This article describes the development and initial score validation of the Mentoring Needs in Counselor Education Scale (MNCES), designed to evaluate the mentoring needs of counselor education students and pre-tenured faculty. Exploratory factor analysis (n = 278) yielded a 32-item, five-component solution with strong score reliability as indicated by Cronbach’s alpha values above .70: Career and Professional Development (.82), Research and Scholarship (.86), Growth and Support (.83), Multicultural and Environmental Issues (.84), and Practitioner Role (72). The MNCES provides a tool for facilitating conversations regarding mentorship expectations between mentees and mentors in the field of counseling

Multi-Tiered Intensive Supervision: A Culturally-Informed Method of Clinical Supervision

In this exploratory phenomenological study, the authors researched the experiences of doctoral level supervisors (N=5) who piloted a new supervision approach, Multi-Tiered Intensive Supervision (MTIS). MTIS is a 13-week supervision intervention that involves hierarchical supervisory experiences which includes clinical supervision with three different professionals. This approach applies an anti-racist framework and merges the components of traditional supervision models which allows concepts such as knowledge development of multicultural counseling theory, conceptualization of the intersectionality of cultural identities and enhanced personal self-awareness across each layer of supervision. Five themes were identified: (a) recognition of power, privilege, and oppression; (b) personal impact; (c) deficits in current supervision training and models; (d) supervisory skill development; and (e) impact of MTIS. Implications and recommendations for supervisors, counselor education programs, and researchers are provided

This guide presents foundational issues counselor educators and supervisors may consider when developing an addictions course inclusive of BPAs. It also highlights components of a sample syllabus for a BPA course, including student learning outcomes (SLOs), course topics, materials, and activities/assignments. Developing curricula inclusive of BPAs is a way for counselor educators to begin to advocate for comprehensive addictions curricula within existing counselor education programs, in order to improve the competency of the counselors they train

Article describes how the perceptions of personal and professional identity development from four Black women counselor educators were examined through a collaborative autoethnography methodology. Themes identified include (a) intentionality of code-switching, (b) inextricable identities, (c) fight for and with authenticity, and (d) mutual development of personal and professional identities

Host candidate gene polymorphisms and clearance of drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum parasites

Resistance to anti-malarial drugs is a widespread problem for control programmes for this devastating disease. Molecular tests are available for many anti-malarial drugs and are useful tools for the surveillance of drug resistance. However, the correlation of treatment outcome and molecular tests with particular parasite markers is not perfect, due in part to individuals who are able to clear genotypically drug-resistant parasites. This study aimed to identify molecular markers in the human genome that correlate with the clearance of malaria parasites after drug treatment, despite the drug resistance profile of the protozoan as predicted by molecular approaches

Motives and comprehension in a public goods game with induced emotions

This study analyses the sensitivity of public goods contributions through the lens of psychological motives. We report the results of a public goods experiment in which subjects were induced with the motives of care and anger through autobiographical recall. Subjects' preferences, beliefs, and perceptions under each motive are compared with those of subjects experiencing a neutral autobiographical recall control condition. We find, but only for those subjects with the highest comprehension of the game, that care elicits significantly higher contributions than anger, with the control treatment in between. This positive influence of the care motive on unconditional giving is accounted for partly by preferences for giving and partly by the beliefs concerning greater contributions by others. Anger also affects attention to own and other's payoffs (using mouse tracking) and perceptions of the game's incentive structure (cooperative or competitive)

Transgender Research in Counseling Journals: A Content Analysis from 2007 to 2020

This article contains the findings of a content analysis on transgender-related scholarship in four counseling and counseling psychology journals from 2007 to 2020. A total of 94 publications were coded for analysis, and results from this analysis indicate an increase in the literature pertaining to transgender people and issues, though limitations still exist. Trends in the research are discussed, as well as gaps in the understanding of transgender communities in the counseling literature
