    The Effect of Negative-Energy Shells on the Schwarzschild Black Hole

    We construct Penrose diagrams for Schwarzschild spacetimes joined by massless shells of matter, in the process correcting minor flaws in the similar diagrams drawn by Dray and 't Hooft, and confirming their result that such shells generate a horizon shift. We then consider shells with negative energy density, showing that the horizon shift in this case allows for travel between the heretofore causally separated exterior regions of the Schwarzschild geometry. These drawing techniques are then used to investigate the properties of successive shells, joining multiple Schwarzschild regions. Again, the presence of negative-energy shells leads to a causal connection between the exterior regions, even in (some) cases with two successive shells of equal but opposite total energy.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    Gait Recognition: Databases, Representations, and Applications

    There has been considerable progress in automatic recognition of people by the way they walk since its inception almost 20 years ago: there is now a plethora of technique and data which continue to show that a person’s walking is indeed unique. Gait recognition is a behavioural biometric which is available even at a distance from a camera when other biometrics may be occluded, obscured or suffering from insufficient image resolution (e.g. a blurred face image or a face image occluded by mask). Since gait recognition does not require subject cooperation due to its non-invasive capturing process, it is expected to be applied for criminal investigation from CCTV footages in public and private spaces. This article introduces current progress, a research background, and basic approaches for gait recognition in the first three sections, and two important aspects of gait recognition, the gait databases and gait feature representations are described in the following sections.Publicly available gait databases are essential for benchmarking individual approaches, and such databases should contain a sufficient number of subjects as well as covariate factors to realize statistically reliable performance evaluation and also robust gait recognition. Gait recognition researchers have therefore built such useful gait databases which incorporate subject diversities and/or rich covariate factors.Gait feature representation is also an important aspect for effective and efficient gait recognition. We describe the two main approaches to representation: model-free (appearance-based) approaches and model-based approaches. In particular, silhouette-based model-free approaches predominate in recent studies and many have been proposed and are described in detail.Performance evaluation results of such recent gait feature representations on two of the publicly available gait databases are reported: USF Human ID with rich covariate factors such as views, surface, bag, shoes, time elapse; and OU-ISIR LP with more than 4,000 subjects. Since gait recognition is suitable for criminal investigation applications of the gait recognition to forensics are addressed with real criminal cases in the application section. Finally, several open problems of the gait recognition are discussed to show future research avenues of the gait recognition

    Enhanced Learnability of Flight Techniques Through the Introduction of Targeted Observation Flights with Ab-Initio through Advanced Flight Training Candidates

    Flight training paradigms exist to provide a framework for instructors to relay both technical and applied knowledge to students in the most efficient way possible. Traditional methods imply the use of pre/post flight briefings coincident with flight in either an actual or simulated environments. The demonstration of maneuvers may be accomplished by the instructor followed by the student or solely by the student. In this phase, aeronautical knowledge, procedural knowledge, and performance metrics are usually assessed. With regard to enhanced learnability, the study of effectiveness becomes critical to the application of new methods that could significantly lower the amount of flight time required to meet objectives or performance criteria for a given lesson. As industry continues to evolve with the use of automation, efficient pathways from initial to advanced flight training must be assessed in order to ensure students are receiving the most out of each activity. The direct observation of flights as an in-flight observer may improve performance and enhance the learnability of certain aspects of flight training, therefore reducing the number of flight hours necessary to achieve flight training landmarks. An experiential assessment of this technique will provide insight into the use of observation flights and how they may be correlated to improvement in student retention and performance

    BioConcens: Biomass and bioenergy production agriculture – consequences for soil fertility, environment, spread of animal parasites and socio-economy

    The research programme called “international research cooperation and organic integrity” was commenced for a period 2006-2010. It is coordinated by DARCOF (The Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming). The whole programme, with acronym DARCOF III, consists of 15 projects (http://www.darcof.dk/research/darcofiii/index.html). One of them is BIOCONCENS - Biomass and bioenergy production in organic farming – consequences for soil fertility, environment, spread of animal parasites and socio-economy (http://www.bioconcens.elr.dk/uk/). The production of bioenergy in organic agriculture (OA) can reduce its dependency of fossil fuels and decrease green house gasses emission; consequently it will increase sustainability of organic farms. Biorefinery concept based on co-production of biogas, bioethanol and protein fodder in organic farming will be developed within the BIOCONCENS project and the background for the project and the different work packages will be presented in this paper

    Explaining and inducing savant skills: privileged access to lower level, less-processed information

    I argue that savant skills are latent in us all. My hypothesis is that savants have privileged access to lower level, less-processed information, before it is packaged into holistic concepts and meaningful labels. Owing to a failure in top-down inhibition, they can tap into information that exists in all of our brains, but is normally beyond conscious awareness. This suggests why savant skills might arise spontaneously in otherwise normal people, and why such skills might be artificially induced by low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. It also suggests why autistic savants are atypically literal with a tendency to concentrate more on the parts than on the whole and why this offers advantages for particular classes of problem solving, such as those that necessitate breaking cognitive mindsets. A strategy of building from the parts to the whole could form the basis for the so-called autistic genius. Unlike the healthy mind, which has inbuilt expectations of the world (internal order), the autistic mind must simplify the world by adopting strict routines (external order)

    Abelian Higgs Hair for Electrically Charged Dilaton Black Holes

    It is argued that an electronically charged dilaton black hole can support a long range field of a Nielsen-Olesen string. Combining both numerical and perturbative techniques we examine the properties of an Abelian-Higgs vortex in the presence of the black hole under consideration. Allowing the black hole to approach extremality we found that all fields of the vortex are expelled from the extreme black hole. In the thin string limit we obtained the metric of a conical electrically charged dilaton black hole. The effect of the vortex can be measured from infinity justifying its characterization as black hole hair.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, Revtex, to appear in Phys.Rev.D1
