    Tettigoniidae (Orthoptera) ovipositing in old galls of Dryocosmus kuriphilus (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae)

    Authors report some biological notes on two species of Orthoptera Tettigoniidae emerged from old spongy-woody galls of Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu, 1951 collected in April 2015 from some areas of Sicily (Italy): Leptophyes sicula Kleukers, Od\ue9 et Fontana, 2010 (Phaneropterinae) and Cyrtaspis scutata (Charpentier, 1825) (Meconematinae). Between the end of April and the first days of May 30 neanids emerged from the galls, were reared and their cycle followed. While L. sicula laid eggs in groups, C. scutata laid single eggs inside the galls; both species have shown that in a few years they adapted in exploiting this new shelter for egg laying. No interaction with the gall inducing insect was noted

    Naturalization and spread of the alien species Ozognathus cornutus (LeConte, 1859) (Coleoptera: Ptinidae: Ernobiinae) in Italy

    Ozognathus cornutus (LeConte, 1859) (Coleoptera: Ptinidae: Ernobiinae), species native to North America, is a saproxylophagous species and is known to feed on decaying tissues within conspicuous galls and on vegetal decaying organic material such as dried fruits or small wood shavings and insect excrements in galleries made by other woodboring species. A few years after the first record in 2011, its naturalization in Italy is here reported. The insect was found as successor in galls of Psectrosema tamaricis (Diptera Cecidomyiidae), Plagiotrochus gallaeramulorum, Andricus multiplicatus and Synophrus politus (Hymenoptera Cynipidae). The galls seem to have played an important ecological role in speeding up the naturalization process. The lowest proportion of galls used by O. cornutus was recorded for P. tamaricis (23%), the only host belonging to Cecidomyiidae, while the percentages recorded for the other host species, all Cynipidae forming galls on oaks, were higher: 43.6%, 61.1% and 76.9% in A multiplicatus, S. politus and P. gallaeramulorum, respectively. Although O. cornutus is able to exploit other substrates like dried fruits and vegetables, for which it could represent a potential pest, it prefers to live as a successor in woody and conspicuous galls, which thus can represent a sort of natural barrier limiting the possible damages to other substrates

    FIRST RECORD IN EUROPE OF SEEDLINGS OF FICUS MACROPHYLLA F. COLUMNARIS (Moraceae) AND OF ITS POLLINATING WASP PLEISTODONTES CF. IMPERIALIS (Chalcidoidea Agaonidae)

    Since the first half of the nineteenth century, several Ficus species have been introduced into Italy as ornamental trees throughout urban gardens and along urban roads. Because a relationship with an agaonid wasp is essential for the pollination and consequently for the production of fertile seeds of Ficus spp., the seedlings of other introduced fig species (Ficus microcarpa L. f., Ficus rubiginosa Desf. ex Vent. and Ficus watkinsiana F.M. Bailey) weren’t found in Europe in conjunction with their pollinating wasps until more than a century after the figs’ introduction. This study presents the first recorded observation of Ficus macrophylla f. columnaris (C. Moore) D. J. Dixon seedlings in Europe. The seedlings grew from fertile seeds pollinated by the Agaonid Pleistodontes cf. imperialis. As no other F. macrophylla seedlings have been found in any of the other historical gardens of Palermo where this species is present in spite of the occurrence of mature figs fruits, it is possible that the cracks of the terrace filled with soil and organic material where the plantlets were found could have created favorable microclimatic conditions quite similar to those that characterize the native distri- bution areas of this species

    We demonstrated the life cycle closure of Cynips conifica Hartig, 1843 (presently Andricus conifi-cus), previously supposed on the basis of molecular data, and the identity of the sexual genera-tion, through laboratory experiments. As a consequence, Andricus cydoniae Giraud, 1859 became a junior synonym of A. conificus (Hartig, 1843). We provide illustrations and a diagnosis for adults and galls, observations on biology, and information on distribution. Moreover, as sexual galls of A. conificus cannot be distinguished from those of Andricus multiplicatus, a detailed com-parison between sexual galls and adults of these two species is reported

    An intelligent Medical Cyber-Physical System to support heart valve disease screening and diagnosis

    Cardiovascular diseases are currently the major causes of death globally. Among the strategies to prevent cardiovascular issues, the automated classification of heart sound abnormalities is an efficient way to detect early signs of cardiac conditions leading to heart failure or other, even asymptomatic, complications, quite effective for timely interventions. Despite the significant improvements in this field, there are still limitations due to the lack of solutions, available data-sets and poor (mainly binary - normal vs abnormal) classification models and algorithms. This paper presents a Medical Cyber-Physical System (MCPS) for the automatic classification of heart valve diseases onsite, in a timely manner. The proposed MCPS, indeed, can be deployed into personal and mobile devices, addressing the limitations of existing solutions for patients, healthcare practitioners, and researchers, through an efficient and easy accessible tool. It combines different neural network models trained on a new Italian dataset of 132 adult patients covering 9 heart sound categories (1 normal and 8 abnormal), also validated against two main open-access (Physionet/CinC Challenge 2016 and Korean) datasets. The overall MCPS performance (time, processing and energy resource utilization) and the high accuracy of the models (up to 98%) demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed solution, even with few data.     MAO A VNTR polymorphism and amygdala volume in healthy subjects

    The X-linked Monoamine Oxidase A (MAO A) gene presents a well known functional polymorphism consisting of a variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) (long and short variants) previously associated with altered neural function of the amygdala. Using automatic subcortical segmentation (Freesurfer), we investigated whether amygdala volume could be influenced by this genotype. We studied 109 healthy subjects (age range 18-80 years; 59 male and 50 female), 74 carrying the MAO A High-activity allele and 35 the MAO A Low-activity allele. No significant effect of the MAO A polymorphism or interaction effect between polymorphism Ă— gender was found on amygdalar volume. Thus, our findings suggest that the reported impact of the MAO A polymorphism on amygdala function is not coupled with consistent volumetric changes in healthy subjects. Future studies are needed to investigate whether the association between volume of the amygdala and the MAO A VNTR polymorphism is influenced by social/psychological variables, such as impulsivity, trauma history and cigarette smoking behaviour, not taken into account in this work

    Pain and agitation treatment in severe dementia patients: The need for Italian Mobilization-Observation-Behavior-Intensity-Dementia (I-MOBID2) pain scale translation, adaptation and validation with psychometric testing

    The 97% of dementia patients develops fluctuant neuropsychiatric symptoms often related to under-diagnosed and unrelieved pain. Up to 80% severe demented nursing home residents experiences chronic pain due to age-related comorbidities. Patients lacking self-report skills risk not to be appropriately treated for pain. Mobilization-Observation-Behavior-Intensity-Dementia (MOBID2) is the sole pain scale to consider the frequent co-occurrence of musculoskeletal and visceral pain and to unravel concealed pain through active guided movements. Accordingly, the Italian real-world setting can benefit from its translation and validation. This clinical study provides a translated, adapted and validated version of the MOBID2, the Italian I-MOBID2. The translation, adaptation and validation of the scale for non-verbal, severe demented patients was conducted according to current guidelines in a cohort of 11 patients over 65 with mini-mental state examination ≤ 12. The I-MOBID2 proves: good face and scale content validity index (0.89); reliable internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.751); good to excellent inter-rater (Intraclass correlation coefficient, and test-retest (ICC = 0.902) reliability. The construct validity is high (Rho = 0.748 p < 0.05 for 11 patients, Spearman rank order correlation of the overall pain intensity score with the maximum item score of I-MOBID2 Part 1; rho=0.895 p < 0.01 for 11 patients, for the overall pain intensity score with the maximum item score of I-MOBID2 Part 2) and a good rate of inter-rater and test-retest agreement was demonstrated by Cohen's K = 0.744. The average execution time is of 5.8 min, thus making I-MOBID2 a useful tool suitable also for future development in community setting with administration by caregivers

    Neurofunctional correlates of attention rehabilitation in Parkinson's disease: an explorative study

    The effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation (CR) in Parkinson's disease (PD) is in its relative infancy, and nowadays there is insufficient information to support evidence-based clinical protocols. This study is aimed at testing a validated therapeutic strategy characterized by intensive computer-based attention-training program tailored to attention deficits. We further investigated the presence of synaptic plasticity by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Using a randomized controlled study, we enrolled eight PD patients who underwent a CR program (Experimental group) and seven clinically/demographically-matched PD patients who underwent a placebo intervention (Control group). Brain activity was assessed using an 8-min resting state (RS) fMRI acquisition. Independent component analysis and statistical parametric mapping were used to assess the effect of CR on brain function. Significant effects were detected both at a phenotypic and at an intermediate phenotypic level. After CR, the Experimental group, in comparison with the Control group, showed a specific enhanced performance in cognitive performance as assessed by the SDMT and digit span forward. RS fMRI analysis for all networks revealed two significant groups (Experimental vs Control) Ă— time (T0 vs T1) interaction effects on the analysis of the attention (superior parietal cortex) and central executive neural networks (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex). We demonstrated that intensive CR tailored for the impaired abilities impacts neural plasticity and improves some aspects of cognitive deficits of PD patients.
