Coupled length scales in eroding landscapes

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, 1999.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 75-76).We propose a method to study natural topography by means of local transform. A nonlinear local transform Alc[h(x)] of the elevation field h(x) is used to determine a director field of anisotropy a(x). The director field is directly related to local small-scale channel-like features. From study of the correlations of these with large-scale structure of drainage basins, characteristic coupling length scales are found which indicate an important breaking of scale invariance. We also show that these length scales are related to the average sizes of the individual drainage basins. Our study demonstrates one way in which landscape patterns of unknown origin may be quantitatively analyzed to determine the kind of mechanisms that have eroded them.by Kelvin Ka Wing Chan.S.M

A Framework for Self-healing Smart Grid with Incorporation of Multi-Agents

AbstractA hierarchical framework incorporated with multi-agents is proposed for enabling the self-healing of smart grid. While the central control agent in the upper layer adopts the multiple-step Taylor series function (MTSF) method to efficiently predict the system stability using wide area measurement system (WAMS) data, agents with shared information in the lower layer protect the devices in plug-in micro grids more effectively and adaptively compared with traditional protection. The proposed framework shows the self-healing capability for ensuring the security of smart grid by reliably preventing faults and flexibly coordinating generations. Simulation results of modified WSCC 3-generator system with plug-in micro grids have confirmed the validity of the proposed framework

Use of switching barriers to retain customers: Online retail stock traders in Hong Kong

Why some customers decide to stay withexisting service provider after having thought of switchinghas apparently not been examined adequately in extantresearch. The purpose of this research is to identifyfactors relevant to building constructs to representswitching barriers in online retail stock trading industryin Hong Kong. Review of extant literature, development ofa questionnaire and focus group interviews are the threeprincipal methods used for this research. Four factors thatare relevant for measuring switching barriers areidentified: two positive barriers involve service recoveryand trust and two negative barriers relate to higherswitching costs and lack of attractive alternatives

Service-learning impact on community engagement : from the graduates\u27 perspectives

Service-Learning (S-L) is pedagogy that has been newly introduced into Hong Kong\u27s higher education institutes. Thus, most local, recent studies focus on implication and evaluation of the S-L program for the existing students. There is lack of study about the long-term impact of S-L, especially for graduate students. Lingnan University (LU) as the only liberal art university in Hong Kong, aims to equip LU students with whole person development skills, as well as the capability to serve the community in the future. The Office of Service-Learning (OSL) was established in 2006 to promote S-L in Lingnan, echoing the university\u27s motto Education for Service. A study was conducted in 2011 to investigate the long-term impact of S-L on graduates\u27 whole person development skills, community engagement and career exploration. In this paper, we will focus on investigating the long-term impact of S-L on graduates\u27 community engagement (measured by civic responsibility) in terms of three subdomains: connection to community, civic awareness and civic efficacy. The comparison result between 424 graduates with S-L experience and 345 graduates without S-L experience will be used in this paper. The most prominent finding shows that graduates with S-L experience had significant higher scores than graduates without S-L experience in civic responsibility (Mwith S-L experience=5.80, SD=1.20; Mwithout S-L experience=5.16, SD=1.47; t=6.57,

The Strengths Model in Hong Kong

Mental health practice involves the continuous process of learning and refinement, especially when practitioners focus on the strengths and aspirations of individuals who are coping with serious mental illnesses (Tse et al., 2016). Cross-cultural considerations include beliefs, language, the role of social support, and the distinctive characteristics of specific communities that require localization in designing and offering mental health services. In this chapter, we describe the experience of adopting the Strengths Model in Hong Kong, starting with an introduction to the mental health system in the city. We then illustrate the development and implementation of the Strengths Model for the Chinese population in Hong Kong. We also briefly review research studies focusing on the Strengths Model in mental health practice in this cultural context (Tsoi et al., 2018; Tsoi, Tse, Canda, & Lo, 2019; Tse et al., 2019). The process of localization described in this chapter required the building of complex relationships among Strengths Model founders, scholars, organizations, caseworkers, and people facing mental health challenges
