    Background: We recently identified a novel oncogene, Cancer-upregulated gene 2 (CUG2), which is essential for kinetochore formation and promotes tumorigenesis in mammalian cells. However, the in vivo function of CUG2 has not been studied in animal models. Results: To study the function of CUG2 in vivo, we isolated a zebrafish homologue that is expressed specifically in the proliferating cells of the central nervous system (CNS). Morpholino-mediated knockdown of cug2 resulted in apoptosis throughout the CNS and the development of neurodegenerative phenotypes. In addition, cug2-deficient embryos contained mitotically arrested cells displaying abnormal spindle formation and chromosome misalignment in the neural plate. Conclusions: Therefore, our findings suggest that Cug2 is required for normal mitosis during early neurogenesis and has functions in neuronal cell maintenance, thus demonstrating that the cug2 deficient embryos may provide a model system for human neurodegenerative disorders

    The association between back pain and trunk posture of workers in a special school for the severe handicaps

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The present study aims to determine the time spent in different static trunk postures during a typical working day of workers in a special school for the severe handicaps.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Eighteen workers with low back pain (LBP) and fifteen asymptomatic workers were recruited. A cross-sectional design was employed to study the time spent in different static trunk postures which was recorded by a biaxial accelerometer attached to the T<sub>12 </sub>level of the back of the subjects.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The results of ANCOVA revealed that subjects with LBP spent significantly longer percentage of time in static trunk posture when compared to normal (p < 0.05). It was also shown that they spent significantly longer time in trunk flexion for more than 10° (p < 0.0125).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>An innovative method has been developed for continuous tracking of spinal posture, and this has potential for widespread applications in the workplace. The findings of the present investigation suggest that teachers in special schools are at increased risk of getting LBP. In order to minimise such risk, frequent postural change and awareness of work posture are recommended.</p

    Three-Nucleon Force and the Δ\Delta-Mechanism for Pion Production and Pion Absorption

    The description of the three-nucleon system in terms of nucleon and Δ\Delta degrees of freedom is extended to allow for explicit pion production (absorption) from single dynamic Δ\Delta de-excitation (excitation) processes. This mechanism yields an energy dependent effective three-body hamiltonean. The Faddeev equations for the trinucleon bound state are solved with a force model that has already been tested in the two-nucleon system above pion-production threshold. The binding energy and other bound state properties are calculated. The contribution to the effective three-nucleon force arising from the pionic degrees of freedom is evaluated.     Parker Instability in a Self-Gravitating Magnetized Gas Disk: I. Linear Stability Analysis

    To be a formation mechanism of such large-scale structures as giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and HI superclouds, the classical Parker instability driven by external gravity has to overcome three major obstacles: The convective motion accompanying the instability generates thin sheets than large condensations. The degree of density enhancement achieved by the instability is too low to make dense interstellar clouds. The time and the length scales of the instability are significantly longer and larger than the estimated formation time and the observed mean separation of the GMCs, respectively. This paper examines whether a replacement of the driving agent from the external to the self gravity might remove these obstacles by activating the gravitational instability in the Galactic ISM disk. The self gravity can suppress the convective motions, and a cooperative action of the Jeans and the Parker instabilities can remove all the obstacles confronting the classical version of the Parker instability. The mass and mean separation of the structures resulting from the odd-parity undular mode solution are shown to agree better with the HI superclouds than with the GMCs. We briefly discuss how inclusions of the external gravity and cosmic rays would modify behaviors of the odd-parity undular mode solution.Comment: 53 pages, 21 figure

    Synchrotron x-ray study of lattice vibrations in CdCr2O4

    Using inelastic x-ray scattering we have investigated lattice vibrations in a geometric frustrated system CdCr2O4 that upon cooling undergoes a spin-Peierls phase transition at TN = 7.8 K from a cubic and paramagnetic to a tetragonal and Neel state. Phonon modes measured around Brillouin zone boundaries show energy shifts when the transition occurs. Our analysis shows that the shifting can be understood as the ordinary effects of the lowering of the crystal symmetry

    Patients' satisfaction and prevalence of complications on surgical extraction of third molar.

    OBJECTIVES: To study patients' satisfaction and prevalence of complications in surgical extraction of impacted third molar by senior dentists and recently graduated dentists in a university dental clinic. METHOD: Patients who had impacted third molar extraction in a university dental clinic by two associate dentists who had 15 years of experience were evaluated in this study. Patients' age, sex, history of pericoronitis, tooth extracted, and radiographic assessment of the impacted tooth were recorded. Immediately after suture removal, the patients were invited to indicate their satisfaction on a Likert scale of 1-5. RESULTS: A total of 546 patients received extraction, and 251 patients were operated by associate dentists. Patient satisfaction was higher among those who had noncomplicated surgery (P=0.007), short treatment time (P<0.001), and had no postsurgical emergency appointments (P<0.001). The prevalence of seeking postsurgical emergency appointments was 9.2%. The reasons were severe pain (4.8%), swelling (2.6%), bleeding (2.4%), alveolar osteitis (0.9%), paresthesia (0.9), and trismus (0.5%). The prevalence of postsurgical complication(s) in associate dentists and senior dentists was 11.6% and 7.1%, respectively (P=0.050). The mean satisfaction scores for associate dentists and senior dentists were 4.17 and 3.95, respectively (P=0.002). CONCLUSION: Although a higher rate of postsurgical complications was observed among the patients treated by the recently graduated dentists, their patients' satisfaction scores were higher than that of the senior dentists. Around 9% of patients attended postsurgical emergency appointments, and their common reason was severe pain.published_or_final_versio

    Tunable gigahertz dynamics of low-temperature skyrmion lattice in a chiral magnet

    Recently, it has been shown that the chiral magnetic insulator Cu2OSeO3hosts skyrmions in two separated pockets in temperature and magnetic field phase space. It has also been shown that the predominant stabilization mechanism for the low-temperature skyrmion (LTS) phase is via the crystalline anisotropy, opposed to temperature fluctuations that stabilize the well-established high-temperature skyrmion (HTS) phase. Here, we report on a detailed study of LTS generation by field cycling, probed by GHz spin dynamics in Cu2OSeO3. LTSs are populated via a field cycling protocol with the static magnetic field applied parallel to the ⟨100⟩ crystalline direction of plate and cuboid-shaped bulk crystals. By analyzing temperature-dependent broadband spectroscopy data, clear evidence of LTS excitations with clockwise (CW), counterclockwise (CCW), and breathing mode (BR) character at temperatures belowT= 40 K are shown. We find that the mode intensities can be tuned with the number of field-cycles below the saturation field. By tracking the resonance frequencies, we are able to map out the field-cycle-generated LTS phase diagram, from which we conclude that the LTS phase is distinctly separated from the high-temperature counterpart. We also study the mode hybridization between the dark CW and the BR modes as a function of temperature. By using two Cu2OSeO3crystals with different shapes and therefore different demagnetization factors, together with numerical calculations, we unambiguously show that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy plays a central role for the mode hybridization

    Hybrid desalination processes for beneficial use of reverse osmosis brine: Current status and future prospects

As water shortage has increasingly become a serious global problem, desalination using seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) is considered as a sustainable source of potable water sources. However, a major issue on the SWRO desalination plant is the generation of brine that has potential adverse impact due to its high salt concentration. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop technologies that allow environmentally friendly and economically viable management of SWRO brines. This paper gives an overview of recent research works and technologies to treat SWRO brines for its beneficial use. The treatment processes have been classified into two different groups according to their final purpose: 1) technologies for producing fresh water and 2) technologies for recovering energy. Topics in this paper includes membrane distillation (MD), forward osmosis (FO), pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO), reverse electrodialysis (RED) as emerging tools for beneficial use of SWRO brine. In addition, a new approach to simultaneously recover water and energy from SWRO brine is introduced as a case study to provide insight into improving the sustainability of seawater desalination
