    Get PDF
The remote access platform plays a major role in facilitating the off-campus access to e-resources. A library which does not have remote access platform to e-resources, is missing the opportunity to provide the off-campus access which intern usually affects the patrons negatively in terms of accessing the needed e-resources. It is quite difficult to select the suitable platform for the same purpose. Therefore, authors have made an attempt to compare and analyse the content of the RAP (Remote Access Platform) and suggest the suitable one for the academic library. Here authors have selected 5 items for the comparison and they found that all are more or less similar in terms of containing advanced features. Overall, the Knimbus Digital Library is best remote access platform compare to others to implement in the academic libraries

Purpose-The study aims to analyse the resources used in the citations of 571 research publications of University of Mysore and Karnatak University in the field of physics and prepares the list of core journal, leading publishers and prolific authors. For any research and academic institutional libraries, books and journals are considered as key resources. As the resources are more and diverse, collection building is a tough task for librarians. Citation analysis is one of the best methods to list the most used resources by the users. The paper highlights the extent of use of different sources in the research publications of chemistry. Also the obsolescence of cited literature was examined in the study. Methodology- The main data source for this study is the references appended in the scholarly communications (only journal articles were taken in to consideration) of physics of University of Mysore and Kartnak University. Data consists of 17474 citations from 571 scholarly communications covered by Web of Science during 2009-2018. All these references were recorded on a specified data capturing sheet designed using MS Excel. Datasheet contained the reference data like bibliographical form, publication year, journal title, publisher and publication year of scholarly communications. Age of individual journal citations was ascertained by subtracting the year of publication of reference from the year of publication of citing article. The list of core journals was prepared on the basis of highly cited articles of journals in Physics. Findings- study shows that multi-authored (83.38%) sources constitute highest number of citations and 89.57% citations were from journals followed by books 6.21%. The country-wise break up of citations uncovers that USA stands first in the rank list with 6846 (39.18%) citations. United Kingdom and Netherlands occupy second and third rank respectively. Originality/Value- Information presented in the study provides insight in to the citation pattern of Physics literature. Data obtained in this study will help the libraries of University of Mysore and Karnatak University in collection building

Role of semantics ontologies on modern educational systems

The author describes his experience with students interacting with some websites he made for didactics and how this led him to an appreciation for the need for better searching tools and strategies for education. The students’ difficulties emerging from the above observations were a special case of the more general problem evidenced from people while searching information on the web. Semantic web is then discussed as a way to help people overcome their difficulties in using the web to gain knowledge. The paper describes some models for knowledge construction and analyzes them in terms of their suitability as instruments for the introduction of semantics on the web. The paper then provides evidence regarding some limits for the systematic use of semantic search engine and ontology domain systems in everyday teaching and knowledge construction. Finally, the paper reports and explains a hypothesis of an information system for building communities of practice and letting them work on the construction of domain ontology. The paper concludes that this construct is well adapted to the model for knowledge construction firstly hypothesized, and can give good results in teaching-learning planning and carrying out and in helping scientists and scholars to analyze scientific paradigms and to find new trends for research

Purpose-The study aims to analyse the resources used in the citations of 1365 research publications of University of Mysore and Karnatak University in the field of chemistry and prepares the core journal list and prolific authors. For any research and academic institutional libraries, books and journals are considered as key resources. As the resources are more and diverse, collection building is a tough task for librarians. Citation analysis is one of the best methods to list the most used resources by the users. The paper highlights the extent of use of different sources in the research publications of chemistry Methodology-References of Chemistry research publications covered by Web of Science during 2009-2018 were the main data source for the study. Compiled references were recorded in the Ms Excel sheet for the analysis of bibliographic form, authorship pattern, country-wise citation and ranking of journals, publishers and authors. Ranking list was prepared on the basis of highest citations and place of journal publication was collected from the Scimago Journal Rank. Findings- Study witnesses the use of various information sources in research publications. Source wise distribution of citations shows the highest journal literature use in the study which accounts for 89.98% of overall citations. Results indicate that literature published by western countries were greatly cited. USA, United Kingdom and Netherlands top the list of country wise citations with 33.69%, 27.14% and 18.83% respectively. It is observed that majority of cited journal sources were by three authors (19.97%) followed by two authors (18.90%) and four authors (16.31%). Journal articles authored by single authors were cited to an extent of 9.29% and a small percent of journal articles were authored by eight authors (2.88%). Further, Rank list of publishers shows that journals (32.35% of overall journal citation) published by Elsevier were profoundly preferred by the chemistry research publications

Teachers play a dynamic role in upbringing students in academics as well as for living successfully in today’s complex and challenging information society. But certified librarians’ play a more diverse role in student\u27s life, among which is to support their well-being and help teachers leverage the power of technology in the classroom strategically and with purpose. The present paper attempted to study how teachers utilize the school library and other sources of information that inspire and motivate students to knowledge-based information technology-driven society. This study identified that a professional librarian is effective and library orientation programs support teachers in adopting a broad range of teaching strategies. The questionnaire method was employed to achieve the objectives of the study and 300 questionnaires were distributed among secondary school teachers in Mysore Block on a simple random basis for collecting relevant data. 276 teachers responded to the questionnaire. Inquiry into the teacher’s perception and experiences for a library orientation or an entry-level library instruction class discovered that learning library skills toolkit would allow them to become more comfortable with library spaces and helps them reach the goal of solving a digital treasure box. It has been found that teachers who showed enthusiasm towards collaboration with a certified librarian can create a student’s intrinsic motivation to learn and vitality in the classroom

This study aims to find out the association between delayed gratification in information seeking behavior of research scholars and the challenges during the process of research. Also, determining how the research scholars face the challenges of the research work. The survey was adopted for data collection through a questionnaire. The sample population of the study is research scholars of three universities in Karnataka (India). The finding of the study indicates that the maximum reported challenge by research scholars during the research process belongs to data collection and the statistical analysis of the data. The minimum challenge belongs to designing the tables and selection of the topic. To find a solution to the challenges, 40 percent of the research scholars declared that they would consult with the guide to get the solution. There is a significant relationship between research challenges including finding the new resources, developing measurement tools, statistical analysis of the data, designing the tables and the dimension of delayed gratification in information seeking behavior

Gap phase regeneration of tree species of differing successional status in a humid tropical forest of Kerala, India

Germination, establishment and growth of seedlings of tree species Palaquium ellipticum (primary), Actinodaphne malabarica (late secondary) and Macaranga peltata (early secondary) were studied in a humid tropical forest at Nelliampathy, in the Western Ghats of Kerala. While the primary species completed its germination within a brief period of 1.5 months, at the other extreme, early secondary species showed slow germination extending for about 5 months, the late secondary species falling in between. Although, all the species studied showed higher establishment and growth under gaps, the early secondary species were more responsive compared to the primary species. Primary species showed better establishment in undisturbed sites and natural gaps than under selection felled gaps; the reverse was true for late and early secondary species. Survival of seedlings increased with gap size, but sharply declined with gap age. Shoot/root ratio was consistently higher in the early secondary species than in the primary species
