Italy 1942: Visions of the Future Dwelling

This paper wishes to examine why and how of what was termed in 1942 'uno strano momento d'ozio' ('an odd period of idleness') became for an elite of Italian architects, who grew up under the banner of modernism, a fertile condition to reassess the future dwelling as the new ideal for all human beings. One year earlier Alberto Lattuada, architect, photographer, and renowned film director captured that suspended atmosphere in his L'occhio quadrato, 26 black and white pictures of strong realism. The call for reviewing 'la casa e l'ideale' ('the home: an ideal vision') launched by Domus in August 1942, offered these architects the model ground to express their dreams and hopes. Domus program eventually allowed them to free the creation of a kind of 'esperanto' that helped to transfer the iconic rationalism in the cultivated modern vernacular of postwar reconstruction. It was all but an escape from reality; rather it showed how these architects used that call for adjusting their know-how to the elaboration of some radical, alternative design inventions, that displayed a rich repertoire of materials and technologies, a visionary high-tech avant la lettre. The year 1942 may well serve as synecdoche of the period between autharchy and post-WWII reconstruction. The comparison between Domus and the special issue of Edilizia Moderna, April-December 1942, entitled 'Costruzioni del Tempo di Guerra' ("Building during War Time") exemplifies the ambiguities that the profession was confronting. Here the agony of the regime is in the background, while the buildings show how technical skill may be turned into dull functionality. I'm planning as well to read this condition looking backward to a series of booklets, issued by the Ministry of War in 1938, to instruct architects and planners, among others, on how to build in order to prevent damages caused by air attacks. War also meant imprisonment. Ludovico Quaroni, one of the key figures of twentieth-century Italian architecture and a protagonist of postwar reconstruction remained in a camp in India for about five years. His carnets of sketches contained a plenitude of drawings for the ideal home next to vivid images of village dwellings and domestic vernacular. Would the Indian trope become a source of his village like the Tiburtino neighborhood of early '50s? It is worth exploring further this more distant resonance. No doubt that the pendulum between desire of the new and nostalgia justified the permanence of the contradictions this paper aims to illustrate. By the end, Fascism caused death, fear, emigration...as well as being pivotal in forcing architects to envision the 'rinascita'.Conference co-organized by the Institute of Fine Arts; Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal; and Princeton University's School of Architecture

    Introduction

The objective of the session is to introduce the methodological approach that should frame the exchange between history and heritage. The session focuses on two notions, architectural history and heritage, both exposed to the challenge of a new interpretive perspective, that of the evolution of time and of its current acceleration. References to this interpretation are included in the work of French historian François Hartog, whose investigation into the development of what he defines as historia magistra, helps reach a common ground for a dialogue that acknowledges a pluralism of well-rooted regimes of historicity. Related to this notion is the concept of authenticity that is identified as one of the dimensions of heritage. My aim is to assess if writing on the history of architecture has truly identified other procedures and methods regarding the question of temporality and the related empowerment of heritage. One major concern is to clarify the role of the historians, who founded the legitimacy of the modern movement and subsequently challenged its legacy. Another focus is on the historiographic aspects of the creation of the concept of modernity and on how it was narrated

Jean-Louis Cohen © Gitty Darugar, 2009, d.r.

    Get PDF
Software systems are typically divided into modules. All relevant data of a module are documented in its module documentation. Among other things, these data include the test information of the module. The module documentation itself is part of the overall software architecture documentation. Software architectures are usually documented with word processors or wikis. However, both kinds of those tools are not fully sufficient for this task. Therefore, this diploma thesis develops a tool, which is specialized for documenting software architectures and modules. The tool provides functionality to create documents and their parts based on templates. This thesis provides a special template for those parts of the document, which concern the test of modules. The template contains sections for all relevant test information. The test information may be named directly or may be reffered to. Furthermore, the thesis provides a concept to explicitly define and visualize the relations, which exist in the software architecture documentation. An example for such relations are those between the test information which were reffered to, e.g., test protocol P protocols a test run of test case C. The concept is realized within the tool. Finally, the tool is evaluated

Jean-Louis Cohen © Gitty Darugar, 2009, d.r.

B-Type Peptides to Predict Post-Liver Transplant Mortality: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Get PDF
Background & Aims: Cirrhotic patients undergoing liver transplantation are at high risk of death from cardiac complications. Brain Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) and Amino Terminal Brain Natriuretic Peptide (NT-BNP) are commonly utilized in cardiac risk stratification. Their significance in predicting mortality risk in cirrhotic patients during or after liver transplantation is unknown. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to answer this question. Methods: An electronic search of EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (2005 to Sept 2016), Google scholar and study bibliographies was conducted. Study quality was determined, and demographic and outcome data were gathered. Random-effects meta-analyses of mortality based BNP/NT-BNP level or presence of post-transplant heart failure were conducted. Results: Seven studies comprising 2010 patients were identified. Demographics were similar between patients with high or low BNP or NT-BNP levels. Hepatitis C was the most prevalent etiology of cirrhosis (38%). Meta-analysis revealed a pooled relative risk of 3.1 (95% CI 1.9 ? 5.0) for post-transplant mortality based on elevated BNP or NT-BNP level. Meta-analysis also revealed a pooled relative risk of 1.6 (95% CI 1.3 ? 2.1) for post-transplant mortality if patients had demonstrated post-transplant heart failure. Conclusion: Our analysis suggests that early BNP or NT-BNP measurement may help in risk stratification and provides data on post-operative mortality in cirrhotic patients undergoing liver transplantation. Discriminatory thresholds appear to be higher in cirrhotic patients relative to prior studies in non-cirrhotics. However, the number of analyzed studies is limited and our findings should be validated further through larger, prospective studies.Fil: Chahal, Daljeet.
