An automated system for chromosome analysis. Volume 1: Goals, system design, and performance
The design, construction, and testing of a complete system to produce karyotypes and chromosome measurement data from human blood samples, and a basis for statistical analysis of quantitative chromosome measurement data is described. The prototype was assembled, tested, and evaluated on clinical material and thoroughly documented
An Automated System for Chromosome Analysis
The design, construction, and testing of a complete system to produce karyotypes and chromosome measurement data from human blood samples, and to provide a basis for statistical analysis of quantitative chromosome measurement data are described
Automated clinical system for chromosome analysis
An automatic chromosome analysis system is provided wherein a suitably prepared slide with chromosome spreads thereon is placed on the stage of an automated microscope. The automated microscope stage is computer operated to move the slide to enable detection of chromosome spreads on the slide. The X and Y location of each chromosome spread that is detected is stored. The computer measures the chromosomes in a spread, classifies them by group or by type and also prepares a digital karyotype image. The computer system can also prepare a patient report summarizing the result of the analysis and listing suspected abnormalities
Critical Approaches to Information Systems Planning: Refining the Research Agenda
This paper reappraises the managerialist model of organizations which underpins most current approaches to IS planning. There is much criticism of the managerialist model as a flawed approach because it assumes that organizations are unitary entities which act rationally in the pursuit of system goals. This model ignores the different interests among individuals and groups in an organization and the significance of conflict and power in shaping organizational practices. Because IS planning constitutes a major site of organizational activity, it is important that research in this area theorizes organizations in an inclusive and informed way. Insights from Critical Social Theory can help analysts of the IS planning process understand the dynamics of that process more fully. It provides a framework for an improved research agenda to gain this understanding
Use of extended and prepared reference objects in experimental Fourier transform X-ray holography
The use of one or more gold nanoballs as reference objects for Fourier
Transform holography (FTH) is analysed using experimental soft X-ray
diffraction from objects consisting of separated clusters of these balls. The
holograms are deconvoluted against ball reference objects to invert to images,
in combination with a Wiener filter to control noise. A resolution of ~30nm,
smaller than one ball, is obtained even if a large cluster of balls is used as
the reference, giving the best resolution yet obtained by X-ray FTH. Methods of
dealing with missing data due to a beamstop are discussed. Practical prepared
objects which satisfy the FTH condition are suggested, and methods of forming
them described.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letter
Halothane hepatitis with renal failure treated with hemodialysis and exchange transfusion
A 38-year-old white female, hepatitis B antigen negative, developed fluminating hepatic failure associated with oliguria and severe azotemia after two halothane anesthesia and without exposure to other hepatotoxic drugs or blood transfusions. She was treated with multiple hemodialysis and exchange blood transfusion. The combined treatment corrected the uremic abnormalities and improved her level of consciousness. The liver and kidney function gradually improved, and she made a complete recovery, the first recorded with hepatic and renal failure under these post-anesthetic conditions. Further evaluation of this combined treatment used for this patient is warranted. © 1974 The Japan Surgical Society
Formation of Silicate Grains in Circumstellar Environments: Experiment, Theory and Observations
Amongst chemical reactions (1) in the molecular universe (2), condensation reaction is probably the most poorly understood. The condensation of a solid from its components in the gas phase occurs in many parts of our galaxy such as stellar mass outflows, the terrestrial region of protoplanetary disks and in primordial solar nebula (3). But how does the transition occur from molecules to intermediate clusters to macroscopic grains? The major focus of the present work is the identification of chemical condensation reaction pathways that lead to the formation of stoichiometry, composition and crystallinity of cosmic silicates from vapor phase species
