    Physical parameters in the hot spots and jets of Compact Symmetric Objects

    We present a model to determine the physical parameters of jets and hot spots of a sample of CSOs under very basic assumptions like synchrotron emission and minimum energy conditions. Based on this model we propose a simple evolutionary scenario for these sources assuming that they evolve in ram pressure equilibrium with the external medium and constant jet power. The parameters of our model are constrained from fits of observational data (radio luminosity, hot spot radius and hot spot advance speed) versus projected linear size. From these plots we conclude that CSOs evolve self-similarly and that their radio luminosity increases with linear size along the first kiloparsec. Assuming that the jets feeding CSOs are relativistic from both kinematical and thermodynamical points of view, we use the values of the pressure and particle number density within the hot spots to estimate the fluxes of momentum (thrust), energy, and particles of these relativistic jets. The mean jet power obtained in this way is within an order of magnitude that inferred for FRII sources, which is consistent with CSOs being the possible precursors of large doubles. The inferred flux of particles corresponds to, for a barionic jet, about a 10% of the mass accreted by a black hole of 108M10^8 {\rm M_{\odot}} at the Eddington limit, pointing towards a very efficient conversion of accretion flow into ejection, or to a leptonic composition of jets.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures.     SPIDER X - Environmental effects in central and satellite early-type galaxies through the stellar fossil record

    A detailed analysis of how environment affects the star formation history of early-type galaxies (ETGs) is undertaken via high signal to noise ratio stacked spectra obtained from a sample of 20,977 ETGs (morphologically selected) from the SDSS-based SPIDER survey. Two major parameters are considered for the study: the central velocity dispersion (sigma), which relates to local drivers of star formation, and the mass of the host halo, which relates to environment-related effects. In addition, we separate the sample between centrals (the most massive galaxy in a halo) and satellites. We derive trends of age, metallicity, and [alpha/Fe] enhancement, with sigma. We confirm that the major driver of stellar population properties in ETGs is velocity dispersion, with a second-order effect associated to the central/satellite nature of the galaxy. No environmental dependence is detected for satellite ETGs, except at low sigma - where satellites in groups or in the outskirts of clusters tend to be younger than those in the central regions of clusters. In contrast, the trends for centrals show a significant dependence on halo mass. Central ETGs in groups (i.e. with a halo mass >10^12.5 M_Sun) have younger ages, lower [alpha/Fe], and higher internal reddening, than "isolated" systems (i.e. centrals residing in low-mass, <10^12.5 M_Sun, halos). Our findings imply that central ETGs in groups formed their stellar component over longer time scales than "isolated" centrals, mainly because of gas-rich interactions with their companion galaxies.Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    A Tolman Surface Brightness Test for Universal Expansion, and the Evolution of Elliptical Galaxies in Distant Clusters

    We use the intercept of the elliptical galaxy radius--surface brightness (SB) relation at a fixed metric radius as the standard condition for the Tolman SB test of the universal expansion. We use surface photometry in the optical and near-IR of elliptical galaxies in Abell~2390 (z=0.23z=0.23) and Abell~851 (z=0.41z=0.41), and compare them to the Coma cluster at z0z\approx 0. The photometric data for each cluster are well-described by the Kormendy relation reΣeAr_e \propto \Sigma_e^{A}, where A=0.9A=-0.9 in the optical and A=1.0A=-1.0 in the near-IR. The scatter about this near-IR relation is only 0.0760.076 in logre\log r_e at the highest redshift, which is much smaller than at low redshifts, suggesting a remarkable homogeneity of the cluster elliptical population at z=0.41z=0.41. We use the intercept of these fixed-slope correlations at Re=1R_e = 1~kpc (assuming H0=75H_0=75~km~s1^{-1}~Mpc1^{-1}, Ω0=0.2\Omega_0=0.2, and Λ0=0\Lambda_0=0, where the results are only weakly dependent on the cosmology) to construct the Tolman SB test for these three clusters. The data are fully consistent with universal expansion if we assume simple models of passive evolution for elliptical galaxies, but are inconsistent with a non-expanding geometry (the tired light cosmology) at the 5σ5 \, \sigma confidence level at z=0.41z=0.41. These results suggest luminosity evolution in the restframe KK-band of 0.36±0.140.36 \pm 0.14~mag from z=0.41z = 0.41 to the present, and are consistent with the ellipticals having formed at high redshift.     Self-organized patterns of coexistence out of a predator-prey cellular automaton

    We present a stochastic approach to modeling the dynamics of coexistence of prey and predator populations. It is assumed that the space of coexistence is explicitly subdivided in a grid of cells. Each cell can be occupied by only one individual of each species or can be empty. The system evolves in time according to a probabilistic cellular automaton composed by a set of local rules which describe interactions between species individuals and mimic the process of birth, death and predation. By performing computational simulations, we found that, depending on the values of the parameters of the model, the following states can be reached: a prey absorbing state and active states of two types. In one of them both species coexist in a stationary regime with population densities constant in time. The other kind of active state is characterized by local coupled time oscillations of prey and predator populations. We focus on the self-organized structures arising from spatio-temporal dynamics of the coexistence. We identify distinct spatial patterns of prey and predators and verify that they are intimally connected to the time coexistence behavior of the species. The occurrence of a prey percolating cluster on the spatial patterns of the active states is also examined.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figure

    Dating COINS: Kinematic Ages for Compact Symmetric Objects

    We present multi-epoch VLBA observations of Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) from the COINS sample (CSOs Observed In the Northern Sky). These observations allow us to make estimates of, or place limits on, the kinematic ages for those sources with well-identified hot spots. This study significantly increases the number of CSOs with well-determined ages or limits. The age distribution is found to be sharply peaked under 500 years, suggesting that many CSOs die young, or are episodic in nature, and very few survive to evolve into FR II sources like Cygnus A. Jet components are found to have higher velocities than hot spots which is consistent with their movement down cleared channels. We also report on the first detections of significant polarization in two CSOs, J0000+4054 (2.1%) and J1826+1831 (8.8%).     Polarimetry of Compact Symmetric Objects

    We present multi-frequency VLBA observations of two polarized Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs), J0000+4054 and J1826+1831, and a polarized CSO candidate, J1915+6548. Using the wavelength-squared dependence of Faraday rotation, we obtained rotation measures (RMs) of -180 \pm 10 rad m^-2 and 1540 \pm 7 rad m^-2 for the latter two sources. These are lower than what is expected of CSOs (several 1000 rad m^-2) and, depending on the path length of the Faraday screens, require magnetic fields from 0.03 to 6 \mu G. These CSOs may be more heavily affected by Doppler boosting than their unpolarized counterparts, suggesting that a jet-axis orientation more inclined towards the line of sight is necessary to detect any polarization. This allows for low RMs if the polarized components are oriented away from the depolarizing circumnuclear torus. These observations also add a fourth epoch to the proper motion studies of J0000+4054 and J1826+1831, constraining their kinematic age estimates to >610 yrs and 2600 \pm 490 yrs, respectively. The morphology, spectrum, and component motions of J1915+6548 are discussed in light of its new classification as a CSO candidate, and its angle to the line of sight (~50\deg) is determined from relativistic beaming arguments.Comment: 29 pages, including 9 figures; Accepted by Astrophysical Journal, 16 Feb 0

    Minimilho, também conhecido como "baby corn", é o nome dado à espiga jovem, em desenvolvimento, não fertilizada de uma planta de milho. Com o advento da indústria de conservas, o minimilho passou a ser consumido também na forma de conservas. Assim, houve um crescimento na área cultivada com milho para consumo nessa forma, à semelhança do acontecido com o milho verde. Diferentes tipos de cultivares de milho, como doce, pipoca e mesmo milho normal têm sido utilizados para a produção do minimilho. O cultivo desse tipo de milho é pouco expressivo no Brasil, sendo a produção e o processamento agroindustrial pouco tecnificados, se comparados com outros países, além de existir uma escassez de informações em relação ao manejo da cultura, bem como sobre o desempenho dos cultivares. Avaliou-se o desempenho de cultivares de milho em diferentes épocas de semeadura, associado ao efeito do despendoamento das plantas na produção de minimilho. Os experimentos foram instalados em área experimental da Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, em Sete Lagoas, MG, sendo um experimento no ano de 1999 (semeadura em 23/12), dois no ano de 2000 (semeaduras em 20/01 e 12/10) e um em 2001 (semeadura em 02/02). Para cada experimento, o delineamento experimental empregado foi em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 8 (cultivares) x 2 (com e sem despendoamento), com três repetições. Realizaram-se três colheitas, em intervalos de três dias, sendo a primeira três dias após a emissão dos estilos-estigmas. Foram avaliados o peso de espigas empalhadas, o peso de espigas comerciais e o rendimento de espigas comerciais. Entre as cultivares avaliadas, a DKB 929 se destaca, apresentando o melhor desempenho para peso de espigas empalhadas e peso de espigas comerciais, independente da época de semeadura. O despendoamento proporciona aumento na produtividade de espigas comerciais, independente da época de semeadura. Há necessidade de avaliação das cultivares em diferentes épocas, antes da sua recomendação para a produção de minimilho. Para a produção de espigas empalhadas, o aumento na produção devido ao despendoamento depende da época de semeadura
