Shipping the good apples out: a note on contributions of time and money

This note applies insights from a famous problem in price theory, "Shipping the Good Apples Out," to expand the comparative static predictions of the model of monetary donations and volunteering developed by Andreoni, Gale and Scotz (1996). we show that the Hicksian supply of volunteering may be an increasing function of the wage, if volunteering is strongly complementary to either donations or consumption. It is also possible for government charity to crowd-in private contributions.

Exchange Rate Determination from Monetary Fundamentals: an Aggregation Theoretic Approach

We incorporate aggregation and index number theory into monetary models of exchange rate determination in a manner that is internally consistent with money market equilibrium. Divisia monetary aggregates and user-cost concepts are used for money supply and opportunity-cost variables in the monetary models. We estimate a flexible price monetary model, a sticky price monetary model, and the Hooper and Morton (1982) model for the US dollar/UK pound exchange rate. We compare forecast results using mean square error, direction of change, and Diebold-Mariano statistics. We find that models with Divisia indexes are better than the random walk assumption in explaining the exchange rate fluctuations. Representation Theoretical Methods in Image Processing

Image processing refers to the various operations performed on pictures that are digitally stored as an aggregate of pixels. One can enhance or degrade the quality of an image, artistically transform the image, or even find or recognize objects within the image. This paper is concerned with image processing, but in a very mathematical perspective, involving representation theory. The approach traces back to Cooley and Tukey’s seminal paper on the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm (1965). Recently, there has been a resurgence in investigating algebraic generalizations of this original algorithm with respect to different symmetry groups. My approach in the following chapters is as follows. First, I will give necessary tools from representation theory to explain how to generalize the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). Second, I will introduce wreath products and their application to images. Third, I will show some results from applying some elementary filters and compression methods to spectrums of images. Fourth, I will attempt to generalize my method to noncyclic wreath product transforms and apply it to images and three-dimensional geometries

Examining AWB’s market power in the international wheat market

The Australian wheat marketing system has been through a number of stages of deregulation in recent years. However, the AWB still maintains the monopoly selling rights of Australian wheat exports. The AWB and its supporters justify the single desk by arguing that the monopoly power enables them to gain a higher price in the export markets. Opposition to the single desk argues that Australia does not produce enough wheat to influence prices. One-Shot Relational Learning for Knowledge Graphs

Knowledge graphs (KGs) are the key components of various natural language processing applications. To further expand KGs' coverage, previous studies on knowledge graph completion usually require a large number of training instances for each relation. However, we observe that long-tail relations are actually more common in KGs and those newly added relations often do not have many known triples for training. In this work, we aim at predicting new facts under a challenging setting where only one training instance is available. We propose a one-shot relational learning framework, which utilizes the knowledge extracted by embedding models and learns a matching metric by considering both the learned embeddings and one-hop graph structures. Empirically, our model yields considerable performance improvements over existing embedding models, and also eliminates the need of re-training the embedding models when dealing with newly added relations.Comment: EMNLP 201
