    Making Voting Easier: Election Day Registration in New York

    As policymakers, election officials, and the public consider whether New York should change the way in which voters are allowed to register to participate in elections, and bring New York State election law into compliance with the Help America Vote Act, the following report provides an analysis of the potential impact of election day registration (EDR) in New York. EDR in New York has the potential to increase voter participation for New Yorkers by as much as: Over 12 percentage point increase in turnout by 18-to-25-year-olds. Nearly 10 percentage point increase in turnout by thosewith a grade school education or less.An 11 point increase in turnout by Latinos and nearly 9 percentage point increase in turnout by African Americans.Over 10 percentage point increase in turnout by those who have lived at their current address for less than six months.Over 12 percentage point increase in turnout by naturalized citizens

    For most Americans, voting requires two steps. First, an eligible citizen must register in some manner with an appropriate government agency. Second, once registered, the citizen can then cast a ballot on or before election day. The historical record provides examples of voter registration processes as early as 1801 in the state of Massachusetts, followed by Columbia, South Carolina in 1819, the state of Pennsylvania in 1836, and New York City in 1840. After the Civil War, voter registration systems proliferated throughout the nation, especially in large urban areas of the county.     Activation of K-RAS by co-mutation of codons 19 and 20 is transforming.

    The K-RAS oncogene is widely mutated in human cancers. Activating mutations in K-RAS give rise to constitutive signalling through the MAPK/ERK and PI3K/AKT pathways promoting increased cell division, reduced apoptosis and transformation. The majority of activating mutations in K-RAS are located in codons 12 and 13. In a human colorectal cancer we identified a novel K-RAS co-mutation that altered codons 19 and 20 resulting in transitions at both codons (L19F/T20A) in the same allele. Using focus forming transformation assays in vitro , we showed that co-mutation of L19F/T20A in K-RAS demonstrated intermediate transforming ability that was greater than that of individual L19F and T20A mutants, but less than that of G12D and G12V K-RAS mutants.     Differential Effects of Cyclosporin and Etanercept Treatment on Various Pathologic Parameters in a Murine Model of Irradiation-Induced Mucositis

    AbstractBackgroundRadiation therapy is the most prescribed treatment for many oncologic indications. One of its common side effects is mucositis with hallmark apoptosis in the intestinal crypt and diarrhea.ObjectiveWe investigated the potential beneficial effects of etanercept and cyclosporin treatment during radiation exposure. The effects of these drugs on intestinal apoptosis, long-term weight loss, diarrhea severity, and survival were examined.MethodsFor acute observation studies, animals pretreated with phosphate buffer saline (PBS) vehicle, either etanercept, or cyclosporin were challenged with either 1 Gy or 13 Gy irradiation and sacrificed 6 hours later. The animals' small intestines were then harvested for histologic analysis. For chronic survival studies, 14.5 Gy irradiation was applied. Etanercept or cyclosporin treatments were given 15 minutes before the irradiation, followed by daily administration.ResultsAt 6 hours postirradiation the maximum apoptotic index observed in the small intestine was ∼25% for both 1 Gy and 13 Gy irradiation. Etanercept and cyclosporin pretreatment had no effect on the irradiation-induced apoptosis. During chronic observation, the rate of weight loss was similar in all test groups. At 7 days postirradiation, the weight loss in phosphate buffered saline-treated control, etanercept, and cyclosporin groups reached a maximum at 19%, 24%, and 31.8%, respectively. The weight lost in the cyclosporin group was significantly higher than in the control group. Neither treatment reduced the severity of diarrhea, but cyclosporin increased the survival rate. Sixty percent of cyclosporin-treated animals survived compared with 27% in the PBS-treated control group and 47% in the etanercept-treated group. Serum tumor necrosis factor-α levels, a biomarker for both etanercept's mechanism of action and treatment efficacy, was inhibited by etanercept throughout the study, but cyclosporin only showed an inhibitory effect at 48 hours postirradiation.ConclusionsOur study demonstrates that cyclosporin increases the survival rate of irradiated animals without affecting parameters such as intestinal histology, weight loss, and diarrhea severity

    Validation of a Model for Prediction of Percent Intramuscular Fat on Live Feedlot Cattle

    A prediction model from a previous study was utilized to evaluate the degree of fit when this model is applied to an independent data set. The degree of fit was evaluated using means, regression analysis, correlation coefficient, distribution of residuals, and mean square error of prediction (MSEP). The model provided a reasonably accurate prediction of intramuscular fat with a mean bias of 0.13%. For 47.1% of the steers, percent intramuscular fat was predicted within ± 0.5%, and for 77.6% of the steers, prediction of percent intramuscular fat was made within ± 1%. Pearson product moment correlation between predicted and actual percent intramuscular fat was 0.74 (p \u3c .01), and the square root of MSEP indicated a prediction error of 0.9%

    Examining the impact of audience response systems on student performance in anatomy education: a randomized controlled trial

    Background and Aims: Electronic audience response systems (ARSs) offer the potential to enhance learning and improve performance. However, objective research investigating the use of ARSs in undergraduate education has so far produced mixed, inconclusive results. We investigated the impact of ARSs on short- and long-term test performance, as well as student perceptions of the educational experience, when integrated into undergraduate anatomy teaching. Methods and Results: A cohort of 70 undergraduate medical students were randomly allocated to one of two groups. Both groups received the same anatomy lecture, but one group experienced the addition of ARSs. Multiple-choice tests were conducted before, immediately after the lecture and again 10 weeks later. Self-perceived post-lecture subject knowledge, confidence and enjoyment ratings did not differ between groups. Test performance immediately following the lecture improved when compared against baseline and was modestly but significantly superior in the group taught with ARSs (mean test score of 17.3/20 versus 15.6/20 in the control group, p = 0.01). Tests conducted 10 weeks after the lecture showed no difference between groups (p = 0.61) although overall a small improvement from the baseline test was maintained (p = 0.02). Conclusions: Whilst ARSs offer opportunities to deliver novel education experiences to students, an initial superiority over standard methods does not necessarily translate into longer-term gains in student performance when employed in the context of anatomy education.     Evaluation of Ultrasound Measurement of Fat Thickness and Ribeye Area, II. Repeatability of Measurements.

    Data from two feeding trials were used to evaluate repeatability of ultrasound measurements of fat thickness and ribeye area. In each trial, steers were scanned three or four times by one technician. Two beef improvement federation (BIF)-certified technicians with different levels of experience interpreted images from the last scan. Each technician interpreted the image of an individual steer twice on two different days. Repeatability was evaluated as an intra-class correlation. Additional statistics used to evaluate repeatability were the slope and intercepts from a regression analysis, RMSE, and ESD. Ultrasound measurements of fat thickness and ribeye area were repeatable both within and across technicians. The only exception was the across-technician measurements of ribeye area, where an apparent difference in variances of measurements was observed

    Data from two feeding trials were used to estimate accuracy of ultrasound measurements of fat thickness and ribeye area. In each trial, steers were scanned three or four times by one technician. Two beef improvement federation (BIF)-certified technicians with different levels of experience interpreted images from the last scan taken just before slaughter. Each technician interpreted the image of an individual steer twice on two different days. Accuracy of interpretation was evaluated using simple statistical measures, including means, standard deviations, regression and correlation coefficients, RMSE, and ESD. The overall technician biases for ultrasound measurements of fat thickness and ribeye area were -0.17 cm and 0.63 cm2, respectively. Mean bias by technician indicated a similar direction and amount of bias (-0.14 vs -0.20 cm). However, bias in the measurement of ribeye area by the two technicians took an opposite direction ( -1.28 vs 2.54 cm2). In all cases, technician bias was within the acceptable range for BIF certification. Pearson product moment correlations between carcass and ultrasound measurements of fat thickness and ribeye area were 0.70 and 0.40, respectively. In general, fat thickness for 52% of the steers was measured within ±0.254 cm and for 85.2 % of the steers, fat thickness was measured within ±0.508 cm. For ribeye area, ±51.2 % and ±71.4 % of the steers had measurements within ±6.65 cm2 and ±12.99 cm2, respectively
