Comparing the short-term memory binding test and RAVLT as predictors of hippocampal atrophy

BACKGROUND: The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) assesses the long-term verbal episodic memory, while the short-term memory binding (STMB) tests assess conjunctive memory binding. In the STMB, participants should remember the integration of shapes (or objects) and colors, forming a unique representation in memory. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the STMB and the RAVLT as predictors of hippocampal atrophy. METHODS: All participants underwent neuropsychological assessment and MRI data were collected. Participants were 17 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 12 patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). All participants performed the RAVLT test and two different paradigms of the STMB test: change detection and free recall. In the change detection task, patients need to recognize if there was a difference in shapes and colors (unbound) or shape-color integrations (bound) between two consecutive screens. In the free recall task, patients were asked to recall aloud objects and colors individually (unbound condition) or object-color integrations (bound condition) that they had just seen in a screen. The groups were compared using ANCOVA analyses, and regression analyses were used to evaluate which cognitive paradigm better predicted the hippocampal atrophy. RESULTS: 10 patients showed no hippocampal atrophy (all were MCI patients) and 19 had atrophy (7 MCI and 12 AD). The group with atrophy was older and showed worse performance in the cognitive tasks. The regression model using the atrophy (positive or negative) as the dependent variable, and the STMB tasks, RAVLT delayed score, age and education as the predictors, indicated that only the STMB change detection bound task was retained in the model (R = 0.517, R2 = 0.268, p = 0.004), explaining 26,8% of the variance. Present findings suggest that the change detection STMB task may be a better marker of neurodegeneration than the other tests

Structural aspects, thermal behavior, and stability of a self-assembled supramolecular polymer derived from flunixin-meglumine supramolecular adducts

Flunixin-meglumine, a potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and a cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor for Veterinary use, is a hydrogen-bonded supramolecular adduct. Two monotropically related crystalline modifications (Forms I and II) were observed for a flunixin-meglumine sample. During the melt of form I, flunixin-meglumine adducts self-assembled by hydrogen bonds involving the hydroxyl groups from meglumine, resulting in an amorphous rigid glassy supramolecular polymer, which showed a high molecular weight around 290 +/- 88 MDa and a glass transition around 49.5 degrees C. Both the adduct and the resulting supramolecular polymer were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and weight-average molecular weight determination by light scattering. The chemical stability and morphological changes of the depolymerization process were also investigated for the supramolecular polymer, by DSC and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Kinetic parameters for thermal decomposition of supramolecular polymers derived from diclofenac-meglumine supramolecular adducts

Meglumine is an aminocarbohydrate able to form supramolecular adducts with organic acids. The recognition is based on hydrogen bonds and the structures resulting from the complexation have high solubility in water. This property has been exploited by the pharmaceutical industry in the improvement of existing drugs, and the successful example of this approach involves the poorly soluble non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Investigation of the thermal behavior of adduct obtained from meglumine and the NSAID diclofenac revealed that a polymer-like material is formed from the self-assembly of diclofenac-meglumine adducts in the melt. This polymer showed a high molecular weight around 2.0×105kDa. The kinetic parameters for the thermal decomposition step of the polymer were determined by the Capela-Ribeiro non-linear isoconversional method. From data for the TG curves in nitrogen atmosphere and heating rates of 5, 10, 15 and 20°Cmin-1, the Eα and Bα terms could be determined, and consequently the pre-exponential factor, Aα, as well as the kinetic model, g(α). © 2012 Elsevier B.V

Kinetic parameters for thermal decomposition of supramolecular polymers derived from flunixin-meglumine adducts

Meglumine, (2R,3R,4R,5S)-6-methylaminohexane-1,2,3,4,5-pentol, is a carbohydrate derived from sorbitol in which the hydroxyl group in position one is replaced by a methylamine group. It forms binary adducts with substances having carboxyl groups, which have in common the presence of hydrogen bonding as the main force in the stabilization of these species. During melting, adducts of meglumine with flunixin (2-[[2-methyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]amino]pyridine-3-carboxylic acid) polymerize or self-assemble in amorphous supramolecular structures with molecular weights around 2.0 x 10(5) kDa. DSC curves, in a first heating, show isomorphic transitions where the last one at 137 A degrees C for the flunixin-meglumine adduct originated the supramolecular amorphous polymers with glass transition around 49.5 A degrees C. The kinetic parameters for the thermal decomposition step of the polymers were determined by the Capela-Ribeiro non-linear isoconversional method. From data for the TG curves in nitrogen atmosphere and heating rates of 5, 10, 15, and 20 A degrees C min(-1), the E (alpha) and B (alpha) terms could be determined and, consequently, the pre-exponential factor, A(alpha), as well as the kinetic model, g(alpha)

The genus Zygothrica Wiedemann 1830 (Diptera, Drosophilidae) in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil: distribution and ecological notes

The present paper brings together survey data from nine collection sites in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. Samples were obtained during about four years in forested, coastal and urban areas. Flies were attracted by fermented banana baits and captured in traps. Among the species of the genus Zygothrica Wiedemann 1830 collected, Zygothrica apopoeyi Burla 1956, Z. bilineata (Williston 1896), Z. dispar (Wiedemann 1830), Z./ lanceolata Burla 1956, Z. nigropleura Grimaldi 1987, and Z. poeyi (Sturtevant 1921) were recorded for the first time in Santa Catarina state and, except for Z. bilineata, also in southern Brazil. Apart from these species, we also collected Zygothrica hypandriata Burla 1956, Z. orbitalis (Sturtevant 1916) (as Z. parilis), Z. prodispar Duda 1925 and Z. vittimaculosa Burla 1956. Except for Z. bilineata and Z. hypandriata, these are the new southernmost records for the geographical distribution of these species. All the collected species were represented by few individuals, probably as a consequence of the collection method, and most of them was captured in winters and springs. Five species were restricted to the more preserved studied site, and most individuals were collected in forest sites. Nevertheless, four species were also captured in urban or xeric environments, indicating a higher tolerance and a wider ecological versatility in this genus as compared to what was previously thought, at least for some species
