Biologic effects of oil fly ash.

    Get PDF
Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated increased human morbidity and mortality with elevations in the concentration of ambient air particulate matter (PM). Fugitive fly ash from the combustion of oil and residual fuel oil significantly contributes to the ambient air particle burden. Residual oil fly ash (ROFA) is remarkable in the capacity to provoke injury in experimental systems. The unique composition of this emission source particle makes it particularly useful as a surrogate for ambient air PM in studies of biologic effects testing the hypothesis that metals mediate the biologic effects of air pollution particles. A majority of the in vitro and animal model investigations support the postulate that transition metals present in ROFA (especially vanadium) participate in Fenton-like chemical reactions to produce reactive oxygen species. This is associated with tyrosine phosphorylation, nuclear factor kappa B and other transcription factor activation, induction of inflammatory mediator expression, and inflammatory lung injury. It is also evident that vanadium accounts for a significant portion of the biologic activity of ROFA. The extrapolation of this body of investigation on ROFA to the field of ambient air PM is difficult, as particles in numerous environments have such small amounts of vanadium

Remarkable Lives :Robert Lawrence in conversation with Jerome Carson

    Get PDF
The purpose of the paper is to provide a profile of Robert Lawrence. Robert provides a short background to his life and is then interviewed by Jerome. Robert talks about the slow onset of his condition, his hospital admission and subsequent long journey of recovery. Case studies are of course only one person’s story. The world of someone experiencing psychosis is so different that we can only really understand it fully through the accounts of sufferers like Robert. Robert makes a number of points about how services could be improved, such as through quicker and better treatment and a commitment to promote positive mental health. Robert talks about “benefits you can live off.” He notes that some governments have not fully appreciated the reality of mental suffering and its effects on trying to live a “normal” life. Robert’s story has seen him embark on a long journey. He has now managed to study for a qualification which will hopefully bring him employment as a counsellor

What is the function of theoretical theatre ideas, given the content presented in Modern Theatre?

ABSTRACT In this work, I will look at the implications and history of theatre theory, then lay the ground work for what works will be used in this examination. Then, I look at the definition of form and content in theatrical terms and introduce the issue of this work, what is the function of Theoretical Theatre ideas, given the content presented in modern theatre? Then, I will talk about the work of Aristotle, giving brief biographical information and some of his theory on creating theatrical work, citing his work known as The Poetics. I will then look at the implications of this work on the modern play structures created based off of his ideals. After Aristotle, I will look ahead to Emile Zola, and discuss his work on the ideal genre of naturalism. After giving a full description of naturalism in his mind and biographical information, I will use Woyzeck by George Büchner as an exemplar to better explain what naturalism is, in practice. Then, I will look at the implications of naturalism on modern realism, which is what is normally used in the modern theatre. Next, I will look to the work of Bertolt Brecht, first giving a biographical outline, then quickly going into his theory. I will use his play Mother Courage and Her Children to outline how his theory would look in practice. Lastly for him, I will look at the implications of his work on how we modernly conceptualize theatre in terms of form and content. Lastly, I will look at the work of Antonin Artaud, with a biographical exploration, then an exploration into his theoretical work The Theatre and Its Double. After this, as there isn’t a good exemplar of his work that is well-known, I will dive into the impact of his work on modern theatre directly. I will then conclude the essay with a refined glance at the work of each theorist and how each has shaped the modern theatre

Climatic Variation and Age Ratios in Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goats in the Greater Yellowstone Area

Using management data regularly collected by state and federal agencies, we indexed recruitment rates of bighorn sheep and mountain goats in the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA) by calculating young : adult ratios. Annual and long term regional climatic conditions were indexed using data from Natural Resource Conservation Service Snotel sensors across the GYA. Linear regression models were used to assess hypotheses that recruitment rates in bighorn sheep and mountain goats in the GYA were associated with annual and regional variation in climatic conditions. The initial dataset consisted of 685 bighorn sheep lamb : ewe ratios from 21 herds since 1960 and 184 mountain goat kid : adult ratios from 18 herds since 1966. After censoring data, 369 bighorn sheep records remained, which were split into three seasonal subsets, and 123 mountain goat records remained in a single dataset. Findings suggest that recruitment rates in bighorn sheep and mountain goats were associated with annual variation in both pre-birth and post-birth climatic conditions, interacting with long term regional climate conditions. Additionally, strong interactions were found between precipitation during the birthing season and winter severity. Collectively, these findings suggest that recruitment in bighorn sheep and mountain goat populations in the GYA may be sensitive to changes in future climate conditions and that the response may vary regionally across the GYA
