Reconstructing depositional architecture and stratigraphy of coastal- to shallow-marine strata in a low-accommodation system: McMurray Formation, Alberta, Canada

A new and novel sedimentological-statistical approach is applied to Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation strata in the southwest quadrant of the McMurray depocenter to further comprehend the impact of accommodation space creation on the preserved record of coastal- to shallow-marine deposits in a low-accommodation setting. Across the study area, the McMurray Formation consists of discrete depositional units bounded by flooding surfaces and/or transgressive surfaces of erosion. The facies characteristics, depositional architecture and sequence stratigraphy of these depositional units are investigated, focused in the three main areas: quantitatively defining the controls on localized accommodation creation, recognizing new depositional units within the McMurray Formation, and quantifying and characterizing the speed of the Boreal Sea transgression. First, depositional architecture work tied to statistical analysis in the Sparrow Paleovalley (≈1/3 of the study area) reveals the local overthickening of +21% to +45% of the depositional units. The local accommodation space creation is demonstrated to have resulted from syndepositional epikarst subsidence within the underlying Devonian carbonates. Second, the detailed facies analysis and depositional architecture analysis of the Regional C depositional unit reveals a regionally extensive allogenic flooding surface (Top C2) dividing the Regional C depositional unit. Recognition of this new stratigraphic surface further reinforces the persistent and slow drowning of the McMurray depocenter during accumulation of the McMurray Fm, and that deposition occurred in a low-accommodation setting. Finally, detailed facies analysis, depositional architecture analysis, sequence stratigraphic work and statistical methods applied to the entire McMurray Formation across the study area reveals that the thicknesses of depositional units decrease markedly upward, and that this thickness decrease correlates to a change in the facies character of the transgressive mudstones underlying each depositional unit. Together, these data record the acceleration in the rate of the transgression of the Boreal Sea across the McMurray depocenter

Pinch-off of a viscous suspension thread

International audienceThe pinch-off of a capillary thread is studied at large Ohnesorge number for non-Brownian, neutrally buoyant, mono-disperse, rigid, spherical particles suspended in a Newtonian liquid with viscosity η 0 and surface tension σ. Reproducible pinch-off dynamics is obtained by letting a drop coalesce with a bath. The bridge shape and time evolution of the neck diameter, h min , are studied for varied particle size d, volume fraction φ and liquid contact angle θ. Two successive regimes are identified: (i) a first effective-viscous-fluid regime which only depends upon φ and (ii) a subsequent discrete regime, depending both on d and φ, in which the thinning localises at the neck and accelerates continuously. In the first regime, the suspension behaves as an effective viscous fluid and the dynamics is solely characterised by the effective viscosity of the suspension, η e ∼ −σ / ˙ h min , which agrees closely with the steady shear viscosity measured in a conventional rheometer and diverges as (φ c − φ) −2 at the same critical particle volume fraction, φ c. For φ 35 %, the thinning rate is found to increase by a factor of order one when the flow becomes purely extensional, suggesting non-Newtonian effects. The discrete regime is observed from a transition neck diameter, h min ≡ h * ∼ d (φ c − φ) −1/3 , down to h min ≈ d, where the thinning rate recovers the value obtained for the pure interstitial fluid, σ /η 0 , and lasts t * ∼ η e h * /σ

L’analyse du message audiovisuel de communication : quelques problèmes de méthode et de pédagogie

L'analyse d'un message publicitaire audiovisuel peut prendre différentes formes, elle peut se contenter d'une description formelle ou, en allant plus loin, tenter de comprendre les concepts sous-jacents aux images. Dans le cadre d'un enseignement en "Arts et Communication" l'auteur explique sa méthode d'analyse textuelle du message de communication. Il s'agit pour lui, d'un point de vue pédagogique, d'atténuer la division du travail entre création et conception et de faire comprendre aux étudiants les multiples aspects d'un message publicitaire en en faisant une analyse exhaustive. Pour ce faire il emprunte, à la fois, à l'analyse sémiologique (Barthes, Grande Syntagmatique de C. Metz) et à l'analyse cinématographique (Eisenstein, Bazin)

Christian Metz et la phénoménologie

Cet article examine la place qu’occupe la phénoménologie dans l’œuvre de Christian Metz, depuis ses premiers travaux jusqu’au Signifiant imaginaire. À partir d’une relecture des textes publiés et d’un examen d’inédits trouvés dans le fonds Christian Metz de la Cinémathèque française, les auteurs mettent au jour les déclinaisons et la progression de ce thème philosophique dans la pensée metzienne. La première partie examine comment les premiers travaux de Metz, sous l’influence de Mikel Dufrenne, s’inscrivent dans la longue tradition des écrits phénoménologique sur le cinéma tout en cherchant à aménager un espace pour son projet sémiologique. La deuxième examine le tournant « pan-sémiologique » de Metz suite à sa rencontre avec Umberto Eco en 1967, tournant qui renverse le rapport sémiologie / phénoménologie tel qu’il avait marqué ses premiers travaux. Enfin, la dernière montre comment, même à l’époque de son virage psychanalytique, Metz tient à conserver des liens étroits avec la phénoménologie. Dans des écrits non publiés, il ira même jusqu’à présenter le Signifiant imaginaire comme un travail de « phénoménologie psychanalytique ». Tout au long de l’article les auteurs s’interrogent sur la fonction épistémologique que joue la phénoménologie dans les diverses étapes de la réflexion metzienne.This articles examines the role played by phenomenology in the work of Christian Metz, from his first articles all the way to the Imaginary Signifier. Based on close readings of Metz published works and never before seen materials from the Metz archive at the Cinémathèque française, the authors painstakingly examine the twists and turns and the progression of this philosophical theme in Metz’s thinking. The argument is divided into three sections. The first part looks at how Metz, while under the influence of Mikel Dufrenne, subscribed to a long tradition of phenomenological writings on the cinema in France, all the while searching to develop a critical space for film semiology. The second part investigates how Metz, following his meeting with Umberto Eco in 1967, distanced himself from that tradition and adopted a new « pan-semiologism ». The final section looks at Metz’s psychoanalytical turn and how he still afforded a space for phenomenology. Indeed in some of his unpublished writings he characterized the Imaginary Signifier as a work of « psychoanalytical phenomenology ». De la caricatura de prensa extranjera al Museo Histórico Nacional. Algunos antecedentes históricos en torno a la polémica sobre la representación gráfica de Augusto Pinochet en el espacio público

This article argues that the controversy that arose regarding the mention of Augusto Pinochet in the 2018 Museo Histórico Nacional (Chile) exhibition cannot be understood without taking into account the international historically constructed image of the character since 1973. Relying on a corpus of press cartoons from various foreign written media, this paper explores how this image was built, and the existing and growing difficulties of showing Augusto Pinochet in the national public space. A diachronic and iconographic analysis allows us to demonstrate the gradual coincidence between the international negative image of Pinochet with the locally built representation.En este artículo se sostiene que la polémica surgida en torno a la mención a Augusto Pinochet en la muestra del Museo Histórico Nacional del año 2018, no se puede comprender sin tomar en cuenta la imagen internacional del personaje construida históricamente a partir de 1973. Para ello nos apoyamos en un corpus constituido por caricaturas de prensa provenientes de diversos medios escritos extranjeros. El objetivo principal es dar cuenta de cómo se fue construyendo dicha imagen y la dificultad creciente que existe en mostrar a Augusto Pinochet en el espacio público nacional. Para ello, se utilizará un análisis diacrónico e iconográfico. Esto nos permitirá demostrar la paulatina coincidencia que se ha producido entre la imagen negativa que existe sobre Pinochet fuera del país y aquella construida localmente

Les logiques d’examen au Conseil des bâtiments civils

Le Conseil des Bâtiments civils fut une institution entièrement dédiée à l’examen de l’architecture. Au fil de ses séances, ses membres formulaient des avis, à l’intention du ministre de l’Intérieur, sur tous les projets d’architecture publique projetés en France. À travers l’examen des projets architecturaux qui lui étaient soumis, le Conseil des Bâtiments civils exerçait, sinon une censure sur l’architecture publique, au moins une influence notable sur la nature architecturale des projets d’édifices qu’il révisait. La grande série continue des procès-verbaux des séances du Conseil des bâtiments civils de 1795 à 1848, conservée dans la sous-série F21 des Archives nationales de France, offre ainsi au chercheur une source sans équivalent non seulement pour l’étude de l’architecture publique mais aussi pour l’étude du jugement architectural. Cet article propose de s’intéresser au cœur même de la délibération du Conseil des bâtiments civils. Après avoir examiné la question des prérogatives du Conseil, il présente la procédure mise en œuvre par le Conseil pour l’examen des affaires afin de présenter quelques pistes méthodologiques pour aborder ce gigantesque matériau textuel dont l’étude permet d’envisager, à nouveaux frais, la question de l’éclectisme en architecture.The Conseil des bâtiments civils was an institution entirely dedicated to the examination of architecture. During its meetings, its members formulated opinions, for the Minister of the Interior, on all public architecture projects planned in France. Through the examination of the architectural projects submitted to it, the Council of Civil Buildings exercised, if not a censorship on public architecture, at least a notable influence on the architectural nature of the building projects that it revised. The procès-verbaux of the meetings of the Council of Civil Buildings from 1795 to 1848, preserved in the F21 sub-series of the National Archives of France, thus offers the researcher an unparalleled source not only for the study of the public architecture but also for the study of architectural judgment. This article proposes to examine the very heart of the deliberations of the Civil Building Council. After having examined the question of the prerogatives of the Council, it presents the procedure implemented by the Council for the examination of the cases in order to present some methodological ways to approach this gigantic textual material whose study makes it possible to envisage, with new expenses, the question of eclecticism in architecture.Der Conseil des bâtiments civils war eine ganz der Architekturprüfung gewidmete Institution. In den Sitzungen des Conseil formulierten seine Mitglieder Stellungnahmen für das Innenministerium über alle öffentlichen Bauvorhaben in Frankreich. Mit seiner Expertise zu den ihm vorgelegten architektonischen Projekten übte der Conseil des bâtiments civils eine wenn nicht als Zensur zu bezeichnende, so doch als entscheidendes Votum zu wertende Einflussnahme auf die architektonische Ausgestaltung des öffentlichen Bauens aus. Die vollständig in den Archives nationales de France unter der Signatur F21 bewahrten Bestände des Conseil des bâtiments civils von 1795 bis 1848 bieten der Forschung eine unvergleichliche Quelle nicht nur zum öffentlichen Bauen, sondern darüber hinaus zu architektonischen Gutachten. Dieser Beitrag möchte sich insbesondere mit den eigentlichen Verhandlungen des Conseil des bâtiments civils beschäftigen. Zunächst werden dabei die Vorrechte des Conseils betrachtet, anschließend wird das vom Conseil vollzogene Prüfungsverfahren erläutert, um darauf aufbauend methodische Ansätze zum Umgang mit dem umfangreichenden Textmaterial vorzustellen, die zu einer eingehenderen Untersuchung des architektonischen Eklektizismus beitragen können
