    Dynamic region of interest transcoding for multipoint video conferencing

    This paper presents a region of interest transcoding scheme for multipoint video conferencing to enhance the visual quality. In a multipoint videoconference, usually there are only one or two active conferees at one time which are the regions of interest to the other conferees involved. We propose a Dynamic Sub-Window Skipping (DSWS) scheme to firstly identify the active participants from the multiple incoming encoded video streams by calculating the motion activity of each sub-window, and secondly reduce the frame-rates of the motion inactive participants by skipping these less-important subwindows. The bits saved by the skipping operation are reallocated to the active sub-windows to enhance the regions of interest. We also propose a low-complexity scheme to compose and trace the unavailable motion vectors with a good accuracy in the dropped inactive sub-windows after performing the DSWS. Simulation results show that the proposed methods not only significantly improve the visual quality on the active subwindows without introducing serious visual quality degradation in the inactive ones, but also reduce the computational complexity and avoid whole-frame skipping. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is fully compatible with the H.263 video coding standard. 1

    An Efficient Wireless Recharging Mechanism for Achieving Perpetual Lifetime of Wireless Sensor Networks

    [[abstract]]Energy recharging has received much attention in recent years. Several recharging mechanisms were proposed for achieving perpetual lifetime of a given Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). However, most of them require a mobile recharger to visit each sensor and then perform the recharging task, which increases the length of the recharging path. Another common weakness of these works is the requirement for the mobile recharger to stop at the location of each sensor. As a result, it is impossible for recharger to move with a constant speed, leading to inefficient movement. To improve the recharging efficiency, this paper takes “recharging while moving” into consideration when constructing the recharging path. We propose a Recharging Path Construction (RPC) mechanism, which enables the mobile recharger to recharge all sensors using a constant speed, aiming to minimize the length of recharging path and improve the recharging efficiency while achieving the requirement of perpetual network lifetime of a given WSN.     Zero-shot Domain-sensitive Speech Recognition with Prompt-conditioning Fine-tuning

    In this work, we propose a method to create domain-sensitive speech recognition models that utilize textual domain information by conditioning its generation on a given text prompt. This is accomplished by fine-tuning a pre-trained, end-to-end model (Whisper) to learn from demonstrations with prompt examples. We show that this ability can be generalized to different domains and even various prompt contexts, with our model gaining a Word Error Rate (WER) reduction of up to 33% on unseen datasets from various domains, such as medical conversation, air traffic control communication, and financial meetings. Considering the limited availability of audio-transcript pair data, we further extend our method to text-only fine-tuning to achieve domain sensitivity as well as domain adaptation. We demonstrate that our text-only fine-tuned model can also attend to various prompt contexts, with the model reaching the most WER reduction of 29% on the medical conversation dataset.Comment: F-T Liao and Y-C Chan contributed equall

    Twin-Free GaAs Nanosheets by Selective Area Growth: Implications for Defect-Free Nanostructures

    Highly perfect, twin-free GaAs nanosheets grown on (111)B surfaces by selective area growth (SAG) are demonstrated. In contrast to GaAs nanowires grown by (SAG) in which rotational twins and stacking faults are almost universally observed, twin formation is either suppressed or eliminated within properly oriented nanosheets are grown under a range of growth conditions. A morphology transition in the nanosheets due to twinning results in surface energy reduction, which may also explain the high twin-defect density that occurs within some III–V semiconductor nanostructures, such as GaAs nanowires. Calculations suggest that the surface energy is significantly reduced by the formation of {111}-plane bounded tetrahedra after the morphology transition of nanowire structures. By contrast, owing to the formation of two vertical {11̅0} planes which comprise the majority of the total surface energy of nanosheet structures, the energy reduction effect due to the morphology transition is not as dramatic as that for nanowire structures. Furthermore, the surface energy reduction effect is mitigated in longer nanosheets which, in turn, suppresses twinning
