Synthesizing Action Sequences for Modifying Model Decisions
When a model makes a consequential decision, e.g., denying someone a loan, it
needs to additionally generate actionable, realistic feedback on what the
person can do to favorably change the decision. We cast this problem through
the lens of program synthesis, in which our goal is to synthesize an optimal
(realistically cheapest or simplest) sequence of actions that if a person
executes successfully can change their classification. We present a novel and
general approach that combines search-based program synthesis and test-time
adversarial attacks to construct action sequences over a domain-specific set of
actions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on a number of deep
neural networks

Comprehension of Subject and Object Relative Clauses in a Trilingual Acquisition Context
Chinese relative clauses (RCs) have word order properties that are distinctly rare across languages of the world; such properties provide a good testing ground to tease apart predictions regarding the relative complexity of subject and object RCs in acquisition and processing. This study considers these special word order properties in a multilingual acquisition context, examining how Cantonese(L1)-English(L2)-Mandarin(L3) trilingual children process RCs in two Chinese languages differing in exposure conditions. Studying in an English immersion international school, these trilinguals are also under intensive exposure to English. Comparisons of the trilinguals with their monolingual counterparts are made with a focus on the directionality of cross-linguistic influence. The study considers how various factors such as language exposure, structural overlaps in the target languages, typological distance, and language dominance can account for the linguistic abilities and vulnerabilities exhibited by a group of children in a trilingual acquisition context. Twenty-one trilingual 5- to 6-year-olds completed tests of subject- and object- RC comprehension in all three languages. Twenty-four age-matched Cantonese monolinguals and 24 age-matched Mandarin monolinguals served as comparison groups. Despite limited exposure to Mandarin, the trilinguals performed comparable to the monolinguals. Their Cantonese performance uniquely predicts their Mandarin performance, suggesting positive transfer from L1 Cantonese to L3 Mandarin. In Cantonese, however, despite extensive exposure from birth, the trilinguals comprehended object RCs significantly worse than the monolinguals. Error analyses suggested an English-based head-initial analysis, implying negative transfer from L2 English to L1 Cantonese. Overall, we identified a specific case of bi-directional influence between the first and second/third languages. The trilinguals experience facilitation in processing Mandarin RCs, because parallels and overlaps in both form and function provide a transparent basis for positive transfer from L1 Cantonese to L3 Mandarin. On the other hand, they experience more difficulty in processing object RCs in Cantonese compared to their monolingual peers, because structural overlaps with competing structures from English plus intensive exposure to English lead to negative transfer from L2 English to L1 Cantonese. The findings provide further evidence that head noun assignment in object RCs is especially vulnerable in multilingual Cantonese children when they are under intensive exposure to English.published_or_final_versio
Second order statistics based blind source separation for artifact correction of short ERP epochs
ERP is commonly obtained by averaging over segmented EEC epochs. In case artifacts are present in the raw EEC measurement, pre-processing is required to prevent the averaged ERP waveform being interfered by artifacts. The simplest pre-processing approach is by rejecting trials in which presence of artifact is detected. Alternatively artifact correction instead of rejection can be performed by blind source separation, so that waste of ERP trials is avoided. In this paper, we propose a second order statistics based blind source separation approach to ERP artifact correction. Comparing with blind separation using independent component analysis, second order statistics based method does not rely on higher order statistics or signal entropy, and therefore leads to more robust separation even if only short epochs are available.published_or_final_versio
Age-related differences in neural activities during risk taking as revealed by functional MRI
Previous research has clearly documented that risky decision making is different in young and older adults. Yet, there has been a relative dearth of research that seeks to understand such age-related changes in the neural activities associated with risk taking. To address this research issue, 21 men (12 young men, mean age 29.9±6.2 years and 9 older men, mean age 65.2±4.2 years) performed a risky-gains task while their brain activities were monitored by an fMRI scanner. The older adults, relative to their younger peers, presented with contralateral prefrontal activity, particularly at the orbitofrontal cortex. Furthermore, stronger activation of the right insula was observed for the older-aged participants compared to the younger-aged adults. The findings of this study are consistent with the a priori speculations established in accordance with the HAROLD model as well as previous findings. Findings of this study suggest that when making risky decisions, there may be possible neuropsychological mechanisms underlying the change in impulsive and risk-taking behaviors during the course of natural ageing. © 2007 The Author(s).published_or_final_versio

“Just one animal among many?” Existential phenomenology, ethics, and stem cell research
Stem cell research and associated or derivative biotechnologies are proceeding at a pace that has left bioethics behind as a discipline that is more or less reactionary to their developments. Further, much of the available ethical deliberation remains determined by the conceptual framework of late modern metaphysics and the correlative ethical theories of utilitarianism and deontology. Lacking, to any meaningful extent, is a sustained engagement with ontological and epistemological critiques, such as with “postmodern” thinking like that of Heidegger’s existential phenomenology. Some basic “Heideggerian” conceptual strategies are reviewed here as a way of remedying this deficiency and adding to ethical deliberation about current stem cell research practices
