehensive analysis, in particular with GOSAT CO2 observation data, shows that CO2 plume with high concentration can be long-range transported with 1-2 days' duration with regional scale. We can find out with GEOS-Chem tagging simulation that more than 45% of the elevated CO2 concentration over central/eastern China, Korea, and Japan on high concentration days can be explained by emission sources of East Asia mainland.open0

    Microspinning: Local Surface Mixing via Rotation of Magnetic Microparticles for Efficient Small-Volume Bioassays

    The need for high-throughput screening has led to the miniaturization of the reaction volume of the chamber in bioassays. As the reactor gets smaller, surface tension dominates the gravitational or inertial force, and mixing efficiency decreases in small-scale reactions. Because passive mixing by simple diffusion in tens of microliter-scale volumes takes a long time, active mixing is needed. Here, we report an efficient micromixing method using magnetically rotating microparticles with patterned magnetization induced by magnetic nanoparticle chains. Because the microparticles have magnetization patterning due to fabrication with magnetic nanoparticle chains, the microparticles can rotate along the external rotating magnetic field, causing micromixing. We validated the reaction efficiency by comparing this micromixing method with other mixing methods such as simple diffusion and the use of a rocking shaker at various working volumes. This method has the potential to be widely utilized in suspension assay technology as an efficient mixing strategy

    Effect of Achyranthes bidentata

    The present study investigated the antiobesity effect of Achyranthes bidentata Blume root water extract in a 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation model and rats fed with a high-fat diet. To investigate the effect of Achyranthes bidentata Blume on adipogenesis in vitro, differentiating 3T3-L1 cells in adipocyte-induction media were treated every two days with Achyranthes bidentata Blume at various concentrations (1 to 25 μg/mL) for eight days. We found that Achyranthes bidentata Blume root inhibited 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation without affecting cell viability, and Western blot analysis revealed that phospho-Akt expression was markedly decreased, whereas there was no significant change in perilipin expression. Furthermore, administration of Achyranthes bidentata Blume root (0.5 g/kg body weight for six weeks) to rats fed with a high-fat diet significantly reduced body weight gain without affecting food intake, and the level of triglyceride was significantly decreased when compared to those in rats fed with only a high-fat diet. These results suggest that Achyranthes bidentata Blume root water extract could have a beneficial effect on inhibition of adipogenesis and controlling body weight in rats fed with a high-fat diet

    Primary Acinic Cell Carcinoma of the Breast: A Case Report with an Immunohistochemical and Ultrastructural Studies

    Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is extremely rare and is characterized by widespread acinar cell-like differentiation. We report of a 39-year-old woman presented with a palpable breast mass with significant morphological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings. Histologically, ACC showed a diffuse glandular infiltrative pattern, with small acinar or glandular structures mixed with solid nests. Neoplastic cells were monotonous proliferation of cells with a granular or clear cytoplasm, resembling acinar cells of the salivary glands or Paneth cells. Both glandular and solid tumor cell populations were strongly positive for lysozyme and α-1-antitrypsin

    Laparoendoscopic Single-Site and Conventional Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy: A Matched Case-Control Study

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe our initial clinical experience and assess the feasibility of laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) in the treatment of benign adrenal adenoma. Patients and Methods: Nine patients undergoing LESS adrenalectomy for benign adrenal adenoma were compared with 17 patients undergoing conventional laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Controls were matched for age, sex, surgical indications, and tumor size via a statistically generated selection of all conventional laparoscopic adrenalectomies performed during the same period of time. Results: No significant differences in the mean operative time (169 vs. 144.5 minutes, p = 0.287), blood loss (177.8 vs. 204.7 mL, p = 0.792), and postoperative hospital stay (3.2 vs. 3.5 days, p = 0.525) were observed between the LESS and conventional laparoscopy group. However, postoperative pain, as measured by the number of days of intravenous (IV) patient controlled anesthesia use, was significantly lower in the LESS group (0.9 vs. 1.9 days, p = 0.047). Perioperative complications were similar between the two groups.     First-time comparison between NO2 vertical columns from GEMS and Pandora measurements

    The Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is a UV&ndash;visible spectrometer onboard the GEO-KOMPSAT-2B satellite launched into geostationary orbit in February 2020. To evaluate GEMS NO2 column data, comparison was carried out using NO2 vertical column density (VCD) measured using direct-sunlight observations by the Pandora spectrometer system at four sites in Seosan, South Korea, during November 2020 to January 2021. Correlation coefficients between GEMS and Pandora NO2 data at four sites ranged from 0.35 to 0.48, with root mean square errors (RMSEs) from 4.7 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 to 5.5 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 for cloud fraction (CF) &lt; 0.7. Higher correlation coefficients of 0.62&ndash;0.78 with lower RMSEs from 3.3 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 to 4.3 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 were found with CF &lt; 0.3, indicating the higher sensitivity of GEMS to atmospheric NO2 in less-cloudy conditions. Overall, GEMS NO2 column data tend to be lower than those of Pandora due to differences in representative spatial coverage, with a large negative bias under high-CF conditions. With correction for horizontal representativeness in Pandora measurement coverage, the correlation coefficients range from 0.69 to 0.81 with RMSEs from 3.2 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 to 4.9 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 were achieved for CF &lt; 0.3, showing the better correlation with the correction than that without the correction.</p
