Mathematical Models of Tumors and Their Remote Metastases

    Get PDF
Clinical observations and indications in the literature have led us to investigate several models of tumors. For example, it has been shown that a tumor has the ability to send out anti-growth factors, or inhibitors, to keep its remote metastases from growing. Thus, we model the depleting effect of such a growth inhibitor after the removal of the primary tumor (thus removing the source) as a function of time t and distance from the original tumor r. It has also been shown clinically that oxygen and glucose are nutrients critical to the survival and growth of tumors. Thus, we model the effects of immersing a tumor into a nutrient bath. Similarly, this model could represent the addition of nutrient to the tissue surrounding a spherical tumor. In this paper, we model several problems associated with the clinical observations noted above, and draw conclusions based on the obtained results

Some comparisons against a reference sardine harvest control rule for OMP-18

    Get PDF
As part of the development of OMP-18, a full set of performance statistics are given for a ‘reference’ Harvest Control Rule for sardine, together with some comparisons between key performance statistics for some changes to the Harvest Control Rule constraint parameters. Results are tested under a variety of potential baseline Operating Models

Using Student-Centered Projects To Teach Mathematics Content Standards

    Get PDF
Teaching and learning standards across the country are becoming more content driven, especially in mathematics.  As such, it is essential to develop substantive college level math courses for pre-service and in-service teachers.  These courses should deliver mathematical content in a relevant way.  Teachers must not only be proficient in their subject, but also recognize how to apply content meaningfully to student’s lives.  As part of a grant funded through the Department of Education in coordination with the Clark County School District, I have designed two college level courses that will deliver mathematical content standards to middle school teachers.  These courses will help prepare teachers at the middle school level by focusing on mathematical content, making connections within the curriculum, using technology, and enhancing the role of mathematics in everyday life and problem solving. The primary purpose of this paper is to share with the academic community the projects used to develop content understanding in mathematics topics such as:  mathematical notation, proportion, computation, estimation, linear regression, reflections, translations, finding relationships, and analyzing data.  This paper will present these projects, and tie them to mathematics standards outlined in the Clark County School District (and Nevada State) Standards

Recommending yoga for health: A survey of perceptions among healthcare practitioners in the UK.

Yoga has the potential to support patients across various health conditions. It is slowly being integrated into healthcare worldwide. While healthcare practitioners (HCPs) are critical to integration, there are currently no studies investigating their perceptions of yoga for health, their openness to recommending yoga to patients, and barriers to doing so. This novel UK study aims to address this. An online survey was conducted among practising UK HCPs. Recruitment was through multi-modal convenience sampling. The COM-B model was used as a framework. Regression analysis examined predictors of HCPs' likelihood to recommend yoga. Open-end responses were analysed through thematic analysis. 198 HCPs were included in the analysis, including general practitioners (GPs, 18.8%), psychologists (18.3%), and nurses/health visitors (14.7%). A high proportion (68.8%) practised yoga at least monthly. The likelihood of recommending yoga to patients was high (M = 4.03, SD = 0.94; 5-point scale). Older age, not being a GP, and greater capability and motivation significantly predicted a greater likelihood of recommending yoga, explaining 41.4% of the variance (p < 0.001). Barriers to recommending yoga were mostly related to the lack of opportunity. HCPs in this study had high levels of personal engagement with yoga and were open to recommending yoga to patients, but still faced several barriers. Workplace support, particularly for GPs, and information about how patients can access appropriate and affordable yoga instruction would facilitate referral. Further research with a representative sample is warranted to understand perceptions of HCPs less engaged with yoga. [Abstract copyright: Copyright © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.. A description of Interim OMP-18 for the management of the South African sardine and anchovy fishery

Revision to the Initial Assessment of the South African sardine resource using data from 1984-2018.

This document presents a revision to the two mixing component assessment of South African sardine by de Moor (2019). This assessment remains an “initial assessment” with results expected to be sufficiently accurate such that they can reliably form the basis of simple constant catch projections for short-term management decisions. This is not the planned comprehensive assessment as detailed in the future work section of de Moor (2019)

Short‐term projections of the South African anchovy resource using constant catch scenarios

    Get PDF
This document considers the short‐ and medium‐term impact of a range of future constant catch scenarios on the anchovy resource to assist the SWG‐PEL in making a scientifically justified initial anchovy TAC recommendation. Projections are considered under three alternative models and a range of future recruitment scenarios or ‘regimes’. Results have been provided for both the ‘impact’ of the catch scenarios on the resource (by comparing catch to no catch projections) and the depletion of the resource (by comparing catch to Dynamic B0 projections)
