    Fast eigenspace decomposition of correlated images

    Includes bibliographical references.We present a computationally efficient algorithm for the eigenspace decomposition of correlated images. Our approach is motivated by the fact that for a planar rotation of a two-dimensional image, analytical expressions can be given for the eigendecomposition, based on the theory of circulant matrices. These analytical expressions turn out to be good first approximations of the eigendecomposition, even for three-dimensional objects rotated about a single axis. We use this observation to automatically determine the dimension of the subspace required to represent an image with a guaranteed user-specified accuracy, as well as to quickly compute a basis for the subspace. Examples show that the algorithm performs very well on a range of test images composed of three-dimensional objects rotated about a single axis.This work was supported by the Sze Tsao Chang Memorial Engineering Fund and by the Office of Naval Research under contract no.     Isolated chondrons: a viable alternative for studies of chondrocyte metabolism in vitro

    OBJECTIVE: To develop and test a simple enzymatic procedure for isolating chondrons, which consist of the chondrocytes and their surrounding pericellular microenvironment. DESIGN: Chondrons were obtained by digesting adult human articular cartilage with a mixture of dispase and collagenase. Chondrons and chondrocytes were cultured in alginate beads, immunofluorescence labeled and examined by confocal microscopy. RESULTS: Comparison of freshly isolated chondrons with cryostat sections of cartilage revealed that type VI collagen, type II collagen and aggrecan were retained, but fibronectin and a unique chondroitin sulfate epitope recognized by the antibody, 7D4, were lost. Comparison of enzymatic and mechanical homogenization methods revealed subtle changes in chondron morphology and retention of fibronectin in mechanically isolated chondrons. Average yield of enzyme-isolated chondrons was slightly lower than that of chondrocytes isolated by pronase and collagenase digestion, but was much greater than that reported for mechanically isolated chondrons. Enzyme-isolated chondron viability was greater than 80% 1 day after isolation, and continued to be above 80% through 7 weeks of alginate bead culture. Viability of isolated chondrocytes was initially greater than 80% but fell to 60-80% with time in culture. Chondrons and isolated chondrocytes had a similar division rate except osteoarthritic chondrons were significantly slower after 2 weeks in culture. Cell division was more rapid for nonosteoarthritic chondrons than for osteoarthritic ones. CONCLUSIONS: Enzymatic isolation of chondrons is relatively simple, gives better yield and viability than mechanical isolation, but comparable yield and viability of traditional chondrocyte isolation.     With the growth in Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (AIM) research and the plethora of informatics journals, there is some confusion where to direct an AIM-related manuscript for peer review and possible pub- lication. As editors for three Elsevier biomedical informatics journals that publish AI-related papers, plus the publisher who oversees all three of these journals, we are aware of such confusion and felt it would be helpful to provide some guidance to prospective authors. Accordingly, we present this joint editorial that is being published in all three of our journals. Although there is some overlap among the types of papers that we publish, we offer here some advice on how best to select a preferred publication venue for your medical AI research papers

    PEER Testbed Study on a Laboratory Building: Exercising Seismic Performance Assessment

    From 2002 to 2004 (years five and six of a ten-year funding cycle), the PEER Center organized the majority of its research around six testbeds. Two buildings and two bridges, a campus, and a transportation network were selected as case studies to “exercise” the PEER performance-based earthquake engineering methodology. All projects involved interdisciplinary teams of researchers, each producing data to be used by other colleagues in their research. The testbeds demonstrated that it is possible to create the data necessary to populate the PEER performancebased framing equation, linking the hazard analysis, the structural analysis, the development of damage measures, loss analysis, and decision variables. This report describes one of the building testbeds—the UC Science Building. The project was chosen to focus attention on the consequences of losses of laboratory contents, particularly downtime. The UC Science testbed evaluated the earthquake hazard and the structural performance of a well-designed recently built reinforced concrete laboratory building using the OpenSees platform. Researchers conducted shake table tests on samples of critical laboratory contents in order to develop fragility curves used to analyze the probability of losses based on equipment failure. The UC Science testbed undertook an extreme case in performance assessment—linking performance of contents to operational failure. The research shows the interdependence of building structure, systems, and contents in performance assessment, and highlights where further research is needed. The Executive Summary provides a short description of the overall testbed research program, while the main body of the report includes summary chapters from individual researchers.     Accuracy of prospective two-dimensional/Doppler echocardiography in the assessment of reparative surgery

    Between January 1987 and January 1989, all 129 patients (aged 11 days to 25 years, median 39 months) undergoing both an echocardiographic examination and cardiac catheterization after reparative surgery were prospectively included in a study to assess the accuracy of combined two-dimensional and Doppler color flow imaging. The patient diagnoses were transposition of the great arteries (n = 20), tetralogy of Fallot (n = 38), coarctation of the aorta (n = 24), complete atrioventricular (AV) canal (n = 15), atrial septal defect (n = 8), ventricular septal defects (n = 3), pulmonary stenosis (n = 4), aortic stenosis (n = 8) and subaortic stenosis (n = 9).In arterial tract stenosis, there was high correlation between Doppler estimates and catheterization-derived measurements of residual right ventricular outflow tract obstruction in patients after the arterial switch operation for transposition of the great arteries (r = 0.95) as well as in patients after corrective repair of tetralogy of Fallot (r = 0.84).In semilunar/AV valve regurgitation, graded as none, mild, moderate or severe, echocardiographic estimates correlated exactly with angiographic grading in 84% and differed by one angiographic grade in the other 16%.In residual left to right shunting, no hemodynamically significant shunt was missed by echocardiography. For residual shunts at the ventricular level (n = 32), addition of Doppler color flow imaging improved the sensitivity (from 63% to 94%) and the negative predictive value (from 88% to 98%).In elevated right ventricular pressure, Doppler-derived right ventricular-right atrial pressure estimates in 24 patients correlated well with catheterization measurements (r = 0.93).Combined two-dimensional and Doppler color flow echocardiography was highly accurate in the prospective evaluation of these four types of postoperative residua

    Spanning tree generating functions and Mahler measures

    We define the notion of a spanning tree generating function (STGF) anzn\sum a_n z^n, which gives the spanning tree constant when evaluated at z=1,z=1, and gives the lattice Green function (LGF) when differentiated. By making use of known results for logarithmic Mahler measures of certain Laurent polynomials, and proving new results, we express the STGFs as hypergeometric functions for all regular two and three dimensional lattices (and one higher-dimensional lattice). This gives closed form expressions for the spanning tree constants for all such lattices, which were previously largely unknown in all but one three-dimensional case. We show for all lattices that these can also be represented as Dirichlet LL-series. Making the connection between spanning tree generating functions and lattice Green functions produces integral identities and hypergeometric connections, some of which appear to be new.Comment: 26 pages.
