Shaping the strategy for e-books: A Hong Kong perspective
The shift in the production of books to a combination of paper and electronic versions means that librarians need to carefully consider the economics of e-book models together with user preferences to acquire the appropriate balance of electronic resources versus the printed formats. This paper examines the business models of four e-book aggregators and the factors affecting collection development decisions, such as usefulness of contents, pricing structure, access model, retention policy, and functionalities. Results from the usage of netLibrary are included in the analysis to determine the extent to which e-books are needed to complement print collections. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. Perinatal Gene Transfer to the Liver
The liver acts as a host to many functions hence raising the possibility that any one may be compromised by a single gene defect.
Inherited or de novo mutations in these genes may result in relatively mild diseases or be so devastating that death within the first
weeks or months of life is inevitable. Some diseases can be managed using conventional medicines whereas others are, as yet, untreatable.
In this review we consider the application of early intervention gene therapy in neonatal and fetal preclinical studies. We appraise
the tools of this technology, including lentivirus, adenovirus and adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based vectors. We highlight the application
of these for a range of diseases including hemophilia, urea cycle disorders such as ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency, organic
acidemias, lysosomal storage diseases including mucopolysaccharidoses, glycogen storage diseases and bile metabolism. We conclude by
assessing the advantages and disadvantages associated with fetal and neonatal liver gene transfer
Is fundamental frequency a cue to aspiration in initial stops?
One production and one perception experiment were conducted to investigate the interaction of consonant voicing and fundamental frequency at the onset of voicing (onset f0) in Cantonese, a tonal language. Consonantal voicing in English can affect onset f0 up to 100 ms after voicing onset, but existing research provides inconclusive information regarding the effects of voicing on f0 in tonal languages where f0 variability is constrained by the demands of the lexical tone system. Previous research on consonantal effects on onset f0 provides two contrasting theories: These effects may be automatic, resulting from physiological constraints inherent to the speech production mechanism or they may be controlled, produced as part of a process of cue enhancement for the perception of laryngeal contrasts. Results of experiment 1 showed that consonant aspiration affects onset f0 in Cantonese only within the first 10 ms following voicing onset, comparable to results for other tonal languages. Experiment 2 showed that Cantonese listeners can use differences in onset f0 to cue perception of the voicing contrast, but the minimum extent of f0 perturbation necessary for this is greater than is found in Cantonese production, and comparable to that observed in acoustic studies of nontonal languages. These results suggest that consonantal effects on onset f0 are at least partially controlled by talkers, but that their role in the perception of voicing/aspiration may be a consequence of language independent properties of audition rather than listeners' experience with the phonological contrasts of a specific language.published_or_final_versio
Improve the performance of transfer learning without fine-tuning using dissimilarity-based multi-view learning for breast cancer histology images
Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer and leading
cancer-related death causes for women. In the context of ICIAR 2018 Grand
Challenge on Breast Cancer Histology Images, we compare one handcrafted feature
extractor and five transfer learning feature extractors based on deep learning.
We find out that the deep learning networks pretrained on ImageNet have better
performance than the popular handcrafted features used for breast cancer
histology images. The best feature extractor achieves an average accuracy of
79.30%. To improve the classification performance, a random forest
dissimilarity based integration method is used to combine different feature
groups together. When the five deep learning feature groups are combined, the
average accuracy is improved to 82.90% (best accuracy 85.00%). When handcrafted
features are combined with the five deep learning feature groups, the average
accuracy is improved to 87.10% (best accuracy 93.00%)
Balancing the equation: a natural history of trimethylamine and trimethylamine-N-oxide.
Trimethylamine (TMA) and its N-oxide (TMAO) are ubiquitous in prokaryote and eukaryote organisms as well as in the environment, reflecting their fundamental importance in evolutionary biology, and their diverse biochemical functions. Both metabolites have multiple biological roles including cell-signaling. Much attention has focused on the significance of serum and urinary TMAO in cardiovascular disease risk, yet this is only one of the many facets of a deeper TMA-TMAO partnership that reflects the significance of these metabolites in multiple biological processes spanning animals, plants, bacteria, and fungi. We report on analytical methods for measuring TMA and TMAO and attempt to critically synthesize and map the global functions of TMA and TMAO in a systems biology framework

Multi-site evaluation of a computer aided detection (CAD) algorithm for small acute intra-cranial hemorrhage and development of a stand-alone CAD system ready for deployment in a clinical environment
Timely detection of Acute Intra-cranial Hemorrhage (AIH) in an emergency environment is essential for the triage of patients suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury. Moreover, the small size of lesions and lack of experience on the reader's part could lead to difficulties in the detection of AIH. A CT based CAD algorithm for the detection of AIH has been developed in order to improve upon the current standard of identification and treatment of AIH. A retrospective analysis of the algorithm has already been carried out with 135 AIH CT studies with 135 matched normal head CT studies from the Los Angeles County General Hospital/ University of Southern California Hospital System (LAC/USC). In the next step, AIH studies have been collected from Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and are currently being processed using the AIH CAD system as part of implementing a multi-site assessment and evaluation of the performance of the algorithm. The sensitivity and specificity numbers from the Walter Reed study will be compared with the numbers from the LAC/USC study to determine if there are differences in the presentation and detection due to the difference in the nature of trauma between the two sites. Simultaneously, a stand-alone system with a user friendly GUI has been developed to facilitate implementation in a clinical setting. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.published_or_final_versio
