Bond…(the Hegemonic Masculinity Of) James Bond

    Get PDF
The mythology of James Bond is a pop culture phenomenon that is comparable to other such phenomena as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, collectively creating a diverse selection of genres and archetypes. What most separates James Bond from the other two, perhaps, is its distinctly (hyper) masculine nature. A more controversial element of this mythology, however, is the equally popular “Bond girls.” From less-than-subtle names such as Chew Mee and Pussy Galore, to Bond actually being violent to these girls in earlier films, to instances such as the masseuse Dink having to leave Bond and Felix Leiter because the latter two had to have “man’s talk”, the barrage of criticism of the patriarchal leanings of the James Bond series is understandable. A critical reading of the Ian Fleming brainchild, as translated and adapted in five films from the franchise, its more popular medium, will be the framework for this journal article. The theories of feminism (and its various schools of thought) and commodification (in view of its five main elements) will be used as supplements to the main methodology to be used in the study, i.e., multimodal critical discourse analysis. Visual and linguistic cues will be prioritized in the analysis, but other such semiotic cues of significance will be included, as seen fit by the authors. Ultimately, the study will attempt to point out that a change in the tone, a mellowing down of the patriarchy, so to speak, of the more contemporary James Bond films is not necessarily the once hypermasculine anthology adapting a feminist stance, striving for equality of the sexes, in terms of portrayal on film. Rather, it will be the aim of the study to conclude whether it is societal pressure (specifically of a society trying to embrace diversity) or the emergence of a new model of hegemonic masculinity influencing the said change in tone of the James Bond films

Marginally Better: My Husband’s Lover And Gay Portrayal

My Husband’s Lover is a Philippine telenovela that has garnered critical and commercial success (and along the way catapulting its two stars to A-list status), mainly due to a premise that heavily mirrors Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain (2005) but that which is unique to generally conservative Philippine society. Two high school best friends Eric Del Mundo (Dennis Trillo) and Vincent Soriano (Tom Rodriguez) also happen to be high school sweethearts, with the former leaving the latter.. Likewise, the latter’s family is the typical conservative Filipino family, so he decided to conceal his homosexuality for fear of being disowned. The two reunite years later, with Eric returning from the United States and learning that his former lover is engaged and is expecting a child with Lally Agatep (Carla Abellana). The series details the continuation of Vincent’s and Eric’s (still hidden) romance, and the former’s internal conflict, that between his true feelings and his morals. The dynamics of a love triangle peculiar to the average Filipino audience separate it from the typical Filipino romantic plotline, the portrayal of homosexuality being another Philippine TV trope that has been amply twisted so that it is “fresh.” Instead of the usual flamboyant gay best friend, the homosexuals are not only far from flamboyant, but are also the main characters of the series. Instead of being staples of beauty salons speaking in seeming code that is actually gay lingo, the homosexuals are affluent and well-spoken. The authors will buttress their textual analysis of all ten seasons of My Husband’s Lover with literature on the bakla and the global gay. With queer theory as the framework of the study, with emphasis on the theory’s element of performativity, the authors will also use several significant instances throughout the ten seasons of the series as premises to one of queer theory’s assumptions, that gender is fluid

#Trending: a reevaluation of traditional news values given twitter through a mixed methods approach

Over the years, social media have catered for faster and perhaps more efficient delivery of news. Twitter, one of the most popular micro-blogging sites, is now being used by journalists in spreading and gathering news. And since Twitter takes note of what topics are trending, journalists now have an idea on what their audience would like to know and talk about. However, topics trending on Twitter often do not reflect the dominant news values presented by the journalists in the traditional news media, thus creating a gap between the perceptions of the audience and of the journalist on what are considered to be newsworthy especially on Twitter. This also creates an impression that news and news values are evolving. This exploratory mixed methods research re-evaluates the traditional news values in the age of Twitter. It seeks to determine if such values have evolved and if they remain relevant for journalists in the delivery of news in this entirely new platform. Four news values were identified given a phenomenological approach employed in qualitative interviews. These identified news values were then tested using a survey (N=300) as structural equation modelling was employed to test if these four news values are correlated to newsworthiness, news consumption and news distribution. It was found that the traditional news values relevant in journalists' practice of news judgment and in audience' interaction on Twitter. This study contributes to discourses on news values which are currently being reviewed given how the Internet and social media have influenced journalism

This thesis explores public transportation planning in the Mexico City metropolitan area (MCMA) for empirical evidence to better understand what institutional, financial, and political conditions encourage and deter cooperative metropolitan governance. The MCMA, made up of several state-level jurisdictions, predominantly the Federal District (DF) and the State of Mexico (Edomex), continues to expand rapidly, surpassing their jurisdictional capacities and putting pressure on infrastructure like public transit, which carries almost two-thirds of daily traffic. Unhindered and even instigated by transportation and land use decisions, growth has spilled over from the historic downtown area, concentrated in the northern half of the DF, into Edomex, complicating the development, implementation, and enforcement of policies across the two jurisdictions. Using three cases of recent metropolitan-scale transit projects - Linea B, the Tren Suburbano, and Méxibus Linea 4 - as a lens, this thesis investigates how institutions and actors approach the jurisdictional and functional divides between the states, and how they have done so in the past. By examining the interactions of the various actors and institutions around the planning and implementation of each case, this thesis argues that the broadening of the transportation policy network reflects a more effective approach to metropolitan governance, auguring a future in which cooperation and competition in fact coexist at this scale not only within the realm of public transportation but also as part of overall urban dynamics.by Callida Cenizal.M.C.P

    No full text
This study presents a qualitative research on the changes in Filipino values across generations in the Philippines and an analysis of the Filipino expression, experience, and beliefs about the Filipino value hiya based on their personal and shared experiences. The study investigates the differences in the interpretation of the meaning and beliefs of the Filipino value hiya of individuals across three generations, namely, the baby boomers (1946-1965) aged 54-73, generation X (1966-1980) aged 39-53, and a combination of generation Y or millennial and Generation Z (1981-2010) aged 18-38. The study compares each generations’ interpretation of the Filipino value of hiya with regards to their workplace/school and social relationships (friendships, family, significant other/s). The study compares the difference in the participants’ beliefs, expressions, and experiences relating to the value of hiya as per their definition of the value per generation. The qualitative study includes 15 Filipinos with 5 individuals per age group/generation and utilizes semi-structured one-on-one interviews to procure information. The results of the study showed differences in the beliefs, expressions, and experiences of the Filipino value of hiya per generation

The Extent of technology readiness of accountancy students in De La Salle University and its relationship to academic performance

Technology Readiness Index (TRI) questionnaires were administered to 286 DLSU Accountancy students. Their overall TRI scores indicate that they have an average level of technology readiness. Hierarchical clustering and Multiple Discriminant Analysis were used to group respondents according to segments. The survey found that majority fall under the skeptic segment. There are no significant differences in terms of overall technology readiness scores across various demographic variables except for modules passed and year level. However, analysis of TRI components reveals statistically significant differences in the optimism dimension. Respondents in the higher rear level, with most modules passed and under double-degree programs hold a more positive view of technology than other segments. Finally, there is no significant correlation between technology readiness and academic performance
