Model for a Universe described by a non-minimally coupled scalar field and interacting dark matter
In this work it is investigated the evolution of a Universe where a scalar
field, non-minimally coupled to space-time curvature, plays the role of
quintessence and drives the Universe to a present accelerated expansion. A
non-relativistic dark matter constituent that interacts directly with dark
energy is also considered, where the dark matter particle mass is assumed to be
proportional to the value of the scalar field. Two models for dark matter
pressure are considered: the usual one, pressureless, and another that comes
from a thermodynamic theory and relates the pressure with the coupling between
the scalar field and the curvature scalar. Although the model has a strong
dependence on the initial conditions, it is shown that the mixture consisted of
dark components plus baryonic matter and radiation can reproduce the expected
red-shift behavior of the deceleration parameter, density parameters and
luminosity distance.Comment: 11 pages and 6 figures. To appear in GR
Friedmann-like equations for High Energy Area of Universe
In this paper, evolution of the high energy area of universe, through the
scenario of 5 dimensional (5D) universe, has been studied. For this purpose, we
solve Einstein equations for 5D metric and 5D perfect fuid to derive
Friedmann-like equations. Then we obtain the evolution of scale factor and
energy density with respect to both space-like and time-like extra dimensions.
We obtain the novel equations for the space-like extra dimension and show that
the matter with zero pressure cannot exist in the bulk. Also, for dark energy
fuid and vacuum fluid, we have both accelerated expansion and contraction in
the bulk.Comment: 9 pages, Accepted to publication in IJTP 26 June 2012. arXiv admin

Spintessence: a possible candidate as a driver of the late time cosmic acceleration
In this paper, it is shown completely analytically that a spintessence model
can very well serve the purpose of providing an early deceleration and the
present day acceleration.Comment: 5 pages, no figure. Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and

Supernovae as a probe of particle physics and cosmology
It has very recently been demonstrated by Csaki, Kaloper and Terning (CKT)
that the faintness of supernovae at high redshift can be accommodated by mixing
of a light axion with the photon in the presence of an intergalactic magnetic
field, as opposed to the usual explanation of an accelerating universe by a
dark energy component. In this paper we analyze further aspects of the CKT
mechanism and its generalizations. The CKT mechanism also passes various
cosmological constraints from the fluctuations of the CMB and the formation of
structure at large scales, without requiring an accelerating phase in the
expansion of the Universe. We investigate the statistical significance of
current supernova data for pinning down the different components of the
cosmological energy-momentum tensor and for probing physics beyond the standard
models.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX, 4 figures; v2: typos corrected, minor changes,

Narrowband UVB phototherapy for clinically isolated syndrome: A trial to deliver the benefits of Vitamin D and other UVB-Induced molecules
Low vitamin D and insufficient sun exposure are additive independent risk factors for the development of multiple sclerosis (MS). The usual measure of vitamin D status, serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D], is also a marker of recent exposure to the UVB rays of sunshine. The main evidence for a protective effect for MS development of higher 25(OH)D comes from observational studies, but this study design cannot separate out whether 25(OH)D is acting as a marker of vitamin D status, sun exposure, or both. In light of a lack of definitive outcomes in MS patients after trials of vitamin D supplementation and the ability of narrowband UVB to induce vitamin D, as well as other immune-regulatory molecules in skin, the Phototherapy for Clinically Isolated Syndrome (PhoCIS) trial was established to investigate the benefits of narrowband UVB, in addition to supplemented vitamin D, on MS development in individuals with Clinically Isolated Syndrome. We propose that the PhoCIS trial provides a fresh approach to re-defining the reported associations of 25(OH)D levels with MS development and progression
Cosmological model with interactions in the dark sector
A cosmological model is proposed for the current Universe consisted of
non-interacting baryonic matter and interacting dark components. The dark
energy and dark matter are coupled through their effective barotropic indexes,
which are considered as functions of the ratio between their energy densities.
It is investigated two cases where the ratio is asymptotically stable and their
parameters are adjusted by considering best fits to Hubble function data. It is
shown that the deceleration parameter, the densities parameters, and the
luminosity distance have the correct behavior which is expected for a viable
present scenario of the Universe.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
Relating the Cosmological Constant and Supersymmetry Breaking in Warped Compactifications of IIB String Theory
It has been suggested that the observed value of the cosmological constant is
related to the supersymmetry breaking scale M_{susy} through the formula Lambda
\sim M_p^4 (M_{susy}/M_p)^8. We point out that a similar relation naturally
arises in the codimension two solutions of warped space-time varying
compactifications of string theory in which non-isotropic stringy moduli induce
a small but positive cosmological constant.Comment: 7 pages, LaTeX, references added and minor changes made, (v3) map

Scalar-Tensor Gravity and Quintessence
Scalar fields with inverse power-law effective potentials may provide a
negative pressure component to the energy density of the universe today, as
required by cosmological observations. In order to be cosmologically relevant
today, the scalar field should have a mass
, thus potentially inducing sizable
violations of the equivalence principle and space-time variations of the
coupling constants. Scalar-tensor theories of gravity provide a framework for
accommodating phenomenologically acceptable ultra-light scalar fields. We
discuss non-minimally coupled scalar-tensor theories in which the scalar-matter
coupling is a dynamical quantity. Two attractor mechanisms are operative at the
same time: one towards the tracker solution, which accounts for the accelerated
expansion of the Universe, and one towards general relativity, which makes the
ultra-light scalar field phenomenologically safe today. As in usual
tracker-field models, the late-time behavior is largely independent on the
initial conditions. Strong distortions in the cosmic microwave background
anisotropy spectra as well as in the matter power spectrum are expected.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
BPS Domain Wall Junctions in Infinitely Large Extra Dimensions
We consider models of scalar fields coupled to gravity which are
higher-dimensional generalizations of four dimensional supergravity. We use
these models to describe domain wall junctions in an anti-de Sitter background.
We derive Bogomolnyi equations for the scalar fields from which the walls are
constructed and for the metric. From these equations a BPS-like formula for the
junction energy can be derived. We demonstrate that such junctions localize
gravity in the presence of more than one uncompactified extra dimension.Comment: 17 pages, uses RevTeX, new references adde
A quantum mechanical relation connecting time, temperature, and cosmological constant of the universe: Gamow's relation revisited as a special case
Considering our expanding universe as made up of gravitationally interacting
particles which describe particles of luminous matter and dark matter and dark
energy which is described by a repulsive harmonic potential among the points in
the flat 3-space, we derive a quantum mechanical relation connecting,
temperature of the cosmic microwave background radiation, age, and cosmological
constant of the universe. When the cosmological constant is zero, we get back
the Gamow's relation with a much better coefficient. Otherwise, our theory
predicts a value of the cosmological constant
when the present values of cosmic microwave background temperature of 2.728 K
and age of the universe 14 billion years are taken as input.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, Study of the Universe from a condensed matter
