UTILIZAÇÃO DOS SERVIÇOS ODONTOLÓGICOS PELOS PACIENTES SOB RÁDIO E QUIMIOTERAPIA / USE OF DENTAL SERVICES BY PATIENTS UNDERGOING RADIO AND CHEMOTHERAPY

Introdução: A odontologia desempenha um papel importante nas diferentes fases terapêuticas contra o câncer. Antes, durante e após o tratamento por quimioterapia e radioterapia, o cirurgião-dentista pode atuar na prevenção das sequelas bucais associadas a essas terapias. Objetivo: Avaliar a utilização dos serviços odontológicos pelos pacientes em tratamento antineoplásico. Métodos: Estudo descritivo transversal, no qual foi utilizado como instrumento de coleta de dados um formulário com respostas fechadas, aplicado por meio de entrevista, conforme as diretrizes do Projeto SB2000, preconizado pelo Ministério da Saúde. A amostra foi composta por 631 pacientes que se encontravam em tratamento nos serviços de radioterapia e quimioterapia do Instituto Maranhense de Oncologia Aldenora Bello (IMOAB), São Luís (MA). Resultados: A última consulta odontológica da maioria dos pacientes ocorrera há 3 anos ou mais da coleta de dados. A dor foi o principal motivo para a procura de tratamento odontológico e mais da metade dos pacientes não receberam informações sobre prevenção de doenças bucais. Além disso, 71,6% dos participantes consideram que, atualmente, necessitam de tratamento odontológico. Conclusões: Para aumentar a taxa de uso de serviço odontológico durante o tratamento antineoplásico, é necessário facilitar o acesso ao serviço e melhorá-lo, além de disponibilizar conhecimentos aos pacientes acerca dos problemas bucais.Palavras-chave: Neoplasias. Before, during and after treatment by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the dental surgeon may act in preventing bucal sequel associated with these therapies. Objective: To evaluate the use of dental services by patients undergoing anticancer treatment. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study where a questionnaire with closed answers was used as an instrument for data collection, which we applied as an interview according to the guidelines of the Project SB2000 suggested by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. The sample consisted of 631 patients undergoing treatment in radiotherapy and chemotherapy services of the Aldenora Bello Institute of Oncology, São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. Results: The last dental visit of most patients occurred three or more years ago from the date of data collection. Pain was the main reason for seeking dental treatment and more than half of the patients did not receive information about prevention of oral diseases. Furthermore, 71.6% of participants claim that need dental treatment at the moment of interview. Conclusions: In order to increase the rate of dental service use during anticancer treatment, it is necessary to facilitate access to the service and improve it.
